VASI Posted March 8, 2013 Report Posted March 8, 2013 Wow wow wow. I go to sleep and the next day all this. Vas, dude, come on, you wanted to play didn't you? If you act like you know it all (and better than everybody else) and can't deal with being wrong then I'm sorry to say you're a bad loser. My advice: be humble, watch and learn from others. Reading a lot is good but it doesn't replace proper experience. Now I just wish you hadn't watered down this otherwise excellent discussion with your worked up posts. I'll accept your apology above for offending me without reason. And don't worry, this was my last statement to this matter. My apology it's for you. The life is keep running. Let's see and watch future projects.
HenZ Posted March 15, 2013 Report Posted March 15, 2013 Hello everybody, today we've just released the Mermonte Take Away Show which is the first TAS where i am also the executive producer. I hope you like it. There's also an article giving the context and the story behind and around the event. But basically, this was shot on the 20th of december 2012 and the idea is that Mermonte prevented the end of the world with this performance. At least, that's what i believe. I'm pretty sure you guys will spot the microphones this time
Francois Clos Posted March 16, 2013 Report Posted March 16, 2013 hey Ben, I haven't seen those for sure, sounds good stuff !! I'll try to have a clue on what happened to those films (if I find enough time for that...)
koukouvani Posted June 24, 2013 Report Posted June 24, 2013 MY hat is off to the sound recordists of Blogotheque. They are doing an unbelievable job, as has been already noted. i was watching the Kodaline takeaway, where they get out of the van at the start, and thinking "this is really impossible. There must be some trickery." How did they get such a clear vocal sound and low background sound, whilst maintaining the phase integrity during the moving bits, and how did they get the singer in the van not to sound noticeably different when they came out of the van ? was the van massively damped inside or is it just an ordinary van? maybe they hired it off the cia.. are the lav's cardi's? are the schoeps mic's shotguns? or ordinary cardioids? can you do ORTF with shotguns? p.s blogotheque is also a great format overall (That's enough brownnosing. Ed.) thanks to the persons of Blogotheque for sharing their knowledge, btw.
HenZ Posted June 24, 2013 Report Posted June 24, 2013 Hello Koukouvani, I am the one who did the Kodaline Take Away Show. It's funny because that van thing was just something i did for fun. Colin (the director) had the silly idea of having them start in there so i proposed to get in the van just for the kicks, hoping something interesting would come out of it. It's just a regular van, probably one of those of the market workers. Nothing special: a big empty trunk with metal walls and a wooden floor. All i had to make sure was not to be in the frame (so wait for the singer to move the camera away from the van). On that session i was lucky to have 2 more lavs and a proper stereo mic (we usually have an ORTF made out of 2 oktava cardio mics). So one schoeps ORTF mic on the boom, 1 lav in the guitar, 1 lav on the guitar player, 1 lav on the singer and 1 shitty lav on the bass player singing harmonies too. If you listen carefully, the sound inside the van is mostly the sound of the stereo boom actually. What's interesting on this session is how the guitar sound was mixed if you ask me. It's the first time i try something like that. Let me know if you notice anything about it. Now to answer your questions quickly: - lavs are sanken cos 11. - schoeps mic is ortf (so 2 cardio mics). - an ORTF, by definition, is only 2 cardio mics with an angle of 110° and a space of 17 cm (correct me if i'm wrong). It tries to imitate a head i believe. So no shotguns in a ORTF stereo mic. - BUT you can try and do some weird stereo micing with shotguns (i heard of stereo MS with a shotgun instead of a cardio for the M. Not sure of what they got). But then, again, i don't understand why people are so obsessed with shotgun mics. Especially on a film like this. We mix cinema and music recording technics. We get the close up sound with wireless mics, so we don't need a shotgun for that. We are more looking for an ambient sound with the boom to get some natural reverb (that's what i did for the Kodaline - Perfect World one) or interesting surrounding sounds meaningful for the film/song. Thank you very much for your feedback. It's always nice to hear about people who notice your work. We spend a lot of time (with what we have!) to try and make those mix sound as good as we can considering the conditions and rig we have. Cheers!
HenZ Posted June 24, 2013 Report Posted June 24, 2013 Oh, by the way, i don't want to look like we're boasting around here or anything, but perhaps some of you will find something interesting in these couple videos. Early june we went to Porto to record some artists during the Optimus Primavera Sound Festival Porto and some journalists came to film us working. Here's a short film from P3: http://p3.publico.pt/cultura/mp3/8128/filmamos-la-blogotheque-filmar-daniel-johnston And some local news came to interview us during the shooting we did with Local Natives. Hugo (one of our directors) answered a couple questions. If you find this enticing, click this link: http://sicnoticias.sapo.pt/2205433 CHeers!
