I have a film project coming up in which software to separate dialogue and effects and break down a mixed soundtrack into individual stems might be useful.

Have any of you folks done something similar, especially with the 2 pieces of software mentioned?

Suggestions to use Cedar would not, I believe, be germane to this project.

TIA,

Ableton Live 12 Suite has an audio separator feature that easily separates into four individual tracks / stems: Vocal, Bass, Drum, and Other. NB! This feature is only available in the more expensive Suite version! And it works well!

I use Steinberg's SpectraLayers Pro which can isolate components/stems, I have not used it extensively on non-music projects but it works great. I think the demo version is fully functional and can be used as a DAW plug-in or stand alone.
FWIW, Sony Creative Software was the original publisher of SLP but the developer is still the same person.
iZotope's RX Advanced is another option but it's expensive

I use both iZotope RX and Ableton Live 12 Suite. Both do a great job, but for this specific task Ableton works slightly better. Of course, it all depends on your needs! For example, RX is much better for Music Rebalance — if you need to adjust the level of the vocal (or bass, drums, or melodic instruments), I don’t know any tool that does it better.
