Hi All,

I was wondering if anyone had any experience of the benefits of holding dual citizenship as a freelancer?

I hold both UK and EU citizenship, and am wondering if this would enable me to more easily get international work across Europe as it doesn't require me to have a visa to work in the EU.

Thanks,

Douglas

Welcome to JWS Douglas.

Sure, it was good for me for a couple or so decades - up until 2018 or whenever I trained and worked in Paris and worked on location and in studios all over Europe. I travelled to Warsaw to do post-production on a film the week it joined the EU. I'd say it started going tits up (for most of us) from about 2014, not the actual 2016 vote or our actual final 'leave' a couple of years later as a great deal of UK-EU co-production was at first uncertain then collapsed.

I'd give my UK citizenship for my EU back, but nobody's offering! But the simple answer is - yes, it is a hundred times easier for you to take work but more importantly also far far easier for a European production to offer work. You'll still have to seek out and go after the productions but be sure to make it very very clear to productions or whomever that you hold that (now-so-precious) EU citizenship.

Best of luck, Jez

you can do some online jobs, citizenship doesn't really matter in this case. Dual citizenship really does open a lot of doors, especially for travel and work. It’s one of those things people don’t appreciate until they actually need it. I was reading some aol reviews the other day and someone compared juggling two citizenships to juggling old and new email accounts — a funny but weirdly accurate analogy. Definitely a worthwhile topic to explore.
