  1. If you don't give a flying fuck, why did you enter into this conversation? Just to try and get in on some of the action? I didn't assume anything either. Your previous post very glaringly indicates you didn't read everything. It's obvious that you skimmed a good bit.
  2. That would be nice for you right? Then you wouldn't have to live with the fact that you acted like a huge troll throughout this entire thread because it would be erased.
  3. How is stating a fact digging anything? This is what I don't get about the people here. There are different levels of knowledge and skill. We are on the extremely low end right now but that doesn't mean we're idiots and can't make something decent just because we're not pros. I mean I stated he knows probably just enough for us to get by... How is this in any way shunning what Marc said or not listening to it? I responded to him before that and agreed with him and thanked him for his help...
  4. Oh and also to Marc Wielage. My cousin doesn't have anything professional level under his belt but he's been editing film and audio for probably 13 or 14 years. He started out on Super 8 with a splicer. He knows probably just enough for us to get by in post on the sound side of things. We're expecting it to be good enough for what this is and hopefully a huge learning process for him since this is the first really lengthy thing he's ever done. I don't know if they teach any audio post in film school or not but he graduated film school and did a film for that etc...
  5. I'm not going to enumerate for you once again all the places you made broad generalizations and assumptions directed at me. There's a reason that in conversation you're supposed to respond to what the other person actually says or asks and not go off on an un-asked for, philosophical, journey into all the things I should have already done before I dared ask a question here or before I dared consider buying equipment you think is overkill for my project. That reason is because respectful communication because with listening and then reciprocating in kind. It's mind numbingly irritating to have to wade through all the nonsense on a forum... Internet commandos are EVERYWHERE. In my opinion, if you don't have anything to say about what I actually asked, why say anything? I'm grown just like you and I know when I need to study more or do more research. I know what my capabilities are just like you know what yours are. Mutual respect isn't something "earned" as people like to state, it's something we inherently should receive as free human beings until we no longer deserve it. Making assumptions about my skill levels and what I need or don't need and then telling me what I should do instead of what I asked about just shows a complete lack of any respect for the other person involved in the conversation. Almost EVERYTHING you mentioned in your first response to me was something I already know about and have already put into practice on the set. That doesn't mean I'm good at it but it means I already know about it and the rest is going to be trial and error learning experiences on my end.
  6. I know renting makes more sense to most people but it doesn't for me. That's just a personal preference thing that I realize sounds crazy to most. I get that. Hiring someone to do anything is completely out of the question. We are all noob enough that we want to noob this up together and see what we can come up with and what we learn for the next go round. As for the analogy, I fully expect the sound work to be exactly like ripping out an appendix using the book, "How To Be Your Own Doctor." We're ok with that and we will learn from this. I've done sound recording and editing for about 8 years as a hobby in my home for music mostly. That's my only relative experience other than the few shoots I've been a part of so far. I understand how sound works and what it is. I taught myself to play piano and guitar (and still learn new stuff all the time) and so got interested in sound from a scientific point of view and just studied it on my on for a while. I took music in college. I realize none of this is related to sound recording on a set etc... Just a background of why I like the idea of learning it. I understand the thing about the pros not liking the low-paid or the undercutters. Thing is, I stated early on that's not even me... This project would never have a paid sound guy anyway, ever. Other projects may in the future but unless I'm actually that competent by then, it wouldn't be me doing it. I also realize there are some good guys here because a lot of them PM'd me and I really appreciate that from the folks that did. I purchased one DVD on the basics but it's a little bit too basic for my current level. It was called Sound for Film and Television. I ordered a couple of books that haven't arrived yet but I WAS wondering where to go with reading material and/or some instructional dvd material after that. I will definitely check out those books and that site you linked. Thank you for taking the time to do that.
  7. If by everyone you mean 5 or 10 people strutting around on a forum, sure I do. I have at least 4 or 5 in messages that think you guys were being dicks too so that kinda equals out. Opinions are like assholes and all that...
