ENG for local news

Hey there, I am a recent Columbia College graduate trying to do location sound in LA.  I am very interested doing ENG sound mixing for a local news station and eventually a show that I can do some traveling for, but I have no clue where to begin.  Has anyone worked for the local news or know a sound guy who does? I'd love to get some advice on starting this type of career.  Thanks.

Field crews for local news are pretty much 1 man band type of gig's. The camera op has 1 or 2 wireless receivers plugged into his camera and the reporter has a stick mic with a plug on transmitter. A sound guy has been eliminated for the most part.

sadly, my friend Eric is correct, and separate sound crew positions are rare. the new operations are even expecting the producer/reporters to be the shooter (one person band), too!!

the other thing is that TV news crew postions are frequently staff positions.

their might be some oppertunities in news magazine type shows (like TMZ ), and reality type shows (like COPS)

There are also documentary and reality shows shot ENG-style, and those can be pretty exciting (though often grueling), provided you're young and willing to travel.

You can check this site:

as one possible source for job ideas. But a lot has to do with who you know and who your contacts are in this specific part of the business.
