dominiquegreffard Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 Hi guys, After spending the whole day standing up carrying my eng bag in a nowhere to sit location, i was thinking to myself if there could be a way that i could carry around a super light foldable chair for all those waiting wish i could sit moments. Any suggestions people?
Zack Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 You can find great little folding chairs at local sports/outdoor stores. I would recommend the red one though
Peter Mega Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 This doesn't answer your question but I've often dreamed about a telescopic pole/mono pod type thingy that is built in or attached to the bottom of the bag and with the flick of a button, it extends down to touch the ground and take the weight of the bag off your body. Then when you have to move, press the same button and the pole retracts smoothly and very quickly so you can move. Repeat the process when you find your next spot to stand etc etc. All this happens very quietly of course. Its also biult to be flush with the bottom of the bag so you can set the bag down when required. Can someone please make this and ensure its strong, durable and very cheap. dominique, I've had plenty of those wishing I could sit moments and its not because we're lazy, I just want to get the weight off for a few minutes to ease the back. Not sure what a realistic answer is apart from carrying a chair around along with everything else. Cheers Peter Mega
takev Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 Something like this maybe? http://www.amazon.com/Sima-SMP-1C-Monopod/dp/B000165GJI Attach it to the side of the bag so the bottom is flush with it. Of course it takes too much time to extend and retract it.
Peter Mega Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 kinda... it needs to be coming from the bottom of the bag, in the middle so the weight distribution is even. From the side would push the bag kinda sideways when its extended to the ground. I'm also imagining some really nice machinery of the telescopic sections, without locks for each section and some very lightweight hydraulics to make it extend and retract smoothly and quickly with a one touch button and the hydraulics also makes it stay out when extended. (maybe this could be done with springs?) Nice smooth shiny, expensive looking material. (even though it probably has to be matt black, carbon fibre maybe) It would also have enough length to "self adjust" to the un-even ground you may be standing on and ofcourse for taller or shorter guys/gals. Bear in mind, this things weighs virtually nothing so everyone would want it ofcourse. I then make squillions of $$$ for coming up with the idea and retire happily ever after.
Peter Mega Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 Not me, I live in Australia, must be dominique. Glad we dont have a show like that here!!

Brent Lestage Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 May I suggest... http://www.rastorder.com.au/product_mb.htm
dominiquegreffard Posted August 7, 2011 Author Report Posted August 7, 2011 Thanks for the input guys! Yeah a little chair like this will probably be it for now. And yeah peter i m totally for your idea too. Would be nice but It would have to be really light... Any engineers around?
Philip Perkins Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 You can find great little folding chairs at local sports/outdoor stores. I would recommend the red one though The left hand stool is what I have. If you are a largish person, make sure the max weight the thing can take is more than you+ your rig. I found that most of what REI sold was too wimpy for me+bag (after collapsing a few). The one on the left was just barely capable. The problem of course is that the stool usually isn't close by when you have a second to rest, unless you carry it with you all the time, or it is borne by a Charming Assistant for you (...right). Nothing like one of those long days with no relief to focus the mind on lightening the bag... My actual current fave field recording accessory is a humble rectangular plastic milk crate. Protect your bag when on the move, sit on it between takes, stand on it for booming--much easier to stand on than a standard full apple-box. Paint SOUND on it in big ugly letters or it will disappear immediately. phil p
David Lezynski Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 Duluth Trading has 22,26,30 inch walkaround stools...... They say the capacity is 550lbs, weighs 2 lbs, about $100, Swedish made. I'm a beefball and havent collapsed it yet. http://www.duluthtrading.com/store/product/walkstool-comfort-26-inches-92255.aspx?ev3=recommended_products Dave L

Wyatt Tuzo Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 While we're on the subject. (and I hope I'm not hijacking the thread here) What are some of your favorite folding chairs for cart-based mixing? I'm in the market, and I'm a little stuck on what I want. Figured I could benefit from cross-section of opinions. Thanks!
Brent Lestage Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 Wyatt, I really like mine... http://www.amazon.co.../ref=pd_sim_k_4 It's compact and light, has side storage pockets and, best of all, a fold-out side tray! My only complaint is that it isn't a little taller. -- Brent
Wyatt Tuzo Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 Thanks Brent, Yeah, I think I was looking at that one. I like the pockets and the fold-away tray. My wife (after giggling at witnessing me try it on my own) graciously measured my butt height, while I mocked sitting at my ideal mixing height. It looks like I'm ideally looking for something in the 24" seat height neighborhood.
Brent Lestage Posted August 7, 2011 Report Posted August 7, 2011 Don't lose that woman, Wyatt! Any wife that will graciously measure your butt height is worth keeping!
Paul Graff Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 First to the OP. As you are a woman, perhaps the three-legged stools will work for you. I find them very uncomfortable in...uhhh...the front. The best folding stool along those lines BY FAR is this one: http://www.camptime.net/roll-a-chair.htm The top is flat. Actually flat. It has a back if you want it, but since the back flips back it is still small. I actually use this one at my cart now and the Costco folding chair with the side table stays at home. (It's a lot like the one Brent referenced, but without the side storage pocket. Btw, props will give you one of those pockets if you are nice to them.) Anyway, all that being said I never carry a chair on ENG/documentary jobs and even the roll-a-chair would be too big for that. For your question I would recommend this: http://www.galaxyarmynavy.com/item-4545.asp I worked on a reality show once and the other mixer had this in the front pouch of his bag and would always have a place to sit. It's a bit low, but the thing folds up really small. Truly practical to carry with you, unlike all these other options. In fact, I'm inspired to order one right now. For that price why not? Paul

Looks great, though only holds up to 80kg, meaning I'd have to take the bag off first...
studiomprd Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 " never carry a chair on ENG/documentary jobs " another "It depends", as I've been on a lot of ENG/EJ jobs with lots of sitting and waiting (example: stakeouts)
Paul Graff Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 Looks great, though only holds up to 80kg, meaning I'd have to take the bag off first... Might work for the OP, tho' And hopefully the weight limit is a bit conservative. And if it collapses I only fall a few inches and provide cheap amusement for my crewmates.
Paul Graff Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 " never carry a chair on ENG/documentary jobs " another "It depends", as I've been on a lot of ENG/EJ jobs with lots of sitting and waiting (example: stakeouts) Not another "it depends". Another misread, misunderstood, distortingly partially quoted, hastily commented upon, extraneous post. It was a personal statement of fact that I, Paul Graff, do not carry a chair on ENG/documentary jobs. But now that I bought a little Army/Navy store stool I might very well start.
André Boisvert Posted August 8, 2011 Report Posted August 8, 2011 First to the OP. As you are a woman, Dominique is a given name that can be used for both sexes. In this case, he's a dude. I really like the camouflage chair. Thanks for the link.
RobertKennedy Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 I got one of these and it fits the bill with one major exception: squeaky fabric. http://www.rei.com/product/783457/gci-outdoor-xpress-lounger-chair
Jim Gilchrist Posted August 9, 2011 Report Posted August 9, 2011 I got one of these and it fits the bill with one major exception: squeaky fabric. http://www.rei.com/p...s-lounger-chair I bought a pair a couple of summers ago for kayak camping trips. The'll get quiet if exposed to the elements for a while, but they won't get lighter. They are very comfortable, really sturdy and get reasonably small but do weigh a little! Best regards, Jim
