old school Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 I didn't know where to post this so I started a new topic. Film/TV/Book?Music reviews from group members. Hop in if so inclined. I really enjoyed "The Kids Are All Right" for many reasons, but mostly I liked the story. This film was a recognizable slice of LA/SoCal life. I don't see many of these. The director, Lisa Cholodenko, is a major talent in the old 70's ideal of a director and their subject matter and story. Her films remind me of Hal Ashby. Not sure many saw "Laurel Canyon" by her, but well made and worth a viewing IMO. The Acting, Camera, Art Direction, and Sound on "Kids" were outstanding in a very serving way to the story, but were invisible and drew zero attention to the process. Igor, the Cameraman is a talent and fun to work with. I don't know Jose Antonio Garcia or his crew but the film sounded real. Very old school story telling that let the audience do the work. It is not the feel good family comedy that the trailer depicts, but worth the time as a well crafted drama if that's your thing. Next up for me, "Inception". Then I might try "Salt" by other recommends. CrewC Quote
Marc Wielage Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 Yeah, Kids Are All Right was a terrific film. I worked with Igor Jadue-Lillo on that one (in post at Technicolor), and he was a delightful man. He was able to come up with beautiful pictures on a really tight budget and schedule. I was surprised but gratified when this little film became the toast of Sundance awhile back. --Marc W. Quote
RPSharman Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 This was the film I sadly lost to Jose (Tier 1 - only the two of us interviewed). But I have to say, having met Jose on a few occasions, that I find him to be absolutely terrific, and the results speak for themselves. If I were a producer looking at our resumes, knowing they could get us for the same price, and knowing what an outgoing and charming person Jose is, I would likely have made the same decision. Congrats to the filmmakers, and maybe Jose will be back on a big studio film the next time I'm interviewing for a charming little indie like this one. Robert Quote
Marc Wielage Posted August 4, 2010 Report Posted August 4, 2010 Stellar dialog on the dailies -- not a single problem that I can recall. I had a little trouble understanding some of the slates with Jose's accent, though. :-) I'm just glad this film is getting some recognition. I know Igor sweated blood convincing the producers to shoot on film instead of HD, and I think it looks better because of it. My argument was, "you have two actresses 'of a certain age'... they'll definitely look better on film." In a lot of cases, the sharpness and resolution of HD is not our friend. --Marc W. Quote
old school Posted August 18, 2010 Author Report Posted August 18, 2010 I had a wonderful day off and even snuck in a movie n dinner. We/I saw "Flipped" by Rob Reiner'. I have always respected his work, but. Wow. I thought I knew what I was about to see. You know, coming of age period piece, which it was, but I really was surprised by the structure. Only a very talented film maker can make a genre into a fable that works on all the levels. Add into to the mix no "Big Names" and you have pulled off an original story in this day and age. My hat's off to all involved. Bob Eber and his crew did a great job on sound. Reiner has used Bob and many others over the years on all his work and the reason is up there for all to see. I want to see this one again. CrewC Quote
RadoStefanov Posted August 18, 2010 Report Posted August 18, 2010 Last movie I saw on Sunday was Gomorrah - Itally http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0929425/ An amazing drama with a docu feel. Quote
jozzafunk Posted August 31, 2010 Report Posted August 31, 2010 Inception is fantastic, but a bit loud... sit well back if you can. Almost as entertaining is the discussion about what it all means - WARNING SPOILER, maybe - http://chud.com/articles/articles/24477/1/NEVER-WAKE-UP-THE-MEANING-AND-SECRET-OF-INCEPTION/Page1.html Quote
RPSharman Posted August 31, 2010 Report Posted August 31, 2010 I saw "The Other Guys" today. I laughed a lot. Really campy and stupid, like "Talladega Nights", but very funny none-the-less. Quote

I did "High Art" with Lisa here in Brooklyn about 14 years ago...I can't remember if that was her first feature or not, but she is a wonderful person and a really pleasant director to work for. It was a great shoot and I encourage any of you who might have the opportunity to work with her to jump at the chance. Quote
jason porter Posted September 1, 2010 Report Posted September 1, 2010 I finally got to see Scott Pilgrim vs The World. I haven't been THAT entertained for the full length of a feature in a while. Highly recommended! Quote
