  1. The very first time I saw the Deva IV/V I was working at Coffey, but it was the first NAB where Zaxcom was showing them, and because at the time we were the only dealers west of the Mississippi that carried Zaxcom, I was helping to work their booth. I literally showed up the morning of the first day, got about a 10 minute demo on the devas from Howy, and then I turned around and was demoing it to others right away. It's super easy to use, there's just a lot to it. As a matter of fact, I don't think I ever read the manual for it.
  2. I'm glad Mirror remembers this, because it's been over a decade since I've had to do it, or rattle off how to do it from memory. If I had a Deva V in front of me I'm sure it'd all come back to me, though.
  3. If you want to easily change a cable on a K-Tek pole then get the Stage Poles. They have a removable head piece so you can drop whatever cable you want down in there. Super fast and easy. That being said, I'm not a fan of doing this if I want to switch between mono and stereo recording. I'd just have a pole with a mono cable and another with a stereo cable...and then maybe one without cable. This is how I used to work when I was doing a bunch of sound effects recording. The type of job dictated what kind of pole and cabling I'd need.
  4. Here's a video on advanced USB interface functionality:
  5. It's worth getting that Firewire fixed, even though it's Firewire 400. That's what I ended up using to turn in files at the end of the day. I was doing mocap dialogue for video games, and when I said I was going to turn in dvd-ram disks they looked at me like I had two heads. I said I could also transfer to a firewire drive, and they liked that. I mirrored to that all day, and only had to wait a minute or two after the last take for the Deva to finish. There was wifi right there on the MoCap stage, so I just plugged the firewire drive into my computer and uploaded the files directly to the client. Before I left the files were in 3 places; the Deva, my external firewire hard drive, and the client's server.
  6. I need to change that. I meant to say you can't use them at the same time to inputs 5 and 6 as audio inputs.
  7. If you could get a motor in there for the dualies and then be able to remote control it....
  8. Sound Devices has announced a new firmware update for the new MixPre recorders. You can get it here: https://www.sounddevices.com/support/downloads/mixpres-firmware To install the update, please first format the card in the MixPre by going to Menu > SD Card > Edit > Format. Then load the .prg file to the card, and go to Menu > System > Update Firmware. It should take about a minute to reboot.
  9. I'm working on a series of videos for these new recorders. Rather than have one big long video I'm breaking it down into separate videos that cover specific topics. This is the first intro video. I'm working on one right now that talks about power solutions. Go ahead and subscribe if you want to get notified when I release more of these. There's other stuff on my channel as well.
  10. I did very briefly touch on why one would use Poly or Mono, but didn't get deep into the weeds on it as the length was getting a little long, and I really just wanted to focus on the difference between the two. That being said, it is probably a good idea for me to do a follow up on why one would use Mono over Poly, or vice versa.
  11. From the VO world, there is a doc called "I know That Voice" that was produced by John Di Maggio. I was lucky to work with many of the people in this trailer, and it's a great look into the VO world for animation and video games (the world I lived in for a while). A lot of these people did video games as well.
  12. can't believe I didn't think to say that. I may do a follow up video on situations where you would want one over the other and actually get into specifics like this.
  13. I know most of the active participators here know the difference between broadcast wave polyphonic files and broadcast wave monophonic files, but part of my new gig is customer education, and I still get asked all the time about the difference between these two. One day, when I was taking my son to archery practice, I tossed him my phone and said "I'm going to shoot a video, ask me about BWF.P vs. BMW.M", and so we did. This is the non-fancy uber low budget result. I mainly did this so when people ask I can just give them this link. Not only is it about the differences between the two types, but why you might use one over the other.
  14. PSC didn't do a booth at NAB this year.
  15. Got some hands on time with this, Crew, and it sounds great. Karl spent some quality time with me showing me this new system, and it's really slick. It's pretty powerful, and I can see uses for it in different areas as well. I wish I would have had this system back in the day when I was a monitor mixer.
  16. If I had all the money in the world I'd resurrect "Crazy Eddie's" and do the commercials just like the old days. It'd make a splash.
  17. Here are the dimensions: MixPre-66.53” x 4.65” x 1.40” (166mm x 118mm x 36mm)19.9 oz (.56 kg)MixPre-35.68” x 4.35” x 1.40” (144mm x 110mm x 36mm)16.8 oz (.48 kg) I'm taking pre-orders now. I'm also looking into appropriate bag options.
  18. Wow...I remember those from when I was a kid. Didn't he/they get in some legal trouble? As far as my first gear. It was a pair of Oktava MC-012 microphones that were on consignment when I was working at Coffey Sound along with a pair of PSC universal shock mounts, a mic stand (which I'm still using right now), a stereo bar, and raw cable and connectors to make my own XLR cable. I used them for sound effects and Foley recording. Shortly after that I purchased a Pro Tools LE rig and freelanced post work from my apartment. When I was freelance most of my work was post/video game sound, so I didn't have a need to purchase production equipment, and the production gigs I did get were so varied, I needed a different list of gear each time. Sometimes I'd need a Deva V. Other times just a 744t. I just ended up renting what I needed.
