  1. the click-on above did not connect to anything here is a google search based on the indicated model #: https://www.google.com/search?q=Leviton+515CV-LIT&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8
  2. ohhh lawd. i am so staying out of this. but for fun i will post a photo of a sticker i saw in williamsburg brooklyn yesterday.
  3. Nah it's just a stock idiomatic expression that is still used frequently in that section of the city; it indicates quality and perceived consensus about the same, very good, great, or, size, meaning bigger than the average. There is no "Y" sounding vowel. To pronounce it properly you drop your jaw down low and pronounce the "U" from the back of the throat so the sound of the vowel resonates in your chest. Typically the expression is prefixed by another common Queens idiom; example: "freakin"(H)uge and spoken as if it were one long word.
  4. It is how New York City residents from Queens (where Trump was born and raised) pronounce the word 'huge'--with a capital, silent 'H'. Example: "I walked into the new Gotham Sound on 36th Avenue in Long Island City, over in Queens and wow it's totally (H)uge."
  5. mmmmaybe?? i didn't speak to any crew about it. but i was wondering why cam op didn't mount the setup on a grip head and a flange screwed into some apple boxes.
  6. There is an Ebay seller who is selling hex chuck adapters for a lot of makes and models. Rather than put a link that will go stale I will instead copy/paste his headline: Hex Bit Adapter for Millers Falls Yankee Stanley 130 30 68-130 30A 68-130A B
  7. And it saved your ears for sound work. Power drills are nasty noisy. Great advantages for these thingys in drilling because downward or lateral force is used to keep aim on target without having to use a lot of muscle to keep the weight a power drill from throwing things off. No tear out on small fine holes and great for making a smidge of a pilot hole as a mark. I am kicking myself for not having one for the last 30 or so years.
  8. Does anyone ever use one anymore? I recently had to put a center punch and pilot hole down inside of a long channel, through one object into another; it was not a job for a small hammer and an impact center punch, or a powered drill. A Yankee Screwdriver with a drill bit chuck adapter did the job. These were common when i was a child but are now discontinued and can be found on Ebay. Be aware that different Yankee Screwdriver models require an adapter that fits that model; most adapters fit on several, but not all models.
  9. My feeling is that the law is applicable for out of the city freelancers with clients in the city. Any possible defense that cited locality of the freelancer would most likely be ruled invalid by a judge the first time the issue is put forth.
  10. The New York City Council voted unanimously on Thursday to give freelance workers a set of protections against wage theft that are believed to be the first of their kind in the country. Known as the Freelance Isn’t Free Act, the measure requires anyone hiring a freelance worker to agree in writing to a timetable and procedure for payment, and increases the potential awards to freelancers bringing legal complaints against those who have failed to pay them promptly. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/28/nyregion/freelancers-city-council-wage-theft.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fnyregion&action=click&contentCollection=nyregion&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=2&pgtype=sectionfront&_r=0
  11. In my American empirical experience, most 'knock jockeys' are named 'Gus.'
  12. The gap in marketing is jaw dropping. We do not see this type of demographic targeted marketing from the high end manufacturers. Regarding the inserted screengrab, Zoom has clearly linked indie with pro and trumpeted the price gap between their product and the high end pro gear, although I think the slant is misleading about putting 'high quality sound front and center.' In years previous, this has not been the case where sound was recorded using a handheld Zoom H4N and they got whatever they got out of it and some of it not very good. The aging hipster soundman model with receding hairline and too many artisan pulled pork sliders/craft beer chasers belly says a lot. Their market has grown up a bit and got wise that they now offer a better way to better sound. And they groomed their previous purchasers to 'buy twice.'
  13. have a backup plan when things go bad. an extra mic, some kind of preamp or a phantom power supply that gets your signal into the camera and a way to monitor camera and some extra cables. most producers will be somewhat understanding when there is an equipment failure that requires an alternate technique to capture the sound. failure to have a backup plan that can be executed quickly is bad for your brand too. if it was the producer's equipment that went bad that is no good for the producer's brand as well. at the end of the day, when there is an equipment failure or snag that was worked out quickly everyone will be happy (more or less) or relieved/satisfied that the shoot was completed. in some instances, executing a backup plan quickly when things go bad will make your brand look very good because you saved the shoot. they will remember it = good for your brand.
  14. Become an indie pro today, use it to hook up your go pro to the new zoom f4 and you're in business!! No doubt some that some people will actually generate work for themselves by upgrading to better audio for go pro. has anyone ever tried to input time code on the audio track on these thingys?
  15. it's not exactly greed, perhaps financial gain is a better way of putting it. the process of introducing new and lower priced technology into professional and consumer marketplaces is nothing new. i think the effect of this item on pro mixing is negligible. the 5d crowd is a different mindset that does not generally have deep pockets. on the other hand, the F4 does, for sure, blur the line between indie and pro. i give zoom high marks for balls in competing against its own 8 tracker and the pro companies at the same time. the pro companies chose not to compete against their own higher priced products and did not introduce a similar item, although they easily could have. you can't blame zoom for that.
  16. ok back to square one. instead of shame you get high marks for developing and honing primitive wire stripping techniques. maybe you should get a decent vintage electrician's knife with a sheepsfoot blade and a 10,000 grit water stone for getting it scary sharp. i've seen old timers use these knives back in the day and do good work that i could probably never do. if i was to try, i would choose a Brous Blades Silent Soldier Wharnciffe style blade. either blade style is good for not poking yourself because there's no pointy tip.

  18. after a good night of sleep i will flip flop on my 'shame on you' comment. if Mirror can strip the casing of a wire off using a razor blade, without breaking any strands inside, then he is an expert.
  19. lol shame on you. i guess there's always one in the batch.
  20. Is there anyone in the USA who does not have at least one in their toolbox?
  21. i happened upon a shoot in williamsburg brooklyn. nice bunch of guys on the grip truck and one fellow gets inducted into the b.o.c.p. archives.
  22. first commandment of sound for inexperienced or newbies: don't buy crap. the argument for buying good stuff has been indicated innumerable times on this forum. sound king looks like a piece of crap, because it is a piece of crap. good preamps are priced higher because they are not crap: look at this stuff: sound devices mp-1 or shure fp 23 - fp 23 is a bargain, i own one. sonosax sxbd1 (i own one, my preference--costs a lot, sounds great, limiter is not so good) mozegear mini papi (but you'll need an np1 battery with battery cup + hirose 4 pin to power it). audioroot femto --2 channel preamp -- looks like a bargain-- i haven't used it, but i would buy it if i needed or wanted to try something new. second commandment: learn to hook up stuff and work with it (gain staging comes into play here a lot of times. mess around and mess things up and develop intuition). mic to preamp to recorder is a great place to start. mini recorders (there are lots and people like, love or tolerate or hate zoom mini recorder products) zaxcom zfr recorders -- just my preference -- no opinion on other recorders third commandment: buy and try--wisely.
