fisher in greenbeds

The booms below are mounted on something called Boom Track, developed by Bruce Arledge, a Hollywood sound mixer.  With his system, the arm is mounted on a "truck" with wheels that allow it to move left and right... though definitely not enough to do the whole show with just a couple of booms, hence the lineup of arms you see in the photo, with as many as 12 or 14 arms mounted up there .  Without Boom Track, the booms will usually be mounted on a catwalk stand, which is provided by Fisher and shown in the 2nd photo below and is mounted by nailing the stand to the greenbed floor and to a wooden rail a couple feet off the floor.  You can see that rail in the Boom Track photo.  The catwalk stands are obviously fixed in position... you guess where you want them before production begins and have the grips install them and then hope you guessed right.  When the Electricians install a new lamp that's suddenly in your way or the director picks a new spot on the set to place the actors where you've never been prepared to work before, you might end up wishing you had the Boom Track.  Note that in the image with Boom Track, that's a double-wide greenbed... the kind you want, but don't always get.
