  1. Great song - is that an UltraHarmonizer on the vocals? (of course not!!) Real talent in the artist, arrangement, and engineering too! MF
  2. Jeesh, Don't be such a weenie - I saw the movie, and never once was affected by that - because it sounded great to me. Kudos to the crew for the excellent soundtrack, and kudos to the wardrobe department for working with them to achieve it. Save for a sound person or a wardrobe person, who in the hell would give a ***t how the tie knot is. If the audience is focused on that in any movie, than the film has far greater problems - which of course this one does not have. MF
  3. I don't necessarily agree with that - and have had occasion to explain that, for starters, the human eye is the best lens on the market - and just because they can stare, "zoomed in", at a non-moving chest and see something, does not mean that it will be the least bit visible from the distance, while in action / motion. In essence, if anyone has to freeze the frame and zoom in to see my mic - I WIN. If someone on the team has done the mic-ing, I always try to check on it before we roll. Lav experience in this market is somewhat varied. If it happens more than once - a quick trip to the director or the producer usually solves the problem. Their interests lie in good sound and keeping on schedule, which will trump fashion any time..... If it doesn't, which is so rare I can't remember losing on one of these - well, they powers to be have "signed off" on it, and ce la vie. MF
  4. Broadcasting code is pretty easy - via Comteks - to any TC reader... or TC slate. MF
  5. TOD TC generated by a camera requires extra special attention to proper protocol. In this MO, the camera MUST roll first and call speed! Then, with TC active and rolling, other devices can then pick up at that point. I would NEVER count on a smooth flawless day having this code broadcast to me. Period. I have done hundreds of days with camera code hardwired to my DEVA, and then, set for AUTOLOAD, had nothing but success. As it appears that pre-roll is hardly an issue anymore, I could see a producer or post wanting to do rec-run code simply to have codes match roll-numbers. If they want that, hardwired is the only way to go for me.... In retrosepect, I have not done that process all year - so I guess this MO is pretty rare anymore. MF
  6. The BS is only coming from you guys - just because there is conservative support for the FairTax, you DISMISS IT??? There happens to be support for this concept from both sides, BTW. You know what I HATE - having to hire someone to figure out my taxes every year - Why do I need a degree in accounting to do my duty as a citizen ? And don't make any "mistakes" in our maze of rules and numbers, lest the penalties accrue. The FairTax is the only way to level out taxation - same percentage for everyone - rich, poor or in-between. How can you possibly be against that? You pay on what you spend. If you have any better ideas on eliminating taxation disparities between socio-economic groups, let us know. Oh, by the way - it does eliminate evasion and the temptation to do so. As a long-time supporter of the FairTax, stating that implementation of the FairTax is some sort of conservative ploy really chaps my ass. It's more about common sense - to millions of supporters, but somehow not you? Why the f** is it "anything BUT fair" -- back your BS up buddy. I'm waiting..... MF
  7. You need to take your idea and lock it up, legally that is.... get some legal advice first. MF
  8. Double system for $400 ? TC Slate ? Actually, I've been on lots of 3 person crews and short days with DSLR - for $800. Clients have been taught the right rate... Do understand that the camera rig probably commanded at least 350, and Kinos here rent for 100-125 per.... Also - producers DO talk to each other - and this rate structure can spread like an infection.... BTW - what is the contingency if the "day" exceeds the promised 4 hrs? MF
  9. John - you left out vehicle costs, gas, and mileage as they pertain to the margin on this type of job ! ) Plus, no one has mentioned that this type of client will be expecting that rate for time immemorial, and forget about actually what it is to "produce" and try to arrange, god forbid, more than one interview in a day, or maybe some extra b-roll, or standups, whatever. You buy resources for the DAY. What a client does with that is up to them. MF
  10. I am pretty sure that Berkeley Labs performed THIS restoration as well. It is a different, and older recording than the Edison Foil restoration initially posted. This recording was done by another inventor in France, and preceded any work of Edison's. Although he seems to be credited with the innovation, this was the FIRST recording. (Kinda like Columbus "discovering" America....) The full restoration process was featured in a fabulous AES Convention seminar a couple of shows ago. The recording was actually made on PAPER, if memory serves me. MF
