Fiftyfoot
would I best choose to go from XLR to RCA? I'm looking to make cables to go out from a Wendt mixer, line in to a Tascam HD-p2. (Tascam's XLR's are mic only) Thanks, Scott

Eric Toline
Great, thanks. Was wondering about that extra pin. Scott If you have an RCA to RCA cable just cut off one end and attach the female XLR. Going from a balanced connection to an unbalanced connection you have to connect pins 1 & 3 to ground to unbalance the circuit. Splitting the shield is a lot easier than connecting the ground to pin 1 and wiring a jumper to pin 3. Eric
Derek H
Eric, Isn't there also the scenario where you have active balanced outputs (like on the 302) which require the 3rd pin to remain unconnected in order to unbalance the circuit? studiomprd
" active balanced outputs ...) which require the 3rd pin to remain unconnected in order to unbalance the circuit? " yes, which is why it is preferred to properly deal with not only the balancing/unbalancing, but also the impedance change by using a transformer or active circuit to deal with interconnect issues. By shorting pin 3 to ground you are unconnecting pin 3 from the circuit. Eric
