  1. OS: " If they did decide to go cheap on those circuits, then I don't know what it saved them, " where did you get the idea that they had ?? "decided to go cheap" ?
  2. RPS: " Just Googled how far Ft. Lauderdale is from Tampa! " it would be worth the trip!
  3. JP: " Like I said, "Patent troll" (they like to call themselves NPEs, but they never made anything) " might another name for them be "inventors" ?? "inventors' agencies" ?? maybe..? there are also companies that inventors send there inventions to and these companies do the patenting and licensing business stuff for them... I'm suggesting that there are a lot of aspects to this stuff, and it doesn't always boil down to "good vs evil"...
  4. DH: " Too late for any JW sound member redesigning I'm sure." it never stops!
  5. sfw: " What's the best way to decouple a boom? " once again, a bit of reading and searching would reveal the previous discussions; not much has changed... any "best" includes a lot of it depends, and subjectivity. " What I meant by "custom" is that Zax seems to be the only product that is made and offered for the specific use of boom operation. " you would also have learned that Zaxcom particularly specializes in the production sound for images market sector, while other manufactures may pay close attention to "our" needs and working situations, none is as focused on "us" as Zaxcom. and my usual answer to JW's question, is that it depends on both the boomer, and the situation.
  6. JP: " 2) part of the patent system (as traditionally intended) is that you have to explain your invention so that nobody else accidentally designs the same thing. " virtually impossible... I refer you to George Harrison about He's so Fine, which he accidentally rewrote as My Sweet Lord... Actually once you are granted patent protection, it is up to the patent holder to protect their IP. that is exactly what is happening in the instant case. I might accidentally design something that someone patented, and unless I get on the radar by manufacturing, advertising displaying and selling it there might never be any issue... I am not obligated to do a patent search for my invention unless I want to patent it.
  7. philip: " Someone will I hope explain... how this infringes on Zax, " What is the difference..? either it does, or does not, and that will be determined,--and the issue resolved-- and probably sooner rather than later.* " What might make sense would be if Tascam reverse-engineered some of the guts of a ZFR etc and is getting busted for it." that clearly does not appear to be the case, and in fact there appears to be no unscrupulous or malicious intent. " It doesn't seem like the fact that the DRs are a small portable recorder that could (or could not) be used with a wireless mic could be the bone of contention….? " well, it seems that some facts seem so to someone, and enough so that someone else, when told, agreed to delay its introduction to the usa until the matter can be resolved. that may not be the specific issue (bone of contention) of infringement, there is legitimate concern that both parties share that there may be some pretty certainly inadvertent infringement.... it happens! no one is out to make enemies, and it seems to be being handled properly in a congenial manner *there is no requirement that either party make any public disclosures regarding the matter, unless they actually file court documents, which would become public records. folks, get over this, please...
  8. Larry: " The patent office is overwhelmed and understaffed. Rotten is not saying we shouldn't have a patent system but that we need a better working patent system " I can agree that there are issues, like staffing and throughput, but in the quote from RC, I got the implication he meant that the malfunctioning patent system (flaw) was that it is keeping TEAC from possibly infringing on other (Zaxcom) patents unchallenged, to the detriment to those who want to buy something Zaxcom invented, but for cheaper...(did I say that correctly?? ) I believe patents are operating properly in that respect, as when Lectrosonics challenged a wireless product that Sony introduced. .
  9. do I really want a dealer whose image is a hungry shark, on the attack..? If it is ET, you bet.
  10. Rotten: " As consumers we are hurt by a malfunctioning patent system, because it inhibits innovation and economic growth. " I disagree... I'm doing that a lot recently... but if someone invents something, and patents it, others may be able to license that IP. when I discuss IP in my classes (typically regarding music), I ask my students, who typically tend to believe they can borrow whatever they need, how they would feel if Stephen Spielberg, or Quentin Tarantino "borrowed" some of their (the students') IP, and included it in their big budget movies.... then the light bulbs illuminate!
