Here's the view from my position last night for a multicam doco shoot of a performance by Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser at a venue in Santa Cruz CA. Great show, crowd went nuts during the encore. The producer had wanted me to cover both doco/verite audio and music recording for the all-day shoot, but she not only listened to my concerns about that and hired a 2nd sound person (Ray Day) to do the doco stuff, she rented good cameras (HDX900), Lockits for all and let me roll my multitrack rig and deliver as files, with the cameras free and untethered to anything. Really nice change from either miles of audio/genlock/TC/video cabling or dinky-cams that can only be appro…

Buenos Noches Ernesto. Welcome to jwsound. What a resume you have. In Hollywood we are put in boxes and get to do one thing only. Others here @jw do like you and wear many hats. We are a vast community here. I congratulate you on getting Walter Murch to visit your school. He is the man. I try to get many to read his books and articles. Don't worry about your english skills, most all of us need to improve. Thanks for introducing yourself to the group. CrewC

Sitting under a pop up today, in the pouring rain at Warner Ranch when a message from Christian Holm popped up on my email with a good idea, or so I thought. He asked me to start this because he feels his command of the english is a bit weak. He probably asked the wrong guy to do this as my english is dodgy at best. But... The idea is like "Who I am today", but discussing the music in your life as a window to ones personality and how it influenced you in any way shape or form. I hope I am expressing his idea right. Why not, seems fun enough for a rainy day in Hollywood. Music has always been a main ingredient and love in my life. My father loved the big bands and swin…

I found an interesting. (to me) video today at boingboing that I thought I would share and didn't know where to post it so I thought I would start WTF as a place to post the random, weird, and off subjects that we find interesting. This is an old clip from 63 Steve Allen Show with Frank Zappa playing the bicycle. http://afacemeltingblogofstaggeringriffage.blogspot.com/2009/06/frank-zappa-plays-bicycle-on-steve.html Enjoy or not. This may well be an old timer thing. CrewC

From the website of a Northern California public broadcaster: === Many Freelancers Don't Get Paid on Time. This California Bill Aims to Fix That One of photographer Amanda Hibbert’s clients never paid her for a completed job. Writer Elizabeth Aaron once waited nearly two years for full payment. They are among the hundreds of thousands of freelancers in California with little recourse to fix a recurring problem: late — or no — compensation for their work. A state bill would change that by offering graphic designers, artists, videographers and other professional freelance workers some of the protections that payroll employees command…

Since people die everyday in the course of life and many of us feel compelled to comment on those who have passed, I thought a thread/topic to cover this might be useful to the group. RVD mentioned the group of 3 concept of famous folks dying in 3's and so it seems true again as Dennis Hopper is about to ride off to the other side. What a career. A fiction writer couldn't make up the life of Mr Hopper. Well done Dennis. RIP CrewC

I also will be attending some of the CST conferences (especially the one with re-recording mixer Cyril Holtz.) Regards Fred

I haven't managed to thank everyone personally but the last few days have seen an amazing amount of support donations from our members. Maybe my birthday, April 18th, triggered this, I don't know, but it is so appreciated! We have such a great group of sound people here who participate regularly on site and so many of our veteran members have generously offered so much good advice and help to many of our newer members. It is amazing that we can keep this all going considering how much "competition" there is from so many social media websites. I am aware that the legacy forum format is showing its age a bit but it seems to be still working quite well. So pleased that there…

Hi all, I think it's a good idea to have one place for all news coming from NAB, including live streaming links, interesting products outside from production sound world etc. Looking forward to see what NAB has to show us this year. There will the famous party, right? Thank you, Vasileios

I was saddened to hear that John Coffey passed away recently. I’m sure that others who knew him better than I will have already heard this news, but I thought this sound community should know of his passing. His “ little shop that could “ up on Cahuenga here in LA was my first introduction to professional location sound equipment. He would let you walk out of there with thousands of dollars of gear on just a handshake. John would give you his home phone number in case you needed anything after hours or on weekends. Crazy way to run a business, but he made me a loyal customer up until the day he sold the place to Glen Trew. Here’s hoping you’re at peace, John. …

I was walking out of Cosco today as the earthquake struck. Fullerton is about 10 miles southwest of the epicenter so it was stronger than many I have experienced, but not that much more. Not like the big ones. I told my wife, the long suffering Mrs Chamberlain, 5.5.... I can't count how many I have been in at this point in time, but I enjoy how people react. They reach out to those who just went thru it and want to share. Not the norm in So Cal... Got me thinking about earthquakes. I have seem many film clips of earthquakes, but I have never heard a recording of one. I imagine one exists, but I have never heard one. If any one knows of a good clip and wants to share …

Being out of the loop so to speak, is anyone on the forum working right now? I am curious about those 40 or so (?) "Independently Produced" projects that SAG/AFTRA and WGA have let continue on during the strike, along with IATSE notice that it was "legal" for members to not cross the picket lines. How about in locales other that the USA? What's up in the real world? Inquiring minds want to know. D.

That Tremolux must have sounded great! And a 2X12 Bassman would be cool! What ever you do, don't click this link: https://reverb.com/marketplace?query=Bassman 2x12 Instead, buy local. Have you (or any of you) checked out Milkman Sound in San Francisco? Not Fender clones, but Fender inspired. https://milkmansound.com
