Philip Perkins Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 Yesterday was our shoot at the Justin Bieber concert (in Oakland), all behind the scenes. I spent most of the day sitting in hallway outside his dressing room in my full bag rig, everything on, swapping batteries to a charger on my cart, as we waited for himself to give us shards of time in which to shoot the little promo pieces my client needed for their product tie-in. The tour is, as you might expect, the full-boat mega pop 2010 edition--all the bells and whistles. Interesting for me--I hadn't been around this kind of thing in a long time, and had forgotten the bigness of it all. Two moments: 1: JB comes tearing out of his dressing room on a Segway scooter, and we go tearing off after him--the shooter/director w/ a Canon 5D, two electricians w/ battery-operated LED light-panels, and me w/ my rig and boom. Through the labyrinth to a place where JB is doing meet and greet and photo ops w/ a huge line of fans--probably who got the tickets to do this from radio call-ins. At one point a grizzled, grey haired man is ushered up to JB w/ 2 little girls. He looks up to the camera: Bob Weir. The gaffer and I knew who he was, as did the guy taking stills for JB's site. I don't think JB knew who he was, and he was hustled away like the rest of the fans in the long line. 2: We were there to shoot JB up to the moment he hit the stage, and forbidden to shoot after that. At the end of a long day of getting tiny little scenes with him interspersed w/ very long waits , JB and his crew did a group prayer, a big boo-yah cheer and disappeared through the back-stage curtain. And then....that sound. 20,000 plus teenage girls, all screaming at once. All the hair on the back on my neck stood up. Something very deep and tribally primal happening at the brain stem level. They drowned out the stupifyingly loud PA system for that moment. ....wild.... Philip Perkins Quote
old school Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 That was a well written slice of life. The abstract juxtapositions paint a picture large in my mind Philip P. Thanks. Bob Weir? Did he have his granddaughter with him? CrewC Quote
Guest BobD Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 Bob Weir is doing an impression of Jerry lately...... New look.... big grey beard.... strange, yes... To Deadheads like myself...... a person worthy of saying hello to... a very nice and polite guy... We love all the bandmembers.... not just for their music, but the many contributions to society they have made 20 different ways over the years... As for the Beaver, Jeeez Wally!!! Quote

Did he have his granddaughter with him? CrewC Musta been. I got to do an interview con guitar @ his studio last year, he was in fine form then. He had a very patient look on his face w/ Justin.... Marc Wielage Posted July 18, 2010 Report Posted July 18, 2010 20 years from now, Justin will look like Bob Weir! As Howard Stern said, "I have two words of advice for Justin Bieber: 'Leif Garrett.'" --Marc W. Quote
Rob Lewis Posted July 23, 2010 Report Posted July 23, 2010 Great story Phil, I get to endure the same thing this weekend in Phoenix for a reality show. Only I have to take a feed from the house of 2 songs during the concert and then have a cast member go on stage to present an award. Frequency coordination is my biggest worry. Fun Fun! Quote
studiomprd Posted July 23, 2010 Report Posted July 23, 2010 Att'n Mick: "CBS made headlines (and gained a hefty ratings boost) from having Taylor Swift guest star on "CSI" last year. Now the crime drama's fall premiere has landed Justin Bieber. " Quote
Mick Posted July 24, 2010 Report Posted July 24, 2010 Worked with him today. He's not bad for a first timer and was very professional, although you can see the child in him being eroded away like onion skin. Quote
John Coffey Posted July 26, 2010 Report Posted July 26, 2010 Uhhh, if anyone can get my 8 year old daughter to see a fleeting glimpse of him on their set, I would be the hero dad of all time....I know, that's so unprofessional of me, but I can't help myself Quote
studiomprd Posted July 27, 2010 Report Posted July 27, 2010 They used to castrate them: Justin Bieber is taking tips from former child singer Usher to make sure his breaking voice doesn't ruin his career. The 16 year old is struggling with his high-pitched songs as puberty takes its toll on his vocal cords and he has enlisted the help of a top singing coach to keep his performances note- perfect. Justin admits he is also counting on his music mentor Usher, who began singing professionally at the age of 11, to guide him through the trying time. Quote
brndettecj21 Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 Changes on his voice is normal as it is a part of growing up. Usher could be a great influence on him. He always makes his fans and supporters happy though many people dislike him. is justin bieber bi Quote
Philip Perkins Posted August 24, 2010 Author Report Posted August 24, 2010 Well, I think he could still develop his voice, just always practice or have a voice lesson. He is a singer, so he is now popular, but he could still have more been exercising his voice. I know he could be better for that , he has the potential to be the best. online My son (25) and his buds just threw a surprise "Justin Bieberthday Party" for one their friends. They all dressed up like Justin, did their hair so they could do the famous "Bieber Flip" and walked around with an enormous sense of self-entitlement being rude to each other. It was quite a success, apparently, esp after a few beers. phil p Quote
Izen Ears Posted August 27, 2010 Report Posted August 27, 2010 Working with another famous Justin (JT to his fans) he commented on some promo contest where fans had to have their hands on a truck longer than the others in order to get front row seats (like the doc Hands on a Hardbody [which always reminded me of Stephen King's story "The Long Walk"]): "People are so STUPID!" I guess his childhood is long behind him... Dan Izen Quote
dfisk Posted August 30, 2010 Report Posted August 30, 2010 Once his voice starts cracking they'll start using a ton of autotune on him. Nobody will notice. Quote
Eric Toline Posted August 30, 2010 Report Posted August 30, 2010 Right and in 6 months they'll say Justin who? Eric Quote
