aginzo Posted August 31, 2025 Report Posted August 31, 2025 I have a never-used 75-foot boom duplex cable that I am curious as to whether anyone here has ever repurposed one of these successfully? I really don't want to throw this thing away, but as it stands, I really don't have a use for it. I don't think anyone is looking to buy one of these since we're all wireless. Quote
The Documentary Sound Guy Posted August 31, 2025 Report Posted August 31, 2025 What's on the ends? XLR5? I use them for stereo runs. I have enough for my own use, but it's not out of the question that someone else would want them for the same use I have. Also, what's on the inside? Is it just starquad that happens to be wired for two channels (not ideal, but that doesn't stop some manufacturers (cough) Remote Audio (/cough) from selling "stereo" cables made that way). Quote
aginzo Posted September 1, 2025 Author Report Posted September 1, 2025 There is a box on one end which has the headphone input 1/4" and an XLR female to plug your boom pole with an XLR, and the other end that goes to the mixer is a 1/4 inch male to connect to the headphone output, as well as a mic XLR input. The Documentary Sound Guy Posted September 1, 2025 Report Posted September 1, 2025 Hirose 10-pin! (?) I wonder how it's wired? I have a camera return cable that uses that connector. Also, what is the cable stock? It looks like a thick Canare? Can you give me the model number (written on the jacket)? In terms of what can you do with it? I would use it for parts ... the 4-conductor cable is potentially useful (and expensive to buy new), and the hirose connector is still used on Sound Devices (Scorpio, 6-series), so you might find a taker who would be interested in re-terminating as a stereo output cable. Finding that person would be difficult but those are the uses I see. Your photo doesn't show the splice between the single cable and the dual breakout. I don't suppose there's another Hirose 10-pin on that end too? Quote
aginzo Posted September 1, 2025 Author Report Posted September 1, 2025 "I don't suppose there's another Hirose 10-pin on that end too?" Nope. Just two cables that were jacketed together. The box side has a screw collar so they can separate, I guess if you wanted to. I'll try to take some photos. The office is a mess as I am trying to rearrange stuff. Quote
The Documentary Sound Guy Posted September 1, 2025 Report Posted September 1, 2025 Nah, don't bother for my sake. You text answers my question. Quote

Well, I may simply give others a more visual as of what I have. I mean I may not do anything to it. I just really wanted some ideas and to see if anyone did something to a duplex they own. For now, I think I am just going to bring it with me to jobs down the road. I know for one gig I do periodically, I'm going to break it out as a hardwired comm for the director. We've had some issues in this one particular location near water where I get dropouts from my Zax ERXs. I've worked on a solution that I believe will solve it, but I'd like to have this one so the director can have a hardline form my recorder. Quote

In my experience, ERXs are problematic in most locations ... though I've heard RF Amps make them somewhat usable. URXs are much better (and, by coincidence, I happen to be selling some). Quote

I do have an RF amp. It helps. It's more than just when we shoot these spots, which are out by a lake, and as you know, water absorbs high-frequency radio waves. 5 hours ago, The Documentary Sound Guy said: Just one? I don't have as much of a problem in interiors with ERXs Quote
