And now I need work....(mixer/boom-)op

Recommended Posts

I wrote this whole long paragraph about myself that somehow didn't get posted. (maybe I accidentally deleted it before I hit post)

Here is the short of it

I'm Chris.

I recently moved from Chicago to LA

I have about 5 years doing production / post production audio

I run a Metacorder cart that is controlled wirelessly.

Vin - talking about being a moron or forgetful, I notice the links in your profile page are 404 errors. I don't know what is worse, forgetting to post information, or posting links to information that doesn't exist.

I have been on here pretty regularly posting things since I have registered. I will be sticking around and getting to know some of you a little better.

I don't expect anyone to just throw me work, but I thought I would throw it out there

Go eat some bacon Justan. Oh, I mean HAM!

Just kidding ; )

I really liked the "Canada for President" video Jason Porter posted -- really funny.

Chris, hang in there -- this is really the best resource for Soundies I've found anywhere on the interwebs. Yes, you may find yourself dodging an occasional "arrow" (sorry Jeff, I couldn't resist... I was gonna say "bullet", but with the current state of affairs regarding guns, etc...)

I digress...

...most everyone here is harmless -- except the Canadians -- they have an agenda. They think they're so cool.

(it's often difficult to exhibit tone and inflection in the written word -- therefore, I feel compelled to reassure everyone that much of what I said here was in jest... I love Canada, go there often, and don't care if they want to call ham bacon... there are worse things to argue aboot.

Hey Chris,

I'm just curious... When you say you control a Metacorder rig wirelessly, what exactly do you mean? I run Metacorder on my cart, but have never had a need to control it wirelessly... I'd be interested to hear more if you don't mind elaborating (that's if you're even still around after the lashing you just got) :(

Vin, take is easy on a new person, no need to name call and completely over react.

Chris, sorry man...

Yeah Vin,

It's just that I vaguely recall someone rather high up in the ranks here on the JWSound forum not liking the analogous use of the 'a-word'... something about... overuse?

You're right though -- as much as I try to remain conscious of the fact that an adversarial position between the Sound Dept. and any other 'entity' will only add to our woes, ours is definitely still a war of attrition, and we need all the camaraderie we can get.

For what it's worth, I appreciate you quickness to admit your mistake and attempt at making amends.

Lol Taylor!!!

That's right we have an agenda. To turn you all socialist like us. Hahahaha. You will be forced to have free health care, gays can marry and the right to abortion.

Okay about the Canadian Bacon thing. You guys realize we don't have that in Canada right? It's just bacon. Not ham regular bacon. You guys call ham Canadian Bacon not us.

Thanks guys!

LMMFAO!! That actually made my stomach hurt, I laughed so hard -- totally made my day, eh!

Yeah Justan, I know -- Canadian bacon is to Canadians what French toast is to the French... stupid Americans... why do other countries hate us?

Anyhow, I hope Chris (OP) will get back on and explain his wireless Metacorder rig -- I'm intrigued.

So what we call American Cheese in Canada is called Back Cheese. Take off hoser. -- Bob & Doug MacKenzie

Wait. That's not right.

In Canada what American's call Canadian Bacon, we call Back Bacon. So you American's must call American cheese Back Cheese.

I think that's how that goes.

Never mind.

OSX has VNC server built in (since 10.4) With any tablet with VNC installed you can remote control your desktop, and use it as a touch screen monitor. If you have an IO with a software mixer (like the motu) you can also control your mix.

it's great when you need to go fix a LAV and you are not quite back to your cart whe "ROLL SOUND" gets called.

Ahhh, thanks Chris...

I figured it was something like that... Remote Desktop, etc... I routinely use my iPhone to interface my MBP for recording drum tracks (mostly MOTU's DP7) but haven't gone the VNC route yet -- have never really needed to. I've never tried it on set with Metacorder... seems like another variable, and potentially something to go wrong? I always thought the (up to) 30 sec. pre-roll function on Metacorder was sufficient... in any case, sounds like some rainy-day fun is in store for the near future : ) thanks man...

well, with vnc it is hard to screw something up, Worst case scenario is it just doesn't work. It's easy to tell when you hit the record button and it doesn't highlight, and the meters are frozen. It's been working really well for me. I do a lot of low budget stuff, so when I have to boom myself (or replace a bad boom op production gave me) I can still use the cart and have control. Plus, people always think it's neat!

I understand, but it is another link in the already complicated chain. Most of the veteran guys with whom I communicate are all about simplifying and eliminating variables.

Man! So, you're actually mixing recording to a cart and booming? -- obviously, non-union gigs... that's rough. I think I'd have a hard time with that... not that it would be impossible to do -- just get a bunch of ISO's and let post figure it out, I guess...

...but just on principle -- now these people (the same people who can't be convinced you need a Sound Utility) are gonna start thinking you don't need a Boom Op. (This topic has been discussed in other threads, but you reminded me of it, and I felt compelled to say something.)

I hope you don't make it a regular practice to operate as you described above. As cool as it is, you may be inadvertently setting a very dangerous precedent for yourself (and others)...

In any case, I don't want to harp on you about it -- the technology is very cool, and I can see it's advantages in certain situations...
