  1. Are those Spanish tiles that your cart is resting on? Oh my gosh..... Just kidding..... This is one of the finest looking carts I have seen... I am not sure about standing up to mix though, maybe because I am lazy as heck and some shoots seem to last forever..... Nice Job. Thank you for posting the pictures of your baby!!! - pshap
  2. I started out in the Sound Business as a Boom Operator and gradually elevated to a mixer after years of being an A2. I did not know David Allen Smith but found his cartoons to be right on the mark and funny as heck. Not answering phone calls and not showing up for a scout is a sure sign that something is amiss. What an awful way to perish. My heart goes out to David's friends and family..... I will share his few cartoons that I have seen with my sound buddies.... - pshap
  3. Shall key an eye out for you ..... please let us know if these items turn up. Pshap
  4. Beautiful!!! Obviously a BMW cart because of the sticker on it... I really enjoy seeing pictures of other sound guys carts...... Every single one has something unique to observe.... Please keep posting your pics. Pshap
  5. Congrats!!! Years and years of fun ahead Jeff.... Lucky, lucky, lucky, thats for sure.... Pshap
  6. Does anyone know the policy on walk away meal breaks? The crew and I were driven around for our shoot in a 15 passenger van and when lunch time came we were told it was a walk away. No one had their personal vehicles. We stopped in a strip mall with a few places to eat. Union shoot - Major big production Company. Anyone know IATSE policy? El Cheapo Production Company...... Thats what I think.... We were all pretty surprised. Not a money issue, just a really green Assistant Production Manager. By the way, Production did NOT pay for lunch. Let me know what your thoughts are... Thank you all.... pshap
  7. I attended today but it was not easy. After running all over the Sportsman Lodge, fighting my way though the production of "Eleventh Hour" where 150 or so bathing suit wearing teenagers were partying it up by the pool, past tons of crew working and giving me the stink eye, found the Vista room where the the Nagra was comfortably sitting on the chinda cart on display. My Journey was well worth the battle getting there.... Once inside, I graced the presence of John Owens, sales manager for Nagra.... Peter Weibel who spent 20 or so minutes showing me how this beautiful piece of equipment functioned, Charles Parra from Denecke and his company, Kim were close at hand, David Waelder spent a few minutes with me talking about the Chinda Cart, Senator Mike Michaels, C.A.S. and I engaged in a wonderful conversation and then Mr. Chinda himself told me how he came into fabricating his babies. The presentation was very informative for me. Apparently, I just missed Jeff Wexler who had stopped by as well as Jennifer Paro from Coffey Sound and Steve Joacham from Location Sound. The Nagra is a bit pricey but will certainly do what is asked of it. Some of the features are quite amazing and the opportunity was presented to me to use this unit "free of charge" on a few of my upcoming shoots so I could really get a feel for it. It was quite light for it's size and there was no heat emanating from it's surfaces at all..... The built in speaker was a neat touch as well as two headphone outs..... The Chinda cart is amazing as well. Lots of thought has gone into it's creation. It was not only beautiful but so well thought through. I especially liked the dual hand disc brakes and all of the attachment opportunities....... Very light too. I would certainly enjoy owning one of each of these items described above and maybe after a few more fruitful sound opportunities I can really entertain the idea of purchasing one of each...... Thank you to those who attended and made this day a success. I have made a few new friends and I hope to spread the word about what I saw and how I was treated with all of my sound brothers and sisters..... Pshap - Paul S. Shapiro
  8. When anyone on "set" or on "location" tries to rush me with my audio, I resort to this little know but widely experienced truth and explain it to them..... "You know why you see lightning before you hear thunder? Because even God must wait on sound....now if He must wait, then so must you......." My advice is to take your time and make sure your audio is right...... Better to take a few minutes capturing excellent audio on "set" or "location" then having to rely on maybe fixing it in post. Sound is your department, not the directors, it is your name on the line regarding audio, not the directors....... Stand up and demand the time to perform your craft correctly.... I hope this helps... PSHAP
  9. It has happened and the results have been disasterous.....

  11. Johnny Simons as a Talent Agent....? Hah hah now thats some interesting stuff!!!. I know him as a very talented Cinematographer who has worked with talent such Debbie Allen and the like. He is the best and oh so mellow to work with. I have been fortunate to work with him many times over the last few years. I believe he also teaches a film making class at UCLA..... I cant wait to email him this picture and jar his memory..... What a great post CREW C..... pshap....
  12. While mixing into the Red One camera, I once used the female XLR to male TA3 connector cables that are supplied with the Red One camera. When using the supplied cables, strain relief was necessary and that created a problem. The Red One has enough issues on it's own for me, an audio mixer, to be adding to them so I decided to use the Fan type breakaway harness cable that can be used with my PSC breakaway harness cable. The main difference that the breakaway harness cable has is a male TA5 that plugs into the Audio out on the Red One camera. This frees up the 1/8 mini audio out on the Red One for headphones or anything else you want to stab in there.... Pshap
  13. Fellows.... I have built many ENG rigs from scratch, in the early morning darkness hours even, but I have never, ever encountered one of these "trey blocks" that are mentioned in the ad below... Can someone clue me in as to what this individual is referring to? Perhaps its a typo and they meant to say "set your own freq blocks"? Thanks a bunch... Pshap In reference to this post... "Looking for an experienced Audio Operator for traveling series. Must be tech savvy, able to set trey blocks and build rigs from scratch."
