Reliable USB audio interface under $500US?

My Focusrite Scarlett Gen 1 is getting flaky. It's (directly) connected to my Mac Studio (and previously to a MacBook Pro). I mainly use it to drive NFMs. Sometimes to record scratch VO and hobby music. Since it's on a Mac, it doesn't/shouldn't need drivers (and hasn't so far...for like a decade or something). Tried a few things to get it stable, but willing to consider that it's time....

 

So what's a good, reliable USB audio interface that you like? Again, main task is to drive one set of monitors. Would be cool if I could switch between two sets, but that's not really necessary. I have a few other needs, but really: reliability is key. And I'd rather not spend RME-like money (~$1000 US)/

 

So what do you personally use and recommend?

In the 'my new recorder' thread someone advised me an Audient thingy.

That's more than you need, but I wanted to toy with a couple of more inputs from a single device. (And perhaps you want to have a backup device?)
I can't comment on the sound quality of AD, but monitor out seems decent enough. Build quality is 'good enough'.
The EVO 4 is 114 euro. That's disposable in my book. I've seen people spent more on a few cables alone 🙂

Get a used RME babyface. Small, good headphone amp, plug and play, usb powered. I have it on a MacBook Pro, you can install the additional totalMix and so on. RME has great Support for dated products, too. I have the older Babyface without "FS", still a great buy. 

 

Tried Focusrite Scarlett and Clarett, Audient, too.

Apogee Duet. Retails for $700, but could maybe find a used one.
Or if you have been happy with the Scarlett, maybe get the current version…?

If you can get the original RME BF Pro for your budget, I would encourage that. 

 

Rock steady performance with the added benefit of RME's TotalMix and DigiCheck apps for incredible routing and metering. Works well with iOS as a remote interface or used as a controller for your Mac/PC.

 

Bonus: I get 2.2 ms round trip latency on my M1Mac running at 96Khz 32 smpls.

 

My son is running a SSL 2+ Mkii on PC and it has been trouble free for him.

I would look for a used high quality interface, i prefer apogee quartet or duet, others rme. My quartet works since 10 years flawless.

Used around 300€ in Europe.

Rme should be in the same ballpark.

A buddy of mine used one with his phone and schoeps mk41Vs to record a concert this weekend.  He says it measures well, but the routing can be a bit challenging initially.

What i/o? 2?  4?  more?  I have a pair of lowly Tascam 16x08s that have worked flawlessly at home and abroad for years.  Not the highest-fi things, extremely simple, has an internal mixer that works just ok w/o any real features, but way cheap and 16 in x 8 out (with 8 ok-grade mic pres+8 more line only ins) in 1 RU.

Motu M2 and M4 offer some of the best value for money I think.

Honnestly. I used  for years , as a simple, out-of-the-studio-ready-to-go solution  a Roland Octacapture 8I/8O and it's as stable as a RME. The pres are torally honorable.
