What do you mean by travel for work? From your home? To a different State? To a different country? Forgive me, I don't get what you're asking. Personally I like time or time and a half for airport days, as I'd rather be recording than standing in a big room for hours then explaining gear then needing to fly, find the gear again, find the hotel, check the gear and find that not only you've missed the chance to eat but you can't even get a nightcap anywhere. BTW, I only ever got half-day for this crap. But I miss it.

It's what you'd think: hard on relationships (especially if the sig. other is not a crew etc person themselves), very hard on 2nd businesses (rentals, investments etc), hardest of all re: kids who don't really understand why you aren't around much, even when they get a bit older (and not at all when they are little).  As with touring or any other travelling gig it works best for those with fewest commitments, since the work has a way of destroying those kinds of commitments.  Some people make it work--hats off to them.  Many of those had their sig. others with them as "ride-alongs" on location.  Of course, that will only work on certain sorts of jobs....

Ahh, the carney with teeth. The crew that are willing to travel where they can find work. They are great at networking, seem to be very adept at thier craft. The come in gun ho running the show, but by mid show are starting to slow down, letting others take the lead then at the end they are hard to find on set as they are working to find the next gig. Most are loaners who might befriend a few, but once the job is done, never hear of them again.

I traveled quite a bit nationally and also internationally although not as much as stateside. What Post #2 asked, what aspect? If you're looking for "generally" this thread is going to wander aimlessly.

Yeah, you need a more specific question than that.

 

I've travelled extensively for work, generally to off-grid / unusual locations.  (Arctic, many parts of coastal BC accessible only by boat).  What kind of travel are you considering?

I'm currently on a year-long film tour (not sound work), travelling to rural locations across Canada.  I can say a lot about travelling / living on the road, but much may not be relevant to you unless you are doing that kind of travel.
