Mike W
Hello, My name is Mike, and I am a sound designer in the UK. I also teach sound design for moving image in addition to working in sound design for fine art, working with artists on their sound projects. I am writing a final paper for a university level teaching qualification and it would be immensely helpful if anyone could help with my research. I am looking for articles on sound "pedagogy" (for lack of a less academic term). What articles exist on this subject? I am currently looking for articles about *how* to teach sound, that is how sound is shared with students. Does your work have internal documentation on what or how to teach new sound staff? Does your college have any internal documents on this subject? Is there a journal article you have read? Anything could be interesting. I am looking for articles and books. All the Best Mike W London, UK
Marc Wielage
A few books I'd recommend: Producing Great Sound for Digital Video by Jay Rose published by CMP Books [iSBN 1578202086] Audio Postproduction for Digital Video by Jay Rose Published by CMP Books [iSBN 1578201160] Sound for Film and Television by Tomlinson Holman Published by Focal Press [iSBN 0240804538] Sound for Digital Video by Tomlinson Holman published by Focal Press [iSBN 0240807200] Sound for Picture by Tom Kenny Published by Artistpro [iSBN 0872887243] The Foley Grail: The Art of Performing Sound for Film, Games, and Animation by Vanessa Theme Ament published by Focal Press [iSBN 0240811259] Sound-On-Film: Interviews with Creators of Film Sound by Vincent LoBrutto published by Praeger [iSBN 0275944433] Sync Sound for DAT, DV, and DVD by Wolf Seeberg www.wolfvid.com 24P For Sound and Video Assist by Wolf Seeberg www.wolfvid.com Audio Bootcamp Field Guide by Ty Ford http://web.mac.com/tyreeford Guide to the Nagra 4.2 and Production Sound Recording by Fred Ginsburg published by Equipment Emporium [iSBN #0971394105] Roll Sound: A Practical Guide for Location Audio by John Fielden published by CreateSpace [iSBN 1450549837] Location Audio Simplified by Dean Miles http://www.locationaudiosimplified.com/ The Practical Art of Motion Picture Sound by David L. Yewdall Published by Focal Press [iSBN 0240802888] Dialogue Editing for Motion Pictures: A Guide to the Invisible Art by John Purcell published by Focal Press [iSBN 0240809181] Each of these has tons of information on the subject, specific techniques, solutions for problems, the history of the technological developments, and the theory behind good practices. For a student leaning towards location sound, I would read the latter four books first. Be warned that, like all books on technology, these tend to go out of date very quickly. Be sure to get the latest editions, if newer ones are available. There's also a good bibliography at this link: http://www.filmsound.org/bibliography/littlist.htm --Marc W. ProSound
Location Audio Simplified by Dean Miles http://www.locationaudiosimplified.com/ Is a good hands on practical book. On my last film we had a sound PA and I gave him the book to read and it covers a good amount of basic sound knowledge and helps open a dialogue about basic set ups and theory. Marc Wielage
Just remembered a new one from Trew Audio: Sound Man: An Introduction to the Art, Science, and Business of Location Sound by Richard Patton http://www.trewaudio.com/store/product.php?productid=1120 I chuckled because the first chapter is all about rates and the importance of getting a deal memo. And this is before anything about wireless, mixers, recorders, or anything else! Actually a pretty good book, and an entertaining read. --Marc W. campbell
Although not a practical book one of my favorites is: Audio-Vision Sound on Screen, Michel Chion (1994, English version) its an incredible book with a strong narrative and simplicity. Another interesting writer is Siegfried Kracauer. The Chapter Dialogue and sound in Theory of film: THe redemption of physical reality (1960) is stunning. If anyone passionate about sound has not read the above mentioned work you need to get on it!