  11. OS: " They can't possibly put junk in a camera like that and ..., if they decided to go cheap on the timecode with the Amira then that's just... Well. I can't see how that could have saved a lot of money " did I miss something big ??
  12. S: " Do you think a higher sensitivity mic, ... would help me to capture my whispering actors better than the Countryman B3? " quite probably... as I noted, the Shure wireless systems are not so typical in our niche of production sound with images...
  13. RR: " Why... is that any of your business? " because you asked..?
  14. BBC: " And a nation state may have written it to serve its spying agencies' needs. ".... and in other news about NSA...
  15. CW: " it will record blank audio tracks and mess up picture sync for separate audio. " and this is based on ..? HUH ?? " if you aren't sending audio to camera make sure you turn off the audio on the camera " off or on, there is no audio (aka blank tracks)... maybe you are charging your clients too much ?? " the camera will slip out of sync by 1 frame roughly after about 4 or 5 takes. " rejam every 3 takes..? sync boxes + external TC ??
  16. WELCOME ZK : " several independent feature films, a couple of feature documentaries " well, you are already doing features! wow! and there is an "available for work" section, on jwsoundgroup.net ... and you could introduce yourself to us with your story in the "who I am..." thread.
  17. Constantin: " It really seems like you are assuming something, Senator, " or maybe I know something... meanwhile, " it's Tascam not making friends.. " are you, by comparison saying that TEAC/TASCAM deliberately, and knowingly decided to include in their products something patented by others ??
  18. CW: " So shooting a feature on this camera.... Still trying to figure out the issue. " does the same thing happen if you are shooting something that is not "a feature" ??
  19. VR: " , I think zaxcom may have pantented " it isn't about what you think. patents are public documents when they are issued, thus giving others constructive notice of what is protected.
  20. simi: " Emotionally charged language has only been present on this forum, and I never used it IRL. " so, this forum is not real life... I see...? er, no I don't.
  21. Constantin: " I said that there is a difference, and it is audible " and I tend to differ: while there are different specs, with recordings properly made, I suspect few could reliably hear the differences in a blind test. JP: " This is actually good life advice. My brother is a mechanical engineer with a masters degree from MIT. He said a prof once gave them the advice that if you want a raise, you have to be ready to quit and get the same job elsewhere. There was some evidence that engineers did not get raises like people in other positions in a given company, so the workaround is to leave and go elsewhere. " I tend to agree, though not necessarily limited to engineering... " if you work hard you climb the ladder as you go. " this is still sometimes true, but in the case of the OP, he is asking for more money for the same job, or less, rather than looking to climb the ladder to become, say, production manager, or producer... now, from the Boutique Production facilities' POV, this would mean hiring another, separate, PA, paying sound more, + rental + transpo; this means they go to their clients and raise their rates, so then their clients, in kind, respond by saying they liked what they were getting for the price they were paying, but maybe this boutique has outgrown us! sf: " Taking the "fancy" kit out of the equation, what would you recommend for wireless and recorder? " the Sennheiser EVO's wireless are an excellent value. you could add a nice shotgun and boom pole kit, oh, you probably don't do that... (BTW, the AT 897 is an excellent value short shotgun mic). and TASCAM products are great values. CS: " He's not going to steal your jobs or wives or houses just because he buys a 633. get over it. " I agree here, although as a boutique agency that has been slowly developing its internal video and audio departments., I suspect a lot of us are seriously suggesting keep the gear simple for "the inexperienced grip/PA/sound/utility person who they find next to learn with" ...oops, that is the bridges topic).
  22. JA: " My scans indicate not," well, the RX is actually doing the scanning... " but I'm wondering if I really need a more detailed analysis to see what's going on. " send it off to a testing lab. CK: " Seems unlikely the 788 would be effecting the radios, " this is based on..? actually, a lot of effort (documented in older threads here) went into keeping this to a minimum on the 788, after the 744 proved to have some issues. RF emissions from processors and drives, etc are always a potential issue, and a lot of work is required to keep it minimal
