  • no-nonsense recorder. No eye candy, just functionality.
  • Record unlimited tracks, with a mixdown, in 24 or 32 bits. (Well, the software is unlimited, no clue when hardware becomes the limiting factor...)
  • Record to multiple locations
  • Playback with all tracks under the faders again
  • Customisable pre-record duration
  • Pan / mute / solo / phase reverse (I added the last one cause it's just 'chan = chan * -1', as proof of concept that a M/S setup is easy...)
  • Looooong faders (if you have a wide screen...)
  • Buffer in case of slow / disappearing drives. (Files that are ripped during record are totally usable without any help!)
  • Add metadata, even while recording
  • Changing metadata, on 'any' BWF file, with an embedded backup in the file.
  • Mute / solo for monitoring (that will NOT end up in the files / hop / direct out)
  • Slate button to insert separate mic in Mix Left (does anyone still use that?)
  • Lock function so no unwanted changes are made.
  • TC in- and output, even with modern HFR framerates (up to 999 fps)
  • up to 3 different devices for IO connection (I can imagine you don't want your expensive HQ card sacrifice channels for dirty slate talk / TC, a 5 buck USB thingy will be good enough for rock 'n roll.)

ToDo:
- make a second page for the faders where they act as gain, that will also end up in the ISO recording.
- add password / secret keycombo for lock function

- whatever you like to see

Known issues
- dust in the panpots, it might crackle on turning. (no issues when in a fixed position)

Nice.  Mac only? Linux??

But how will we know it’s any good without a snazzy name? “Bouke’s Bit-Bucket” has a ring to it ; )

 looks great!

 Good luck

I'm liking it.  Side note: Does anyone know of a bus powered USB interface that has 8 line level inputs?  I'd love to use my PSC Solice Mini with something like this but I find that most interfaces need AC power or use some weird voltage of DC.

I haven't owned one in a while, but I think the Zoom F8 used to act as a bus-powered interface?  Do your research first because I'm operating from memory, but look into it.

yeah, but it's not gonna happen. 'BBB' is the name of a political party over here, waaay to much at the right side of the spectrum for my taste..
But, keep 'm coming!

eah....system reqs?  (Esp. how old an OS can I use?).

No clue, but I expect / guestimate that the last 15 years are supported at least. I hope to present a test / toy version tomorrow. (It works already, but I'm ironing out some strange issues with saving preferences when the devices have been changed on a new launch. And that will happen a lot...)

Price is unsure, but certainly cheaper than a PSC Solice Mini!

I snagged one second hand for $500 USD!  Sounds great, just need to find a bus powered or 9-18v, 8-10 channel USB interface so I can just plug it into a Macbook and call it.

Yeah that would be a bummer.  I'm contemplating something like the Arturia X8 In to a bus powered ADAT interface such as the MCHStreamer Box.  The X8 has a locking DC jack that is 15v which should theoretically play nice with most 14.4v lithium systems.

Looks great @Bouke, bravo.
Could it support recording different formats simultaneously? A bit niche perhaps but sometimes nice to be able to do a .wav and .mp3 at the same time.

Problem with bus power is noise/ground loop induced through USB connection, can be a real pain to troubleshoot. Would absolutely recommend a dedicated PSU.

Can’t the mixpre 10 act as an interface?

If it acts as a normal sound interface, yes it should. But it may be that it only outputs a mix instead of all iso's. You have to test yourself. (Thats nothing more than connecting it, running my work and try 🙂

Yes, but not at this time. And I want to have a stable version that meets the basics before I add more functionality. (I've been back to basics a couple of times already...)

Meanwhile I've got a toy version, mac only at the moment, drop me a line if you want it.

From the mixpre 10 manual:

12-in, 4-out USB audio interface streams to your computer via USB-C at bit depths up to 32-bit float

So I mean, yeah. On the other hand, then you already have a pretty full featured recorder on hand.

Sidenote:

pretty much no longer in the business, full time radio mixer/teacher these days, but these new softwares coming out are looking pretty sweet. Great options for the people :)

Yes, it can. Even the relatively inexpensive Portacapture X8 handles it quite well. Via USB-C and Asio driver.

I appreciate feedback / suggestions / feature requests.

