Matthias Richter
this is totally off the sound-book but: I want to give a present to a UK family. My German family loves a game called „Scotland Yard“. Is this known amongst UK families or will it be (hopefully) a surprise?
The Immoral Mr Teas
ePli Totally new to me Matthais, though I am of the Rubics Gen for new games (... or Jet Set Willy anyone?) Looks pretty good and you could be on to a winner if it’s indeed an ‘England from Afar’ affair (like Harry Dickson..?) But hang around for a few more replies
Alien
Yes played many an hour on this game with children, parents and Grand parents. Will go down well as its also not all that well known unlike smoother games.
Matthias Richter
thanks! There is a new version available now. You can play it old school just like 40 years ago or the advanced version with an app on your phone. I think I‘ll give it a try. Cheers, Matthias
The Immoral Mr Teas
I’m slightly upset if it is an English game translated into German - I was hoping it was a German game on an English theme! Oddly enough I have an English family who enjoy playing German games ... the German version might be a decent next Christmas present! Feel free to recommend any other German games Matthais ... Matthias Richter
It’s a very old German game. The company „Ravensburger“ is a traditional German games company with loads of classics. The British company Milton Bradley came out with a UK version some years later - did check it on Wikipedia 😉 You looking for family / kids game? The Immoral Mr Teas
Well they’re all in their twenties now Matthais but that shouldn’t spoil the fun over Christmas! So something for 20-80+ ...? I think I’ll give Scotland Yard a go for them in the original German. Cheers, J
Matthias Richter
the new version just adds the app. But you can also play without it. For the nostalgic touch there is also the 40years anniversary edition. Really old school 😉 If your family does speak a little German (or wants to learn) there is another favorite of my childhood (still available on A…) called „Hase und Igel“. It looks really cute but you can get clever and strategic if you must win!
Matthew Steel
We still play our vintage USA version of Scotland Yard from about 40 years ago. The rules would need translated of course, but the game itself doesn't rely on language at all. It looks like the German version even keeps the British ticket type names so I expect the board is identical.
