Here's the view from my position last night for a multicam doco shoot of a performance by Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser at a venue in Santa Cruz CA. Great show, crowd went nuts during the encore. The producer had wanted me to cover both doco/verite audio and music recording for the all-day shoot, but she not only listened to my concerns about that and hired a 2nd sound person (Ray Day) to do the doco stuff, she rented good cameras (HDX900), Lockits for all and let me roll my multitrack rig and deliver as files, with the cameras free and untethered to anything. Really nice change from either miles of audio/genlock/TC/video cabling or dinky-cams that can only be appro…

Buenos Noches Ernesto. Welcome to jwsound. What a resume you have. In Hollywood we are put in boxes and get to do one thing only. Others here @jw do like you and wear many hats. We are a vast community here. I congratulate you on getting Walter Murch to visit your school. He is the man. I try to get many to read his books and articles. Don't worry about your english skills, most all of us need to improve. Thanks for introducing yourself to the group. CrewC

Sitting under a pop up today, in the pouring rain at Warner Ranch when a message from Christian Holm popped up on my email with a good idea, or so I thought. He asked me to start this because he feels his command of the english is a bit weak. He probably asked the wrong guy to do this as my english is dodgy at best. But... The idea is like "Who I am today", but discussing the music in your life as a window to ones personality and how it influenced you in any way shape or form. I hope I am expressing his idea right. Why not, seems fun enough for a rainy day in Hollywood. Music has always been a main ingredient and love in my life. My father loved the big bands and swin…

I found an interesting. (to me) video today at boingboing that I thought I would share and didn't know where to post it so I thought I would start WTF as a place to post the random, weird, and off subjects that we find interesting. This is an old clip from 63 Steve Allen Show with Frank Zappa playing the bicycle. http://afacemeltingblogofstaggeringriffage.blogspot.com/2009/06/frank-zappa-plays-bicycle-on-steve.html Enjoy or not. This may well be an old timer thing. CrewC

Since people die everyday in the course of life and many of us feel compelled to comment on those who have passed, I thought a thread/topic to cover this might be useful to the group. RVD mentioned the group of 3 concept of famous folks dying in 3's and so it seems true again as Dennis Hopper is about to ride off to the other side. What a career. A fiction writer couldn't make up the life of Mr Hopper. Well done Dennis. RIP CrewC

That's business. But still sad. Rycote: Small factory behind big TV shows closes down A small factory in Gloucestershire that pioneered sound recording technology for the film and TV industry has been closed, with the loss of 22 jobs. For over 50 years, Rycote in Stroud made windshields for microphones used all over the world. But its parent company said the factory was "no longer fit for purpose". Production has been moved to Leicestershire. Rest of the story, with a few pictures here: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-gloucestershire-65687450

Amazon introduces new feature to make dialogue in its TV shows intelligible It's an accessibility feature, sure, but muddled audio is a problem for everyone. SAMUEL AXON - 4/20/2023, 2:54 PM Amazon has introduced a new feature to Prime Video called Dialogue Boost. It's intended to isolate dialogue and make it louder relative to other sounds in streaming videos on the service. I feel blessed to have worked on a movie that has become my favorite of all time --- this scene specifically, my favorite sing-along scene that I have ever done. Thank you Cameron Crowe for the joy of working with you.

I just finished playing drums by myself, which is not as much fun as playing music with others, but more fun than not playing at all. Last week I was working with Gary Gossett who is a drummer as well. Hunter Crowley is also a drummer. Just wondering how many other sound folks played drums? I know some play other instruments, like Mick Fowler, he plays keyboards and I am sure others play or did play guitar and bass. Did doing so figure into your ending up in sound? If so then how much? Myself, I see it all related to my growing up in Orange County in the 50's n 60's when garage bands were a huge fad like hot rods and surfing. We were in tune with it all and the music of t…

Just curious. I play an AV65 jazzmaster & a 2003 AVRI jaguar through both a ‘62 and a ‘64 Showman (with D130fs of course) and a ‘63 reverb tank. (I’ve also got a ‘62 Twin but no place to really use it at the moment haha!) I love spring reverb and surf. My mom grew up in the Bronx and was 19 in 1960 when surf started in Southern CA, and she never heard surf on the radio! So sad. I grew up in Hawaii (mid 70s - 80s) and also never heard surf on the radio. Lots of you are in Southern CA and I am super jealous! They just had a three day surf festival around LA this past weekend. I’d say surf is a style more than a genre, because let’s face it…

That Tremolux must have sounded great! And a 2X12 Bassman would be cool! What ever you do, don't click this link: https://reverb.com/marketplace?query=Bassman 2x12 Instead, buy local. Have you (or any of you) checked out Milkman Sound in San Francisco? Not Fender clones, but Fender inspired. https://milkmansound.com

New Concert Hall opened in my town, after ten years construction time and the cost of 800 million Euros which is about 11 times more than firstly calculated. The whole hall is based on 362 steel springs, like a boom mike. Best sound on every single of 2100 seats, planned by sound specialist Yasuhisa Toyota. Special surfaces on the walls create and eliminate wanted und unwanted sound reflections. There is a giant 15 meter reflector hanging from the ceiling, mechanically isolated from the hall. No seat is more than 30 meters away from the conductor. Seats are coated with special sound fabrics. Yasuhisa Toyota made a 10:1 model before construction to examine acoustics. …

I was talking with a friend about how hard it might be to restore a Wurlitzer electric piano, as one does, and that led to a chain of thoughts that led to a Google search that brought up this blast from the past. From Re/p, Sept 1970 (on that site Al McGuire discovered). https://worldradiohistory.com/Archive-All-Audio/Archive-Recording-Engineer/70s/Recording-1970-09.pdf Because of this mic and the tape recorder mod, Brad Miller sent Carl each Original Master Recording LP as they were released. I just dig that sort of thing...