  8. My skin is impervious. I'm just responding in kind. Once again you tell me to "admit" that I know nothing etc... How many times do I have to ACTUALLY admit that in this thread before people realize I said it from the very beginning?? Makes absolutely no sense... I do NOT plan on doing anything in this field that isn't helping out another noob... I won't be walking from my friends to the "real world" as you say, to record audio as a job... I've stated this many times. It seems to me, it's the folks on this forum that can't take it... A noob stating he's a noob and asking questions!?!? For shame! I shall now insult his intelligence, assume the worst and perpetually troll with useless information to show him how much smarter about this topic I am than he is...
  9. So you think it's not logical for a person to have an attitude at this point? If you go back and read the thread, you can see the progression of things turned ugly when certain people started purposefully making negative comments and trolling the thread. I think I have a right to an attitude after that. It's crazy how much this forum thinks its shit don't stink...
  10. How exactly would you suggest that I get over myself? From the very beginning I explained how noobish I was... I'm guessing maybe you're another person who didn't actually READ the thread, just jumped on a bandwagon. Also, I will definitely return and show you guys what we made. I fully expect the sound to be sub-par to this forum's members. I'm saying this now because people can't seem to get it through their heads that I realize I know nothing about sound recording for film or television stuff...
  11. Like I said. There are a lot of people here that would like to post but are also intimidated by the way this forum treats people. That should tell you something. I came back cause I got a bunch of private messages and saw that you guys were still going on about it.
  12. And to respond to the rest of your post... you are obviously SO biased that when you read through this thread, you didn't even see how abusive the people on this forum are in their responses. For your information, the main reason I stayed here is because I received 4 private messages from people giving me good advice and basically apologizing for how hostile this forum can be for people. One guy even said he's been on this forum since 2008 and has posted only a few times because of how hostile he sees the community being towards people that are not at the extreme top-end of knowledge and experience. Get over yourselves, really.
  13. Hey. I got what I needed in the end and I've already been turned on to a better forum by the Trew Audio sales guy. So long and thanks for all the fish.
  14. I think it's because a few pms'ing bad eggs came into the thread from the get go and set the standard for what your forum appears to be about to a newcomer.
  15. Point being, people didn't like the fact that I was brand spanking new to this so they responded inappropriately when they should've kept their fingers still if they didn't have anything to add that was constructive.
  16. We asked specifically for volunteers. We also wrote up contracts for EVERY volunteer that state if any money EVER comes from anything they have a part in, they will get paid but we don't intend to actually receive a dime on this one. We also feed everyone out of our pocket on every shoot etc... It's just a bunch of nice people having a good time and trying to make something.
  17. You confirmed exactly what I said in one of my previous posts about the attitude I was getting from people. I stated already that a lot of people are mad because upstarts come in that want to take their business. I stated many times that was not me and never would be and also, I never asked anyone to help me with anything but the what they thought about the combination of equipment and what cabling I might need to get started.
  18. I appreciate what you're saying Mr. Wexler but maybe you didn't read all the posts. Understandable. It's full of a lot of nonsense and childishness. (myself included). The sound WAS horrible until I went out this weekend to help and I improved the sound a massive amount on my own and identified some areas where some other equipment would really help us out. I am now trying to learn as much as possible to facilitate this. I did not come here for a class or anyone to divulge any secrets. I simply asked for advice on the products I had picked out from my research and I didn't know exactly what cabling I needed to order and was hoping someone would help me out with it.
  19. So I guess this forum is for...... what exactly? I see plenty of other posts asking about equipment or what's best or this or that. If I hadn't given my background and just came in here and said something like, "Hi. I'm new here. I'm buying this stuff. What do you think of said products and do you have any advice on said items?" I seriously doubt I would have gotten the response I did. Would you like me to prove that to you by searching and linking previous, similar posts? It might be a good lesson in perception for some people. Your perception of me was unfavorable from my first post because I said too much about myself and my experience (these kinds of forums are ALWAYS biased against lessor experienced people, ALWAYS.) and so judgements and assumptions were made that dictated the way people acted toward me. I can show you threads where people acted the opposite way because they were unsure of the skill level of an individual asking for advice about something.
