  1. Poly files, all audio tracks embedded into a single file. When opened in a NLE/DAW, the file are imported to individual tracks on the timeline. Problem is, not all NLEs/DAWs will open poly files. Production should know if their.. and/or their postie's capabilities before hand and request accordingly. "Record as far above the noise floor as you can possibly get without clipping"? That's SOP for most... but one must have leave adequate headroom. Some unskilled overcompensate and record at ridiculous low levels others just hammer the limiters, neither is good.
  2. If someone asked for a specific record level range as above, I would assume they know little about production, are going to be a PITA and would charge more than usual.
  3. I just saw a HFT "Super coupon" for that cart; $79.. Moving blankets for $5 as well.
  4. I don't know the max SPL rating of your mic, but I would research that to rule the mic itself distorting.
  5. Yes, the Nite Ize 'Gear Tie'. Available in different lengths, colors, ect., available in Home Depot, Lowes, hardware stores.
  6. Like most dynamics, the 441 has a relative low sensitivity level so it should be very close to the 'sound source' and low talkers may present adequate gain issues as well. It also has a very tight pattern so the speaker can't drift much off-axis.
  7. I used this set-up in a vehicle with open windows, it worked out well. I used the Nite-Ize flexible wrap thingys for shock/holding the mics. This was in a pick-up but away from wind turbulence. The visors were not. YMMV.
  8. "The suspense is killing me!" > Me too; but just driving me to drink.. no problemo.
  9. Depends on your definition of 'expensive', but the Sony PCM 50 portable is allegedly quiet and has exceptionally good sounding internal mics, I would assume the updated PCM100 the same or better. "Is the DPA "4060 couple will be good enough to record this type of quiet sounds? > Probably... but not with the noisy awful sounding H4n.
  10. And his activism w/ the sloop 'Clearwater' on cleaning up the Hudson River. RIP Pete.
  11. Marketing toward the Zoom user crowd most likely. Maybe useful in some situations.
  12. I use the free 'Password Safe' for a vault. I keep user names, passwords and other private text info there. It can generate passwords with user defined password policy. Info and are stored securely on an encrypted local database.. There is also a PasswordSafe2Go disk-on-key version, where there is no need to install it directly on any any computer. http://passwordsafe.sourceforge.net d
  13. Yes, As was previously stated, some NLEs and DAWs can have mixed sample rates/ bit depth clips even within the same track. Otherwise a 44.1k file can be easily be re-sampled to 48k. Problems arise when files are different and.. undocumented.
  14. "I will be probably be fairly close to the boom-op for the shoots I will be doing." Yelling distance..
  15. Right you are Constantin, -90dBm is less than ( and preferable to in this scenario) -80dBm.
  16. 'Modulation' may not be the correct terminology, A 'Prx' measurement of more than -80dBm is good. -90dBm is better.
  17. "Now for the dr-680 users out there one thing that seems to drive me a little crazy is how on earth do you reset the takes" -- You can't reset the file name/counter w/o resetting freakin everything. (System> Initialize) includes, record parameters, limiters, HPF, trim, software mixer, ect., ect. A real PITA.. but what do you want for $600. I suggested to Tascam they 'fix' this annoyance in a firmware update but I doubt they will. The user file name characters are also limited to six as I recall.
  18. http://en-us.sennheiser.com/service-support-frequency-finder This Sennheiser frequency-finder page is for the US, They have other countries as well but you will have to search/find them. Choose frequency(s) in a vacant or low-modulation TV channel. Then manually check for RF when arriving at the location. An external RF scanner is another good option.
  19. FWIW, If the OP is not familiar with the 744's architecture, Input channels 3-4 are line level only, so two external mic preamps would be necessary for four microphones.
  20. The Zoom's 1/4" inputs are -10dB operating level, unbalanced .. but still go through the mic preamps anyway. Don't know about the H4n's 3.5mm inputs, I suspect they go through some unwanted noisy preamp stage as well. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. IMO, and in that price range, the Tascam TR-40 or 100mkII is a better recorder and offers +4dB balanced inputs.
  21. The 680 is rated at 9-14DC volts. the Audioroot is 14.4V which would probably be OK, but I would regulate it. In my unscientific record - run time 'tests', a fully charged 12V 82W/h battery will operate it for 7.5- 8 hr.s. (4/channels/tracks, 48k/24 BWF; no Phantom Pwr., all inputs line level source)
  22. The popular consensus was the Sony PCM D50 had the best sounding internal mics, so the Sony PCM D100 is likely the best candidate for a recorder with internal mics. I don't believe it has XLR input though. The SD 207/722 would be my choice for a 'two channel' recorder. The SD USB 2 would be good, for not that portable for 'field' work with a Macbook. An SD MixPre-D S/PDIF> Tascam DR100 is another relatively low cost portable option.
  23. Obviously the pin config on an XLR-5 is different... expect for pin-1/shield. I don't know what Arri recommends for unbalanced connections. Likely cold jumped to shield..
  24. Never used a ERX, but I have G3 and Comtek cables with right-angle 3.5mm Neutrik plugs . Even if the jack is recessed somewhat, the Neutrik plug-in section is long enough to be fully inserted, at least the DSLRs that I've encountered.
