Bondelev
Has anyone used either this camera or these wireless mikes? We ran a test today with this combo. Levels into and out of the camera appeared good, but the levels into the headset were inaudible. Some Internet searching showed some potential problems with this camera, including not only low levels but loss of low end, but they weren’t necessarily from respectable sources. I’d love to hear if anyone here had any experiences with this setup. Thanks,
PTA
I have worked with the V1U and have heard similar complaints about the low end of the audio spectrum being absent, almost as if there was a permanent high pass filter built into the camera. When I actually got to work with the camera hands on, I didn't notice a significant loss in the low end of the spectrum, at least not to what people were describing. The only thing that I can guess is that either the people that originally made these claims were way off in what they were saying, or that Sony realized they had made a big mistake on the audio side of the camera and fixed it in the batches of cameras that they sent out after the original batch. That being said, everything was being run through a mixer at line level out and not directly to camera from the Sennheisers. But I must say, Sennheisers are rough after you have worked with Lectros. My end experience with this camera worked out fine though. I hope that helps.
studiomprd
some camcorders have a wind reduction setting that is actually a hi-pass filter (aka lo-cut)...
PTA
some camcorders have a wind reduction setting that is actually a hi-pass filter (aka lo-cut)... True, I believe this camera does have wind reduction filters too. But those who have noticed issues claim the absence of low end even when the filters are deactivated. Again, I didn't notice it when I worked with the V1U, but that was just my experience.
Bondelev
Thanks for the input. We're going to run another test tomorrow.
John Blankenship
I don't recall if I've worked with the HVR-V1U, but I haven't noticed it with the Z1U. However, with a past Sony model used on a Discovery gig -- to be specific, the PD170 -- each of the four cameras sounded different. John B. Philip Perkins
On all those Sony HDV etc dinky-cams: make sure the wind filter, the AGC and any NR features are OFF OFF OFF all the time. Philip Perkins

Agreed. Automatic dinky-cam features are the bane of our existence. John B.