  20. No money was spent to hire anyone. The director/writer is my cousin and best friend. The camera guy is a friend of my cousin's from back in high school. We lucked out cause he is having a blast doing this and the stuff he's shot so far is excellent. The actors are all Craigslist volunteers or friends of friends of friends we know that are into acting. Again... I bought the equipment because I wanted to and I want to learn how to use it. I promise everyone that's an OK thing to do. Really... I love doing that and learning new things in the process. I bought a boat like 4 months ago for 10k dollars just to see if I like boating. I didn't. I sold it yesterday and actually made 1k on it. No big deal. If I drop the cash and find out I can't learn it or I don't like it, I will sell it and move on. Once more, I didn't realize that this forum was all about judging a persons ability to do anything or their reasoning for doing it.
  21. I did Autocockers for a while. They are super cool in concept but man, nothing has ever been as accurate as my Automag. I've never encountered equipment that used one before. I mostly deal with computers etc... You do realize that a technophile could be a technophile about other fields of technology right? This post you just made is the epitome of trolling. You just scan through what I've said looking for something to refute. It must be a sad life to do that purposefully on a forum to someone you don't even know.
  22. That's funny coming from a "know it all" like yourself. You assumed so many things right from the beginning. I know your type to the letter man. I've spent most of my adult life profiling in the CJ field. You're an easy one to read. I also don't really see how my response to someone else, not Rob, had anything to do with a lack of humility. I already thanked him for that in a previous post with NO mention that I had thought of that before and completely forgot. Also, I DID completely forget and probably would not have remembered that if he hadn't mentioned that. He saved the day in my book and I said as much in a previous post. If you paid attention, you would have seen that.
  23. Again, not the point. I want to do it for the experience. The director wants to do it for the experience. The camera guy wants to do it for the experience. We are all learning tons as we go and that's my favorite part about it. Learning stuff. If I just donated 5k or 10k or 20k or whatever, it was cease to be a small time project where people completely new to this created something they are personally proud of. I don't understand why no one gets that? Money is IRRELEVENT TO ME. I could spend 1 dollar or 1million dollars on sound equipment and it would change nothing about the reasons I'm doing it or what our goal is. I simply want to have a sound kit that I can START learning how to use on this first project while simultaneously having fun and creating something. I'm a bit of a technophile and owning a lot of this kit is part of the fun for me.
  24. If you will re-read the stuff you said to me and the way it was worded, it sounds pretty bad. Maybe that wasn't your intention but my idea of this forum was soured after the first couple of responses I received. It makes sense that everything else after that is tainted to my perception somewhat. I respect the fact that a lot of you guys had to claw your way up in the sound business and work is hard to find for MANY people in MANY industries right now. I tried to say early on that I'm not here to threaten that in any way. This will probably NEVER be a paying thing for me and my cousin who is running the show may NEVER pay for audio in his whole lifetime. It's already an understood thing between me and him that if he hits it big with anything he does, I would step aside (or down to a helping hand type role) for a pro audio guy. Possibly at that point I really could learn some stuff from a pro. I don't know where you get the idea that I think I'm so much smarter than anyone here. I came in simply asking questions and found hostility and assumptions abounding on this forum. I kept responding because I know how forums work and someone DID come along with something I hadn't thought of (calling a real, competent audio sales person for my order) and saved the day for me. It did cross my mind to do that early on in the process but not being up on anything in the industry, I didn't even know what a competent audio place would be. I then forgot about doing that during all my research and learning about techniques, equipment, lingo, etc... Atheisticmystic has been a detriment to the forum from the beginning of this thread. I really hope the rest of you don't support that kind of abusive attitude toward new members.
  25. Using vocabulary to try and make yourself sound intelligent does not make what you have to say intelligent.
