Cold Weather gear...

Well, seriously now, i think that blowing in a glove, filling it with warm but humid air is a really stupid idea.  Moisture is not really a good way of keeping warm.  I was out doing a doc yesterday in the Montreal region, and it was -20 degree celsius not counting the windchill factor.  I had a pair of Outdoor research mitts made for Everest assault and was still freezing my fingers.  Hand warmer are really the only way for me.

After Goretex, this is absolutely, hands down, the best thing I have EVER owned for working in cold weather.  The rest of the crew can always tell when I am wearing it by the Cheshire grin on my face.  I wore it all winter, both at work and on my motorcycle.  No.... Not the girl, the VEST!  It's battery powered and heated!  HIGHLY recommended!

It is true that certain crew members (like the sound mixer) have trouble staying warm with conventional gear that relies on generating warmth from activity that is a little bit more strenuous than SITTING DOWN...  I think the girl could be helpful here but probably not practical. This active solution seems like a good idea.

Of course, if money is no object, and you're not moving the cart any time soon, try this:

I have a Deer Blind similar to this http://www.deerblinds.net/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=10

It works quite well for keeping me out of the sun and folds up into a backpack it has a built in floor which is great because it keeps everything clean. I usually just grab a few sand bags from the grip truck to weight it down and thats it. For a few outdoor films it was great because it disappeared in the background so I didn't even have to move when they changed angles

Come on Darren, the GIRL, not the VEST, seems to me like the best choice hands down. Who would opt for practicality over true comfort?

For a cart-based setup, I'm sold my old ALLPRO radiant heater. A single 20# (BBQ size) LPG tank gets me through several days of serious cold. Unlike Mr. Heater or others with a metal-grid style burner (really noisy), this one has a ceramic element, cranks out some serious BTUs, and is totally silent. It's light-weight, smaller than a lunch box, can be mounted on the LP tank itself or a gobo head, super clamp, etc. I don't know if the ceramic type is still readily available, but it's worth a search.

The only problem is that the sound dept becomes THE place to hang out between shots. At wrap, it's like a damn campfire circle. If you really want to piss off those stuck fast on a cold post, show up with a stick and bag of marsh mellows. WARNING: Not for use in an enclosed area or tent, etc...Duh!

IMHO, nothing beats Northern Outfitters extreme gear for sitting on your butt and keeping warm.  Expensive as hell, but it works VERY well.  http://www.northernoutfitters.com/s-4-boots.aspx

This looks very cool.  I like my pop-up but it takes up too much room in the van and takes too long to set up and break down.

they are great, but then you have to deal with all the "Hey, I didn't know Gene Simmons was going to be here today..." jibes....
