Andysound
Not sure if this is the right area to post in but I'm looking for info on the AKAI LPD8 midi controller http://www.akaipro.com/lpd8 If someone could point me in the direction on "how to map midi controllers to wave files" would be great. What I'm trying to do is turn this controller (and my Mac Book Pro) into a "360 Shortcut". I would like to assign wave files to the pads to play them as sound effects or even music for playback situations on set. I have Pro Tools but have never dealt with the midi side of things. Thanks Andy
John Steigerwald
Something like VSamp might work for you.

soundtrane
Not necessarily wrong forum Senator... I have been using a midi keyboard to trigger SFX from libraries. Using Kontakt as my sampler... I'm still playing around with it a bit, so I can't offer solid advice yet Andy...
studiomprd
OK, but I still think JWsound.net is still the wrong forum to get much good, accurate information in response to that query! This is not production sound or movie sound equipment or software... perhaps JW should add a new TOPIC ??

Akai makes controllers, as does Novation, Korg, Livid and others. Cool tools to build out / customize your rig are made by Cycling74 and plogue. There are some very cool videos on the cycling74 website showing how Max / Ableton can be used to not only trigger playback in real time but control myriad things. I think though the Senator has a point though, there are forums focused on these tools and their use. Celac
Sam Mallery
+1 for using Ableton Live software for this. If what you need to do isn't very complex, you can likely get away with using Live Lite software. Live Lite is a free version of Ableton Live which is often included on a DVD disc when you buy MIDI controller hardware. From the product description of of LPD8, it doesn't state that Live Lite is included, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's included. If not, you can likely find someone who does have an unused copy of Live Lite laying around.
Andysound
Thanks for all suggestions, I downloaded the Abelton demo and will try to figure it out. As for the wrong forum, maybe the wrong section but not the wrong forum. I think we can all agree that the days of doing audio playback on a Nagra with a grease pencil and some sticky dots are over. 90% of audio playback on set is done with some type if computer be it laptop, full Pro Tools HD or some type of hard disk playback system. Maybe we can get a section devoted to Audio Playback.
nickreich
Hi Andy, +2 on Ableton Live for that, but the Theatre Sound world has various other options that would do what you want. Qlab (http://figure53.com/qlab/) is a popular one for the Mac. There is a free version that only has stereo out, and paid versions with multiple outputs. You need the paid 'Pro Midi' version to trigger sounds from your Midi pads, but the free version can assign 'hotkey' triggers to cues so they'll fire instantaneously when a computer keyboard key is pressed. The great thing about Qlab for playback jobs is that it will happily play multichannel polyphonic wav files so you can prep playback files with stems and a linear (audio) timecode track and play it out a multi-output sound card like a MOTU. cheers nick

Maybe we can get a section devoted to Audio Playback. Take some time to do the built-in tutorial lessons. They can be found in the Help menu: Help > Lessons Their built-in lessons are really good. They'll get you up to speed pretty quickly with some of the slightly unusual ways that Live operates. One way to do what you want to do is to load Live's Impulse instrument into a track, and then drop your samples into Impulses' virtual drum pads. If you don't have the LPD8 yet, you can assign keys on your computer keyboard to trigger the samples. If I remember correctly, this is done by clicking on the keyboard logo in the upper right corner of the screen, then I believe that everything you can assign to the keyboard is shaded yellow, you click on the pad in Impulse you want to assign, and then press the key on your keyboard that you want to trigger it with. Click on the keyboard icon to exit the assign mode.