Also, if anyone has a suggestion for a decent simple audio interface, I need a new one 🙂

Wow, even works on my ye olden "trash can" Mac Pro that is stuck on Monterey.  Seems like you have a nice program brewing here!  Is your goal to be able to "mix in the box" in addition to recording ISO's?  That's one feature I don't see programs like Wildtrax having (or at least yet).  There is something to be said if all audio could go into an interface, and then once there, be mixed with a control surface to create a "mix" in the box in addition to recording the ISO's.  Having one of those new $500 Macbook's and a little portable bus powered interface + control surface would be quite the setup.

How many channels are you looking for in an interface?

I've been using my Audient Evo4 for a few years now.  It's a simple 2x2 bus powered one although they do have a 4x4 and an 8 channel (non bus powered) model as well.  Plug and play and has worked with Mac OS / Windows / Linux no problem.

Yes of course, it does that already, did you not try? Did you even switch to the 'operate' page?
You end up with a MixL and MixR on top of all Iso's (that are unaffected at the moment, I could build in a gain for that.)

The Monitor output has the mix only, but the Monitor output differs from Left / Right that it honours Solo and Mute.

It supports THREE interfaces at the moment := )
TC and Slate could be different devices.
For output, TC, monitor and Hop can be three different devices also.
(At the cost of a bit of latency on sound. TC is predicted / can be made in advance, so that should not be an issue in latency.)

It now has mouse faders ...
I can of course add hardware MIDI faders, but that means 'work'...
I take it this is a bit of a backup / panic product, as you probably want to bill for you expensive black box recorder. So no idea how much it will be used in real life.

Oh, there is a manual, look at it.
And, I've found some turkey's of course, the link is updated, you might want to re-download. (Some stuff with playback not showing the proper channel names.)

The MOTU Traveler used to have the ability to be powered with 12v DC, so, good for cart. But firewire... 400. I am still using one for its ADAT in/out ability and 8 line outputs for my O1V96i 😆 for mobile studio music recording.

It seems like their latest model with that ability is the UltraLite-MK5:

https://motu.com/en-us/products/gen5/ultralite-mk5/

It is 15v DC input and it does not have the reliable XLR4 pin DC input like the Traveler.

Control surface support added.
But, I have a few questions about that. (So i've not yet compiled a newer version.)

Both MIDI and OSC seem to have only 127 steps of fader precision. For the full length of the fader that is app. 1 dB per step. That is not much precision, since ya all seem to be on the faders with silk gloves.
What I could do is 'stretch' the 127 steps in a range, so you get something like 'From -12 to +12', so you have 5 times more precision. (Assuming the default gain is set to be 'about' right.)
This means (if it's not clear already), fader on your control surface all the way down will be -12 in my mixer, all the way up would be +12. (Or any range of values as you would like it. My faders go from -700 to +400 (arbitrary choice).)
Would that be an idea?

(Same goes for pan, that runs in just 10 steps for fully left to fully right, but I take it it's 'set and forget', most of the time either left, center or right.)

Next, what with Mute and Solo? Is there a standard way they operate? In Reaper it seems no problem to Solo several channels that are muted at the same time. That makes no sense to me...
What I did is having Solo to auto mute all other channels, while 'mute' auto un-solos that channel. I can keep it that way, but then the control surface might not play nice. (bi-directional is not yet supported, and I'm getting hungry on a saturday night.)

Last but not least, nice to see this site continues living. Thanks all that made that possible!

My Travelers (3) held up really well, but my experience with later MOTU gear was that it was not as reliable or as versatile.  We finally gave up on it for live recording.

This one does not work on M1 Max, Mac Os Sequoia. Looks like it's Intel binary, any chance for Apple Silicon version?

That's strange, it definitely should run just fine. What happens? (Be more specific than you might think is necessarily.)

Could it be you only tried the internal mic instead of an external audio device?
The way it is now it expects at least 2 input channels, and your machine might have just one.
I see if I can fix that. (It's a bit of a mess, as some macs say that the input is stereo while in fact it's mono...)

What you can do is option click the app, choose 'show package contents' (an app is actually a folder), dive into the folder structure, there find MacOS -> BWFrecorder.

Drop that on a terminal window and press enter. That 'should' give some meaningfull info. Mail me that and I'll have a look.

It does not start when double clicked normally. When i check info, i see it is a Intel Binary. Opening package contents and running MacOS/Bwfrecorder works, it starts. But does not want to start normally. Do you have a universal binary build? The one that is both for Intel and Apple Silicon cpu's?