HenZ Posted June 28, 2013 Report Posted June 28, 2013 Hey, no problem: your french seems fine. Thanks. There was nothing crazy fancy on the guitar. It's just that when mixing these we often have too much going on in the center. Since i had a mic on the guitar and another on the guitarist picking up a lot of guitar (as much than the guitarist's backing vocals), i decidef to pan one of the mics one side and the other mic on the opposite side, giving a "stereo" take of the guitar, still hearing it in the middle. Just to try something different. I'm glad noone noticed! (or else it would mean it's a bad idea i guess).
ianreynolds1 Posted August 3, 2013 Report Posted August 3, 2013 With this being more traditional music video-y, how would they do the sound on this one? Just the traditional FOH mixer type set-up, and record from there?
mikewest Posted August 4, 2013 Report Posted August 4, 2013 The best live results I've heard are the Music In High Places Vol 1 India Arie Some interesting setup footage too. Sound mixer using a mixer into a Deva multiple radio mikes plus 2 x AKG 414ULS mikes as a rear stereo element. Great music and astounding results! mike
Manx Posted August 19, 2013 Report Posted August 19, 2013 Hey everybody, brilliant videos and amazing sound work. I'm working on a similar show here in Lebanon, it's called Beirut Jam Sessions. Here's one of the videos we did. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0WjLLUu1M8
HenZ Posted September 16, 2013 Report Posted September 16, 2013 With this being more traditional music video-y, how would they do the sound on this one? Just the traditional FOH mixer type set-up, and record from there? Hello, I've asked JB Aubonnet about this one since he is the audio director on the Empty Spaces series. Apparently it's a mix of FOH mixer and preamps. He uses the FOH the make the sound in the area because he has ambient mics around the place and wants to record the global ambient sound of the whole band. The mics are also routed to preamps going into a ProTools. Sometimes the FOH mixer has its preamps used for the recording as well. It depends on the band, what he can get for the area and the backline the band brings along. I know that in the Franz Ferdinand one they were able to do a couple impulse reponses and sweeps of the area in order to use them for the mix with an altiverb. You can really hear it on the snare at some point and it's pretty cool: sounds huge and real at the same time. But the Suuns one is definitely one of our favourite. The best live results I've heard are the Music In High Places Vol 1 India Arie Some interesting setup footage too. Sound mixer using a mixer into a Deva multiple radio mikes plus 2 x AKG 414ULS mikes as a rear stereo element. Great music and astounding results! mike I'll have to check that out! Sound interesting. Hey everybody, brilliant videos and amazing sound work. I'm working on a similar show here in Lebanon, it's called Beirut Jam Sessions. Here's one of the videos we did. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0WjLLUu1M8 Oh great! Nice stuff! If I ever come to Beirut, it would be nice to see a session. I have some very good musician friends who have been there lately and apparently the live music scene is incredible. Keep on spreading the music, love and creativity! (oh god i sound so cheesy!)
ianreynolds1 Posted September 17, 2013 Report Posted September 17, 2013 Thank you for the updated info
Christian Spaeth Posted November 1, 2013 Author Report Posted November 1, 2013 Oh sweet lord I love the sound of a well built church!
HenZ Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Awww man, that church would have sounded so much better if my 2nd mic (for the stereo boom mic) wasn't broke down at the time! (therefor, only had a mono boom mic). This was the first song, only take. We did another song and i was able to throw a stereo-h4 a couple meters behind me. The second song didn't make the cut though. It's a shame. We also shot more songs and an improvisation on the roof of the church, with the cold wintery parisian streets under us. Damn it was intense. Ahhh... Too bad editors can be lazy or lack time. Thanks for putting this up!
HenZ Posted February 17, 2015 Report Posted February 17, 2015 Haha! Yeah! I didn't work on this one. But apparently they had quite some issues with the drone. This time the camera was quite heavy and the drone had to be a big heavy one. Also, if you get a chance, I would be super happy if you could give a look at this one. There's even a song where i had to deal with more than 25 musicians! Cheers!
CrisDLC Posted January 5, 2023 Report Posted January 5, 2023 On 3/7/2013 at 8:01 PM, Francois Clos said: The acoustic guitar is either miked inside with a countryman I just love find this topic! Blogotheque have always been a really big inspo to me, to the point of creating my own channel about music through Latin America (https://www.youtube.com/@SesionesdelaCuadra) the difference is that im not a specialist in field recording or cinema, but i really try it. When you say "guitar is either miked inside" where you put the transmisor? also inside? 😮 I really want to say thank you all for that guys! and i really appreciate the info that you shared here. (sorry my english, i'm from Chile) I will share two videos from the channel, The first, just had one lav mic, the guitar line and a zoom stereo recorder and other one where were 13 musicians in a park, two lav mics, guitar line, and a zoom stereo recorder, i hope you like it
