  1. 50 rounds, err um, AA's or AAA's worth of storage for $5 bucks.  I put a little foam on the lid underneath as AA's/AAA's are a tiny bit shorter than ammo so they would go up and down if rattled in the case but used something like this for the last 10 years with no issues.  Also almost exactly the size of my 150wh V-Mount backup battery that I keep in a pelican case so I stack them on top of each other nicely in the pelican in a divided slot.

  2. These are the official rules but just keep your transmitters no higher than 50mW and I recall the 2x I was there (years ago) that I was using block 24 and 21 at the time and didn't have any issues.  I'm sure things have changed in the last 10 years though so YMMV.

Is 35 watts enough, or are these semi-immune to RFI or something?

HAM radio in your pocket!  But yes, it seems the digital vs analog transmission mW is different in the sense that digital seems to do way better with less power.

  4. Seems like a great piece of kit per usual with Lectro.  That being said, at $2449 USD and no remote capability (that we know of other than dweedle tones), starting to really pale in comparison to the competition at this price point.

    Funny story.

I am renting gear for a long show.

Production asked me and the grip company “ who are also just renting” to provide our own production insurance and to free them of liability if somebody gets hurt.

I'd tell them to pound sand then.  What's next, you need to pay them for the catering too?  If production doesn't want liability, then they shouldn't be creating a production.

  6. I'd get a quote from Sonosax directly on what a look over / refresh would go for and then negotiate the sale of the unit accordingly knowing what it would take to get it up to par.  Sonosax analog boards are like the Bugatti of the sound world.  You wouldn't just take it down to Crazy Eddy's Car Repair for repair or a look over as they are truly something special.

    Hi all.
As an Aaton user, without knowing what will happen to service repair facilities

I'd imagine that, once the dust clears, someone would probably be able to fix small problems?  Hell, you can still get your Nagra repaired back to factory spec so I'd hope you'd be able to be able to fix a machine that literally existed up until this year!

  8. I'd be down for an app like this, especially if you could control multiple machines.  I currently have one 788t but am contemplating picking up a second as I've created a workflow with a 2nd unit summing through the link port of my Solice and it's sounding great.  These things are workhorses and the only real negative things about them is that you do have to dig through the rotary menu vs a modern app that could speed things like metadata up.

Larry, can I ask why Lectro doesn't make IFBR1B with a switch to make it line-level and bypass the headphone jack? IFBR1b has to be the smallest transmitter on the market. I know a lot of cam ops would be happy about that.

I'm beating a dead horse at this point but you could just use any of the Sennheiser G3/G4 receivers, turn off the pilot tone on them and voila, they pick up the Lectro IFB signal.  Been using them for camera hops for years with the great reliability of the Lectro transmission (+ R1a's for video village etc picking up the same signal).

    introduce some connectivity update

Honestly if they just made an F16n, maybe threw some AES inputs on it and called it a day, that would be fine too.

I'd love a small, 5 channel mixer recorder with phantom and a great mic pre on channel 1, then a super slot for a 4 channel receiver built in as boom + 4 lavs would cover most of my use cases.

Or it could be a proper true replacement to the Sound Device 970 that is no longer made?

It's a bummer they discontinued that recorder.  They rarely pop up on the used market too and when they do, sell for some pretty big coin quickly.  That new Yamaha DC powered dante board into one would be great for high track count stuff into one of those (although it seems people are using that Yamaha's USB into a laptop with Boom Recorder too).

BlackMagic have a penchant for buy left overs from closed businesses and open them for the masses.

And they are quite empty on the dedicated audio recorder area.

Might be a good candidate.  What the market needs is something to fill the big price vacuum between a Zoom F8N and an 833.

  13. Denecke full size slates + JB-1's are my go to for timecode.  They just work and I don't have to fuss with my phone/tablet/whatever as they just jam and work.  Don't forget the resell value also as I often see well used Denecke slates selling quickly for not much less than they were purchased new.

At the end of the day, timecode is just an accurate clock.  No need to make a clock complicated.

Now that sadly the Zoom F Control is also discontinued (so you'd also have to have the hassle of source a secondhand one and/or old forgotten retail stock somewhere in the world), this Tascam recorder / control surface deal could be a good solid alternative to get.

Sold my HS-P82 and matching control surface for $1000 cash USD a year or two ago.  They're odd beasts with some quirks but they sound great.  Served me well but I spun that around into a great Sound Devices 788t deal (with Cl-8) and now I'm kinda bullish on getting another 788t to C-Link as I can use my PSC Solice Mini + a 788t with CL-8 summed into the "link" port to make a very analog yet capable 16 channel setup.

I've used a thumb track ball before, but I didn't like it.

I'm the same way.  I've had my Orbit forever and love it.  The scroll wheel is fantastic and when I'm in Pro Tools, holding shift + the scroll wheel makes horizontal scrolling a breeze in a session.  I even converted my wife to an Orbit which she loves for her crazy huge Excel spreadsheets and managing those.

Kensington Orbit TrackBall, Kabelgebundene ergonomische TrackBall-Maus ...

  16. Sounds silly but have you tried physically cleaning the trackball?  I have the Kensington Orbit and once in a wall it gets "sticky" and doesn't operate as smoothly till I take the trackball out and clean everything inside.

  17. I have the mini but here's what I do.

    788t

    T1 Mono Mix

    T2 Boom

    T3-T8 Lavs

    Mini

    C1 Boom

C2 Return Mix In (more on this in a minute)

    C3-8 Lavs

    633

    C1-6 More lavs if needed

So I use the 2nd channel on my mini with the fader always up and my 633 linked to my 788t (via timecode so it autorecords when I record on the 788t).  I use the faders on the 633 to create a mono mix (and record ISO's on the 633 itself) and pipe that mono mix into the C2 of the mini so that it lands on top of the mono mix on T1 of the 788t.  With all this, I can have a Mix + Boom + 12 Lavs.  With how 788t's are getting cheaper and cheaper, I'll probably plunk down a little dough and get another one so I can just C-Link it all.

Also, most importantly, sounds great even in today's digital world!

  18. I'd argue that most repair costs today are by far labor costs.  I'd doubt anywhere would charge less than $100/hour for labor these days alone so even if it was a $20 screen that broke (guestimating), I couldn't see it being economical to ship --> fix (labor + parts) --> ship back.
