  1. Hello Everyone.

I purchased a 788t a year ago from a local professional and it came with a few cards. Lately, I've thinking it would be a smart idea to get a couple new ones. However, the Delkin UDMA7 cards are not easy to find. What you guys using that works well and is still available? Any suggestions welcome.

    Thanks!

When field recording I still find the 7 series easier to work with than the Mixpre, and the limiters are miles better.

The little 1 inch square screen and my fat fingers didn't get along. I wound up using my pinky most of the time!

Are there any sound recordists here relying specifically on recording to computer only without running an external backup recorder?

That would be professional suicide. Always use a backup.

The Mackie half jack is disturbing to look at and is unbalanced, but I've never had any issues with it.

  4. The 788 is a fantastic piece of kit! I just returned an MP10 II and snagged a 788 with the CL-8 for a grand more. The sound alone is worth it. I compared the AtoD stage and the 788 is in another league next to the MP. Plus you get internal and redundant recording, decent powering, AES I/O, multiple analog I/O, better headphone amp, ect. I called SD to make sure that they plan on servicing these units in the future. Yes, it weighs more, but I don't use a bag.

  5. Hello Engineers!

I recently acquired a 788 CL8 combo. I have a question regarding panning. I see where I can pan a pair of linked channels, but can I pan a mono input other than simply hard L/R or center?

    Thanks in advance!

  6. Thanks for the input guys! I forgot about that one issue since I usually take an interface and Macbook pro into the field. It may be worth the extra money to have an internal SSD. But as a couple people have pointed out, there are no bullet proof solutions to what we do, or else backups would be obsolete!

Which Scandisk cards are you using? It looks like the biggest issue is the read/write speed and the SD branded do 90mb/sec.

I imagine it's cheaper to build. More power is required for +4. I am selling a mint F4 in part due to that limitation. Gainstaging between the F4 and cameras is a pain when you can't send a strong enough signal. Often I had to use the Mic inputs on cameras with the input's turned way down.

Anyone wanting a perfect condition F4 and an Orca-28 bag, heck out my auction:

I thought the -10 dbV was a hotter unbalanced signal than the the balanced +4dbu. No?

  8. Shure condensors are quite respected for their low self noise. If you check the specs, it shows the lowest in the industry. They are a very good value, just not as smooth in the 2-7K range as schoeps or MKH series.Just put them in an ORTF pattern, or one that gives a wide image such as NOS. Stay away from X-Y!

  9. I have one question about powering. The manual claims that it can take a Sony NP battery in addition to the sled of AA's. But I can't tell (even after reading the manual) where the NP attaches to the unit. Is anyone using this type of battery with this unit?

  10. The 7 series have differing Pre-amp technologies - the 744 (and 702/722) are very similar, but the 788T is a completely different design.

The 442 and 552 have transformer-based preamps, the 664 has transformer-less pres (very similar to the 744T design), and the 633 is slightly different again. Finally, the equivalent input noise specs of the 633 are higher than that of the 744T and 788T, equal with those of the 552 and 664. You would have to compare them to see if they fit your needs. I can hear slightly more noise in my 633 than my 744 at mic level with both trims opened fully. The difference in the noise spec between the 744T and the 633 is 4dB. (-126dbu vs -130dbu)

As for the 4 additional tracks, the 633 allows you to record the L and R mix buss, and gives you the option to record two Aux busses as well.

Justin, thank you! I wasn't aware that the there was even a difference within the 700 series. I have the option to use outboard pre amps (you know how snobby us classical guys can be) so it may just boil down to the difference in AtoD converters. The 633 looks like a great value; 2 less tracks than the 788 at half the cost.

  11. I'm wondering how the 6xx series sounds compared to the 7XX series. Has anyone A/B'ed them? Since I record mostly classical music performances, I am particulary interested in the quality of the mic preamps and AtoD converters.

I haven't dug into the manual yet, but am still wondering where the other 4 tracks (in adddition to the 6 inputs) are recorded from.

  12. I have a new Sony NP 4800mAh battery and it's been sitting for a couple years. The smaller that came with my 702 gets used mostly. Now I have gig and want to use the larger battery, but it's not holding much of charge. The SD702 shuts down at 7volts and is not draining the battery completely. What is the best way to break it in?

    Thanks! Don

  13. I looked at the JoeCo boxes when I was asked to record four music artists for a two day shoot. I ended up buying the Behringer X32 and recording straight into Pro Tools. The console gave me some powerful routing capabilities and it really sounds excellent with the Midas pres. It provides 32 mic pres, 32 tracks into Pro Tools with barely any setup, and a host of other features. At $3000 the console is a steal. A small footprint too.

The JoeCo is definitely a nice box and I see the attraction: small size, high track count, LTC, reliable. All the things we like in our location gear.

    Mark O.

Did you use ASIO/firewire? PT saw the X32 as an interface? Thanks!
