allenc3
I have an MKH8060 and an MKH8050 that I use on location for the last 18 months. Both work fine and sound great, amazing even sometimes. I refer to the 8060 as Magic Mike because of how it has at times pulled high quality sound out of difficult situations. I have not had any of the problems mentioned here with my mics, although... Before I bought one I sampled a 8060 from the local Senn rep and when I first connected it to my SD702 it made the very noticeable self noise mentioned in this thread. I thought wow for a serious mic this thing is noisy as hell. I recorded it and sent it to Senn, had a few email exchanges about it but nothing definitive. When I powered down the 702 and restarted it the mic was dead quiet and worked well. I think Senn thought it was a recorder problem, but I told them that has never happened in 5 years with any other mic on that machine. I bought mine and have not had any problems. However I did notice the sample 8060 had about 5 dB higher gain than the new one I bought.

RadoStefanov
I just got a brand new MKH8060 and it has the same issues although not as loud and not as often as my old one. tried different booms, cables, mixers and recording devices. I am giving up on these mics and will borrow cmit5 to test.
r.paterson
I had a 8060 and immediately had the problems mentioned on this thread I handed it back , I got a sanken cs1e the newer version and with a DIY rit angle xlr fits perfectly in a rycote windjammer 1 for a great compact shotgun mic setup I think its a very underrated mic..richard. Jared Detsikas
Hey Rado, Does the new 8060 you just got have a serial number from after they fixed the problem even? I was going to the rental house tomorrow to go check it out… Was also gonna compare it to the CMIT as well but liked the idea of the compactness of the 8060. jonathan chiles
Just sent mine off to Sennheiser for repair/replacement. I am starting to regret selling my CS1e.. I hope Sennheiser have identified what the issue is and can fix, great little mic when its not hissing or popping!
RadoStefanov
Jonathan , from personal and other people experience just sell yours after it comes back and buy a different boom mic you can rely on. Stay away from mkh8060 and mkh8070. Mkh8040 and mkh8050 are fine.
jonathan chiles
Thanks for advice Rado, will see how things go. I have 416 and a CS3e so will continue with those but 8060 with the WS1 was a very compact setup to travel with which I like.. maybe I'll switch to the MKH50 for travel gigs. John Blankenship
I love it when manufacturers care. It makes our lives so much better. It's not so much an issue when things are working perfectly, although good communication still helps then, but when there are problems, it's a huge deal! Welcome, SennheiserPS. RadoStefanov
I sent an email and I hope that this "great sounding" microphone can turn in to something else then very expansive paperweight.
JDirckze
Bravo Sennheiser! My 8060 came back from Germany a couple of months ago and has been working great ever since...

jonathan chiles
Sennheiser Product Specialist, welcome and thanks for taking the time to post here and reassure us that have invested in the MKH series. The 8060 is a great mic and glad to hear that you are committed to making them dependable and problem free like the rest of the range. Sean ONeil
SennheiserPS, 1) Can you please identify the "isolated batch" of faulty MKH 8060 mic's by a range of serial numbers for us? That would inspire confidence in people looking to buy used 8060 mic's. Until then, I would avoid purchasing ANY 8060 mic like the plague. 2) Can you confirm Rado's statement that the MKH 8070 IS susceptible to these problems as well, but NOT the 8040 and 8050's? Cheers, Sean O'Neil Brooklyn, New York
RadoStefanov
I have 2 friends: 1 friend has issues with mkh8060 and mkh8070 where mkh8070 happens once in a while. 2nd friend has no problems with mkh8060 and issues with mkh8070 I had 2 different mkh8060 that had issues. I have 4 mkh8040 that have never suffered from any issues... As far as I know no issues have been reported with mkh8040 and mkh8050 The mkh8040 and mkh8040 were designed and came up before the 8060 and 8070. Something happened between the 2 "not exactly sure" when Europe made lead solder illegal and euro companies had to redesign their electronics. johnpaul215
I bought an 8040 in 2009 and it has been flawless. I know somebody that bought an 8050 a few months ago and he's getting perfect results. I don't think I read about anyone having an issue with an 8050 or 8040, just isolated to some of the bigger guys.
RadoStefanov
Sennheiser replaced my mic and it works great. If you have problems contact the senheiserPS. Great service. Better late then never.
jonathan chiles
Just got my 8060 back from Germany yesterday after 6 weeks turnaround. (I am in South Africa) have not yet used it on a shoot to see if the fizzing problem is still there but have noticed it now has a noticeable background hiss. Called Sennheiser in Germany today and waiting for some info back from them. Needless to say I am annoyed and unhappy that the mic was sent back to me in this condition and have no choice but to recommend others to stay well away from the 8060 until we have definitive information from Sennheiser letting us know what the heck is going on with these mics. JDirckze
That's really disappointing Jonathan. Sometimes you wonder if these techs even listen to the mics before sending them back out. I've had something similar happen to me in the past.
