Ludovic Lasserre
Hi guys, I've got a shoot coming up, on which we will spend a number of days filming in a room with a fairly big skylight (something like 3x3 meters, maybe). Maybe 1/4 of the entire dialogue of the film is in there, so it needs to sound right. This is in London, so the probability of rain at some point during those shoot dys is quite high. I'm thinking of getting some hogs hair and laying it down on top of the skylight (they don't need the natural light coming in, supposed to play for a cellar), maybe 2 layers. This is something I've never done before, only read about here and other places. I'm wondering where to get hog's hair from?? In London (or UK) in particular, but also in general just what kind of places (DIy stores?). Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thes shoot's starting in 10 days, but we're not in that location before a good 20 days. Thanks Ludovic

Don't know if you have a Home Depot there but I would think you have a similar type of place. www.homedepot.com. Eric
Jim Gilchrist
Hi, Ludovic Like Eric said, it's furnace filter material. So maybe an industrial supply place or furnace supplier as well? When I needed a lot for a job I purchased it from Grainger's here in the US and I think I paid about $180 for a 48 inch X 30 foot long roll of 1 inch thick material. it's also available in 2 inch thick rolls, but in slightly narrower and shorter rolls if I recall correctly. McMaster Carr also carries it here in the US but in a much more limited selection of sizes. Hog hair filters were originally a natural fiber coated with something (neoprene I think) but now there's also a version that's made of rigid polyester fiber, so searching for "rigid polyester air filter" might also help track down a supplier in the UK. Best regards, Jim
RPSharman
In this situation, a few layers of fabric (blankets) might also do the trick, if you have trouble sourcing hog's hair.

Geoff Tirrell
You could also try some polyester quilt batting. Pretty similar stuff and if you get a thicker density it should be in a 5 foot wide role or so at your local fabric store.
Olle Sjostrom
If the skylight is to be covered for light anyway, isn't this a gaffer's issue as well? I thought maybe you guys could could work something out together...
Malcolm Davies Amps CAS
Ludovic! It's very hard to source in the UK but I buy mine from a company in Market Deeping near Peterborough called Woolies 01778-347347. www.woolies-trim.co.uk They specialise in stuff for car restoration and sell sheets of rubberised horsehair 6 feet x 3 feet x 1 inch thick. The part number is 36 and its about £35 inc. V.a.t. per sheet. You will only need to cover the whole window with 1 layer to achieve what you want. Malcolm Davies. A.m.p.s.
