On initial ZMT3 transmitter tests, both "Remote Standby" and "LOW2" offer about a 2:1 battery life savings.

Good to know.  I've never really compared the difference in a measurable way.  Thanks

The transmitter only outputs 3.3 V though, according to the specs? So wouldn't this rule out the 4060 for instance? Or am I missing something (I'm not the most electronics-savvy I'll admit)?

While 3.3v may not "technically" be up to spec for some mics, in practice the 4060 performs just fine.  I am using a 4061 on a zmt3 as I type this and it sounds great.

That’s how I remember it.  They did so because there is little power consumption difference between RF power levels.  Sleep should still save battery life.

Exactly right.   I have been sleeping my zmt3 throughout the day today via zaxnet and it definitely makes a difference in battery life

12 hours is very cool, but I wonder on which power setting? When they say „up to 12 hours“?

Also, the dual MicroDot input is very nice. Already liked that on the Flex, but that was too large, now it’s getting more interesting. The whole shape that transmitter has now might enable better hiding compared to the regular ZMT

This is a good point.  Hopefully that's 12 hours at at least 50mw + recording.

  5. 12 hours on a single battery is pretty great.  I'm not familiar with the BT100 battery, and having already 2 different kinds of batteries for my lavs, I'm unlikely to want to add a 3rd.  I don't really do them, but there will be shows that will need the battery life.

  6. This looks like a nice and compact upgrade to my 4 channel bag.  I think the banked rotary encoders will be a great feature once getting used to using them.

I wonder if SD will be making their own control surface for this in the future.  If so, I'm in.  Not a big fan of layering faders to get past 8 pot count.

With the Icon system you can add additional fader panels to get as many faders as you need.  You don't have to use banks if you don't want.

  8. If used with an Icon M+ surface, can tracks 1-12 be controlled by the M+, or only with the rotary faders on the unit?

Of course, I wouldn’t expect them to. Mackie Control is capable of many controls so it remains to be seen how that will translate to the Scorpio. But generally, I think allowing 3rd party controller access is a brilliant move

    Found the MCU control list:

"Control and display parameters include the following: 1. Channel Name 2. Channel Faders 3. Channel Trims 4 Channel Pans 5. Channel Mutes 6. Channel Solos 7. Channel Record Arm/Disarm 8. Channel “fat channel” (Source, Limiter, HPF, EQ, Bus sends) 9. Channel bank switching 10. Bus Master Faders 11. Output Master Faders 12. Transport Controls"

    Agreed

I never liked the CL-12 anyway, and control for any (controller) is pretty cool - depending on the protocol used and if SD is going to allow control of as many functions as possible.

But what will sway me mostly to buy one, will be the extra features. If it’s „just“ a recorder with many inputs, I‘m not really all that interested. I‘m very curious what functions they imported from the MixPre, like the overdub and re-record, AutoMix and more?

That will make a big difference

It's Mackie Control so a lot of different surfaces should work, but SD sounds like they don't want to provide technical support for other surfaces understandably.

Kelsey, you and I are on the same wavelength. Exactly what I was thinking!

I have been toying with the idea of using an Icon M+ controller and Reaper for an in the box live mixing / recording rig to get rid of the console, but am always too worried about reliability for a live broadcast.  This plus a dante enabled effects server is much better.

  12. This is really exciting for me.  I've been considering a change to my dante system, one of the main things I want is to reduce the size from a full 16 fader console + stage boxes.  Scorpio plus a controller will be drastically smaller & lighter, and much easier to fly with.

Many design decisions in this recorder are right in line for me, TA4 for power instead of hirose, Icon M+ controller support, 32 Channels in a 688 form factor, redundant networking.  Well done Sound Devices.

I also appreciate SD's humor in their faq's.
