Breaking into the business... How can I get my feet wet?
Alex T posted a topic in General DiscussionHey guys, Newbie here. I am a non pro that got into sound because a friend wasn’t technical at all. I work I’m IT, so love anything technical/electrical and jumped at the opportunity to learn/do something new. Fast forward almost a year later, and I have a modest little sound kit and am hooked! So here’s my question. How would I go about getting some real world experience and maybe actually making a few $$$ in the process? I have zero set/pro experience and am dying to get my feet wet. Any suggestions will be much appreciated!!!

Tips for getting into Travel Shows
JWlt posted a topic in General DiscussionHi all, Just wondering if anybody on here had any experience with travel type shows, e.g. Parts Unknown, Nat Geo sort of stuff, and how one might go about getting on those crews? I'm relatively new, but have always wanted to work on travel shows and was just wondering if anybody could recommend some proactive steps I could take to work my way there eventually. Thanks! Josh
The industry in London
DillonBochon posted a topic in General DiscussionHi to all the folks on JWSound. I'm a Vancouver based mixer still in my entry stages, and I'm making a trip out to London at the end of April. For my personal experience and to help me experience the sound department in many different ways, I'd love to meet a mixer from there. I'd love to get together for a beer or coffee. However, I'd really like to see how you run your sets in Europe. Feel free to contact me over this forum, or at DillonBochon@hotmail.com. PS: The drinks are on me!
Beginning a Career ...
mrcndrpqn posted a topic in General DiscussionHello everyone, I had originally posted this on the RAMPS google group, and was advised that I might get more feedback if I posted here. This is my first post at jwsound. I'm a former AV tech looking to transition into the world of location recording. I'm looking to volunteer, or job shadow, a location recordist to gain a bit of practical experience. I'm based in Toronto, Canada. I always show up on time, work hard, stay out of the way, and don't whine about assigned tasks. If anyone knows of opportunities for me, or if anyone has any advice for me, please reply. I will appreciate any information, and don't be afraid to be frank. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Sincerely, Marc-André Paquin
