  1. Well, I see Rasmus asked the exact same thing already. Have to remember to google it first! http://jwsoundgroup.net/index.php?/topic/8963-can-gunshots-damage-a-lav-mic/
  2. Thanis for the replies. Basically I've no time to get additional mics, the 4060's will be there just for dialogue. I'll be close by with the CS3e and a dynamic mic for the gunshots.
  3. Like the title says, I have a shoot coming up with the talents going to a shooting range. The lavs in use are DPA 4060's, and I'm wondering if the mic diaphgrams might be damaged by the sound pressure from the guns fired by the talents (most likely 9 mm)? How about a Sanken CS3e? Thanks for any insight.
  4. Yes, this is highly unlikely though since this is in the Helsinki centre and the talents are usually browsing Instagram etc when this particular issue occurs. The building has some heavy elevator and other renovation going on, wonder if those guys might have any equipment that could be the cause.
  5. Well, certainly not many phones operate with GSM nowadays (unless your provider has no 3G/4G coverage in the area) and as you can probably hear, the sound is totally distinct of how the classic GSM interference sounds like. But if it isn't the phones, I'd certainly like to know what it is. As we can hear, it also doesn't mess with the signal so far as to distort the voice or anything, it just gets mixed in.
  6. I'm doing a reality show at the moment and am sometimes getting this strange interference on wireless. The wireless in question is a Sennheiser 2000 series with a DPA d:screet 4060 mic going into a Nomad. Like you can hear from the sample, it is a quiet pulse not too far from a digital "phone ring" sound. Now I want to ask if anyone might recognize what it is? I'm guessing it might be 4G or 3G phone interference or some other type of interference from a smartphone bleeding into the signal? If it is, then I suppose I'm S.O.L. since the talents of the show are on their phones all the time. Luckily the interference is not worse than that. interference.wav
  7. If you want wireless on everyone but don't have the wireless, see if some of the actors have all or most of their lines next to another actor, maybe even facing one. Then just mic up the other one. If they are close enough to each other, acoustics are nice and the actor with the mic doesn't cause any clothes rustling, the mic might pick up the other actor just fine. But as others have hinted... might be overkill.
  8. 6/6, with a washing machine in the drying sequence 2,5 metres to the right! With a Focusrite Saffire interface and Ultrasone Pro 2900 headphones and quite a few times of going through the provided samples. The result might've indeed been different with an iPhone.
  9. The Nomad channels have a notch filter which might have its uses in very specific conditions, but I'm not sure I'll ever be using even that. Apart from your usual hi-pass filter, applying something destructive to the signal on the field is a scary thought. And I'm strongly of the opinion that if a production company isn't budgeting post, then... they get what they pay for.
  10. If it sounds good, it sounds good. Hard to know without hearing it but if you don't hear that ugly clipping/popping sound you sometimes get with digital clipping, it might be fine. Personally, if I had a clipped piece of audio like that, I would try to declip it with something like iZotope RX4, and if required then try and add crunchiness in other ways (like plugins that introduce simulated analogue tape overdrive etc).

I think I will still refrain from activating till I see something straight from Steinberg.
  12. For 25 fps, that would be around 3/4 frames. It would be fairly easy to compensate for, but one more step of course. For camera hops, I wonder if the more pressing issue is that automatic dynamic range thing it's using. No idea if you can turn that off. Not a problem for scratch audio, but for someone looking for alternatives for wirelessly hopping usable primary audio it might indeed be a different story.

Incidentally, I have recently registered for and downloaded Wwise. Now I just need to set aside some time to start learning!
  14. I love it when hobbyist filmmakers etc "review" things on YouTube and start talking about the rejection on lav mics that are omni or grossly mixing up concepts etc. That being said, I'd also love some thorough reviews/tests on systems like this or any other system, recorder or wireless. For example, when it comes to wireless systems, a nice thing would always be to hear an A-B test with lavaliers of the same model right next to each other on the reviewer, with the other lav through the wireless system and the other cabled. And then have links to original WAV files on the video description. Or, if the test was a shotgun mic, test it in different environments. Not that such tests are replacements for trying something out yourself, but they could be useful if done correctly.

    Going all blue.

Electric! Though I have to say, I personally prefer the black-orange on my Petrol bag. It goes well with my orange NP-1 batteries and orange Explorer hard case. Maybe I should get these, too (also prefer the velour to the faux leather)

I don't really mean it as in relation to any install procedures, I merely mean it as a means of getting an update from 5.5 to 7 as cheaply as possible, judging from current pricing. There's quite a leap from N4->N6.5 upgrade compared to N5->N6.5 so one would think a N5->N7 upgrade will eventually be more expensive than a N5->N6.5 upgrade that activated at the right time will sail you through to the grace period. And if I order a physical copy of the 6.5 upgrade now, I'll just wait on activating it till 7 is released or a few days before, so I'm golden.

I just realized I could just juy the upgrade and simply not install/register it until the 7 release date is known, right?
  18. For run and gun stuff I use a Rycote S-series. Super quick to get from outdoor to indoor mode and if there's are sudden high wind situation for which the S's own fur is not enough, I can just throw a dead cat on that.
  19. Have a look at Pinknoise's selection. They have really good customer service. For that budget you might find a proper boom (like those K-Tek's) but I'm sure it'll be aluminum and therefore heavier. But I think Rode's pole is aluminum anyway, right? They have an Ambient boom for a bit over 300, but it's a short one, and for your only/first boom you should probably get one that goes to 3-4 metres or so. http://www.pinknoise-systems.co.uk/boom-poles.html
  20. I also have a Philips TV with LED backlights, it chooses the hue based on whatever color is present near the edges of the actual screen. It's actually not unpleasant at all, when watching, say, a Blu-Ray release of a rock concert. As for Marc's comment, I hear what you're saying, yet as you know it's the same as with sound - it's being watched on all kinds of different equipment. As well as with not only wildly different adjustments but wildly different lighting as well. If you ask me, Philips' worst crime is certainly not the lights but at least one model of TV's I know (my sister has on) that has the interpolating TruMotion (or whatever they call it at Philips) feature not only on by default, but to add, should I say, injury to insult, you can't turn it off!
  21. Wasn't the character wearing semi-baggy college pants etc in the blanket scenes? So a smaller transmitter could've been hidden to his leg or whatever, of the blanket was actually causing signal trouble. What I'm surprised they couldn't hide was that one crewmember reflected in the final shot of one ep where Jimmy is leaning against the empty office's window wall. The figure is fairly clear and I instantly thought "crewmember"... but then the crewmember moves and it's super-obvious, since there's nothing else in the shot but Jimmy and the window. I would think they could've at the very least mask it in editing (with tracking if necessary) so that the figure stayed in place instead of moving. Oh well, goofs happen of course. That little thing aside, I love the show! Odenkirk's voice as Jimmy's "assistant" always cracks me up, learning more about Mike is great, and for video gamer it was fun to see Michael Mando pop up - he very well plays a psychotic bad guy in the video game Far Cry 3, with mo-cap, face-cap (at least with the face modeled after him) and so was very recognizable.
  22. Top result on Google search cloth cable xlr: http://www.pelusomicrophonelab.com/parts/Cables.html I boom with an uncabled pole (much more common here in Europe, I read here actually), just with regular cable. I've never actually even got to try a cabled boom. Especially for "run and gun" reality work a high quality cabled pole, especially one collapsable to "baby" length might be good though.

Damn, I should maybe do a quick upgrade from 5 to 6.5 -> grace period upgrade to 7? edit: or wait until they announce a release date or something.
  24. It is reasonable to assume that the capsule is the supercardioid Mk41.
