D Clay Audio Posted August 8, 2025 Report Posted August 8, 2025 Hey everyone, I just purchased a secondhand pair of DPA lav mics. Apparently the seller purchased them from an estate sale, and didn’t have a way to test them. They were advertised by the seller as being brand new or very lightly used DPA 4060’s. The price was good so I decided to take a risk. Now that I have received them, I can see that the label which would identify the model has been removed on both of the mic cables. This is slightly suspicious to me, since the 4060s sell for more than the 4061s. With that said, is there any other way for me to physically identify which of these mic models these lavs are? Because if they are 4061s, I would likely return them, as they are too noisy for most of my applications (I’ve tried them before). I currently don’t have a way to test the mics myself, since they have Lemo connectors and all of my wireless packs use TA5 Lectro connections. Quote
Derek H Posted August 9, 2025 Report Posted August 9, 2025 Not sure really. Maybe ask DPA? Might be a way to determine from resistance measurements on the pins or something. The serial numbers are also gone? I would probably just re-terminate them to TA5F and then it should be obvious once you’re listening on a familiar setup. If it turns out they’re 61s and you don’t want them you shouldn’t have trouble selling them to Lectro users here or elsewhere. Quote
r.paterson Posted August 9, 2025 Report Posted August 9, 2025 4061 have a red band with s/n.. If not core versions.. Core 4061 have a blue band with s/n or at least they did.. 4060 with be at least 10db hotter than a 4061as well, if you already had a 4061 to compare.. Quote

Axel Mishael Posted August 10, 2025 Report Posted August 10, 2025 With the -9 dbs of gain difference (being the 4061 the attenuated) and also, the 4060 is more bassy on its sound. Axel. Quote
The Immoral Mr Teas Posted August 10, 2025 Report Posted August 10, 2025 Well, if there's nobody in the Nashville area able to try the mics out for you with the relevant Lemo inputs or adapters (3-pin? 4-pin? 6-pin?) you might have to rent some unit for a day to listen to them. I don't see what's suspicious about removing serial numbers from expensive brand new or very lightly used equipment. Or not having any way to use or test such equipment and selling it on at a knock down price. Estate sale, hatchback or lorry? Perhaps they still have the serial numbers they removed (for aesthetic reasons, or just for the fun of not being able to tell which mic they were employing on a session)? Sorry for not being of actual help, but removing one's own serial numbers would be a first for me and I'm sceptical it has yet happened. Jez Quote
D Clay Audio Posted August 11, 2025 Author Report Posted August 11, 2025 I’m going to take the mics by Trew Audio to have them tested. If all is well, I’ll have them re-terminated and keep them. If they are not what I’m expecting, or wanting, I’ll return them to the seller. Worst case scenario I just resell them myself and break even. Quote
D Clay Audio Posted August 20, 2025 Author Report Posted August 20, 2025 Figured I’d provide an update — Compared the mics to 4061’s and 4060’s at Trew Audio. looks like they are definitely 4060’s (huge relief). getting them re-terminated and all is well Quote
