  1. Use the Ghostery add on with mozilla firefox to block tracking cookies. works great. don't stalk me bro!!
  2. A trailer for the documentary about Ugly George, public access tv hero, reality tv and broadcast sleaze pioneer. Warning: Adult Content!!
  3. Boom Operators -- Cool Photos!! (Mel Blanc, Boom Op.)
  4. my apologies if i appeared to be questioning your experience, i was not. i merely find the problem interesting. i looked at the manual and it appears the functions act like an expander, but not exactly. it's not a gate either as explained in the Attenuation subsection of Automix: Sets how much each microphone is attenuated when a person stops talking. When a person stops’ talking that microphone is not closed, the microphone is actually attenuated. The level of attenuation is adjustable here. In some environments it may be more palatable to hear some or most of the ambient microphone noise all the time rather than hear the noise mute and then reappear when someone talks. Please note that regardless of this setting the last active microphone will always remain open. Attenuation can be set between 10dB and 80dB. ----- i also noticed that there's a compressor at the input stage of the Nomad. i would switch it off.
  5. i am not a nomad user nor have i read the the manual. are there expander settings on each channel? expanders and gates usually need some fiddling.
  6. i showed up to a three day indie shoot with my awesomely awesome sononsax sx bd1 rig, expecting their usual canon 5d but discovered they had the alexa mini--and no audio cable that would get me in the camera. we did dual system. the camera does have noise that permeates the room while rolling, very noticeable within 3-4 feet of the camera, not crazy loud, but it's there.
  7. what SQN model is that? i likey. as someone who uses Sonosax SX-BD1 regularly i would like to see more thingys of that type. A Sound Devices MP1 with a full segment meter display, internal 2 channel recorder, tone generator and camera monitor return would be welcome and i'd buy it in two seconds flat.
  8. Jeff, I'm sending my sincerest condolences to you and the family and wishing all of you the best, knowing that the loss is only somewhat offset by the immense pride you all feel as people in the industry are seriously reflecting upon his accomplishments as cinematographer and filmmaker. Well done, Mr. Haskell Wexler.
  9. cheap backup rig: a shure fp11 mic to line amplifier and a denecke phantom power supply. you'll have your boom mic working and it will output to the camera. you won't be able to see a meter or monitor perfectly but you'll be up and running quickly. if there is a portable monitor that is displaying camera audio meter levels, make it yours!! you'll want to hear camera return so a long 3.5mm cable and a connector to attach your headphones would be in this backup kit as well. want to control headphone level? a shure fp 12 or fp 22 headphone amp and more cables/connectors. all these shure items can be found cheap on ebay.
  10. Coles 4104 is a great mic, but doesn't sound natural or neutral. but i would use it on a vo that could use some 'style' points. i own one but have never plugged it into a board that had 3/4 band eq. who knows maybe it would tweak up nicely and sound akin to an EV RE20 with a little extra something or other. as a background noise killer the Coles does the job it was designed to do. getting up close to a 57 that is placed like a boom (minimizes the room) and taking advantage of proximity effect (increased bass response and minimizes the room) works. my fave dynamic mic of that type is a vintage Beyerdynamic M200. i would be prepared to try two mics quickly and see what works best with talent and the room.

  12. an internal pulley/spooler system using a very thin cable, one per section, would be would be the correct mechanical solution if electronics had nothing to do with it. but add in electronics, soldering, pumping the signal through the pulley/spooler sections would increase the likelihood of outright failure due to tension/wear and tear.
  13. the way i read it, she asked: 'how will this function?' and did not ask the usual question which provoked controversy: 'what should i buy?'.
  14. she did not, as others have before her (all male, if i recall correctly) start a thread asking questions from a clueless foundation (recommendations for what to buy, whats the difference between this or that, etc). she obviously did quite a bit of homework before asking and thus, because of that, received a warmer welcome than others who asked the tribe to figure out everything for them.
  15. jan gets a big gold star for getting it right the first time. also there are some great threads on the site about recording music for video, as well as the usual stuff mixers encounter on jobs. dive in and read. there's a lot to be said about the 'problem solving' mindset on here and the advice comes from the folks who, like you, take the job seriously.
  16. yes to water!! water gives you energy, and sometimes we get confused--a little bit of thirst makes us think we're hungry. hungry?? drink some water first!!
  17. SOS: Once in a while, a high-quality, affordable product comes along that makes the professional competition look overpriced... 'Overpriced.' They know their readers and market, who would be, if they were reading SOS, the same people who post on craigslist about having a great DP with a Red Camera and are offering $50 + Subway Tuna for a Sound Mixer. If you price an item for this crowd they will buy it without balancing out the pros and cons; there are more cons that negate the pros, than pros that would make it a very reasonable purchase--if it weren't for the cons. If it is a reasonable purchase, maybe the DPs with the Red Cam and no sound equipment should be pressured to have one along with some Sennheiser G3s to get through a shoot.
  18. get well soon!! lose as much weight as you can. excess weight leads to the big three, heart disease, diabetes and cancer. good to see you're such a badass about when/if the time comes. i'm the same way: i'm not afraid of the big one, i just don't wanna be around when it happens!!

  20. the best lessons i've picked is using the wah wah (aside from the funk idiom) to tamp down/add flavor/color when tracking a guitar sound that is just too generic, or, when too many guitar tracks = mud. find a sweet spot and leave it there. adds some nice grit and bite when hooked up with a good amp, (or even a crappy amp) and good distortion box, sometimes a phaser as well. run a vocal through it for an instant garage rock vibe. love these and have worn out a few as well as some Mu-trons and another brand Foxx, which was great while it lasted.
