I'm wondering what the generally agreed upon dB level is for the music track itself in a music video export. I've seen other reports of the -6 to -12dBs range and that is what I have done before. On our first mix, I had the music track set to around -6 to -8 dBs and that seemed to sound alright. There are also short non-music sequences with location sound at the beginning and end that are mixed to normal standards so the music track at -8dB properly stands out (and provides an intentionally abrupt, but not too jarring volume change). 

 

The mastered music track from the artist comes in right at 0/-1dBs and he seems adamant about keeping it that way so as to "not affect the sound of the master". But that just doesn't seem right to me. We did a test export with the music track at 0dBs and as you would expect, we noticed distortion in some speakers during playback. So I'm just curious what other professionals have worked with before. The artist is not being super difficult about it, just really precious about the sound of his track so I'm trying to reassure and find a middle ground. Especially since I don't personally have much experience on the actual music side of mixing. Thanks!

-3dB below zero is the golden rule that is taught in school. But more minus is the taste thing!

For example, in the case of natural recordings (records in the field) I leave a lot more minus so that it does not sound unnatural. Everyone must appreciate it with their own ears.

What is a 'music video export'?
A deliverable for broadcast has to meet specs, nowadays most of the time conform the R128 measurement method.

-1 to 0 is old fashioned 'mix for CD' level, and is never ever used elsewhere.
The "not affect the sound of the master" has nothing to do with a volume adjustment for the output file, as that only affects volume, and that can be simply counteracted by turning up the knob on the amp / tv set.


I'm amazed such a question comes up on a forum like this.

The 'standard' loudness for music streaming these days  is -14 LUFS (integrated). LU is not to be confused with dB (peak or RMS. There are many LU meter plug-ins available, free and otherwise. Most DAWs, NLEs and audio editing software have an LU meter option as well. Sound Forge Pro has a 'statistics' tool that is significantly faster than a real-time integrated measurement, for instance if you have a one hour show, the tool will render the pertinent data in about 10 sec (which also can be printed or saved as a text file).  You can also check a file for streaming compliance here. (Edit, just looked at your PDF, and sorry, playing back the entire shebang for measurements is nonsense.
Work like you always did, chances are you are not far off. Then do a mixdown (you need to do so anyways) and analyze that.
Mixdown and analyzing with a proper tool will be way faster than RT.
My loudnesschange will give you a detailed report what parts to work on, but most of the time you will be fine with just a small overall volume change.)

I have no clue what I'm looking at.
But, a positive dB value can only be a True Peak, as (afaik) 0 dB is the max value a sample can hold.
A TP of 27,8 is created by a Gotham Thunderbird.

 

Can you share the files?

My gutfeeling tells me that this will be close to impossible to mix to a broadcast standard, the songs will be to 'peaky' to make any volume. (Let a VU meter come up.)
The noise of wind in leaves will be concidered either silence (no part of the measurment) or way too low to get to the desired level.
A doc explaining the content, or in European commercials, flag intentionally low level as True

I think the same that in case like nature it must be set by ear, but of course, make sure that the level does not go beyond zero (-0,3 dB). Or better 3dB + 0,3 dB = 3,3 dB

The -14 is VERY loud, thus it needs tons of compression / limiting to get up to specs.
Now, If i measure with the Dutch Long Form specs, I get way different values, your file would be up to specs with a very tiny dip at 1:51 and an overall volume change:
(The ambient is quite loud.)

Thank you for the analysis! But you would not compress the voice of nature, which I think is wrong. Of course we tend the subject, but this is an interesting topic.

On the background there is a seaside! That is why it comes "The ambient is quite loud". Nor did I elliminate the wind blowing into microphones, because it does not interfere so much, and it would again be wrong in my opinion.  This is, of course, a taste thing.

Yeah, If I had to submit this for broadcast, I would only target the TP's, as they can get quite horrible in some pipelines (digital clicks), and normalize to be some -2dB.
(Normal old fashioned normalize, NOT r128, as that would make it absurd loud in comparinson to other content.)
Or, take a 'normal' show, make that up to specs (about, just for hearing reference) and level the birds to match that. It will be way too low, but 'good' in my book.

 

 

Btw, I found iZotope RX 11 Advanced Audio in the metadata, did you already process this in 'any' way?

I’ve removed the parts that weren’t directly relevant to this topic.
In my own workflow, I tend to follow my instincts — and that’s the same approach I’d recommend to anyone working with this kind of material.
That said, I’ve kept the first file, which includes my recording of birdsong.
Since the original question was specifically about “Mixing level for music track in a music video”, I believe this thread has provided some valuable insights worth reflecting on.
I’m especially grateful for the discussion about the R128 measurement method — I’ve come away with a clearer and more informed understanding of it.