  11. Here's the story from Wednesday's PBS Newshour - complete with sound! http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/science/july-dec12/recording_10-25.html MF
  12. busy day on the equipment page - bump bump MF
  13. I have worked with DITs that have these - they are quite DARK - so you monitors will look great, but you will need to add an interior light if you want to see anything else!! They pop up just like Pelsue tents, but that white outer skin is a big difference (often called UltraBounce). It will certainly keep more sun / heat from your den... I have two Pelsues - a regular and a double-wide - got both lightly used - and they are pretty good as is.... the extra ambient light is a bonus to me... but it can get hot in there. MF
  14. Thanks for finding this and sharing - I looked at the website and they have a lot of quality-driven broadcast clients all over Europe. This is a good concept - I don't do a lot of this "pack-mule" work (anymore) but it seems that the idea of wearing SOME of that weight on the back might be far better that up front. Did anyone see this product at the IBS this year? How about at the AES that is currently happening? Can't find info on who their US distributor might be. MF
  15. I have been thinking too..... of a hard rubber block ( "bobber-like" ) that could simply clip on to the antenna and hold it that way. One more question of Larry - if I did take the amp "offline" for a shorter antenna cable run, would there be any issue / problem / degradation from the Venue phantom power setting pushing voltage down the cables? (as that would be quite a time-consuming step to defeat if need be) MF
  16. Larry, Jason - Thanks so so much for the speedy response. I'm looking forward to giving this M.O. a whirl! MF
  17. Guys and Gals - The Lectrosonics UFM 230 manual wants these in place on a short run of RF cable - very close to the source - the antennas! Does anyone have any experience / pros / cons with mounting them directly to the side of a standard Lectro or PSC sharkfin? Perhaps right near the connector (Power coming from the Venue, of course... ) My guess is the velcro would insulate the metal boxes from the antenna plate - but would that (or ANY) placement on the plate have a negative impact on the performance ? I'm thinking of a, sort of, homebrew ALP 650 until I can afford a pair. MF
  18. Now with EXTREME regret, I will not be attending the show - haven't missed the SF AES since it started there in 2004. I picked up enough work to force my hand this time - so it'll be NYC for me in 2013 - hope the same get together happens there. This is such a great show - I hope many in this newsgroup have a chance to attend. MF
  19. Mark - Sorry for the sudden bad luck - I have two EON 15s and two EON 10s -- I end up using the 10s more lately (less VOG, more general playback) I bought the JBLs many many years ago, before the others even thought about making powered speakers. And made in America...... The newer generation of EONs are awesome - I demoed them at the last AES and they were fantastic. Mackies are nice, and I've seen some larger powered Behringers that sound perfectly fine too. For your situation and a quick fix, locally in Atlanta there is a SAM ASH store - this is near Cumberland Mall slightly inside 285. I prefer this store over GC and other alternatives - very good guys and straight shooters that actually know what they are selling. Ask for Gary in the Pro Sound Dept - 2999 Cobb Parkway Atlanta, GA 30339 Phone:(770) 818-0042 If you want to consider getting your speakers back in operation for a fair price - there is a great pro repair center right off of N. Druid Hills Rd. and fairly intown -- Wizard Electronics / (404) 325-4891 / Ask for Tristan / 9:30A-6:30A They have quite successfully worked on both of my 15s, which took quite a beating with music videos over the years. MF
  20. Mike is absolutely correct - and depending upon the combination of your self-esteem, self-worth, and negotiation prowess - be forewarned that under the A rea S tandards A greement, you might well experience a rate reduction and revenue loss. And now under the new ASA - you can be asked to do hazardous work, and if you decline, or ask for a bump do to the nature of the hazard - the union will NOT protect you or your job - the production can replace you at will. In the world of reality, that can go a long way. MF The "hazardous duty" clause in the previous contract has been completely struck
  21. Please elaborate, as that makes no sense to me at all.... MF
  22. That be it ! And there is also the MY-16-AT card for 16 ADAT outs which could = 32 I have no experience with the USB 16x16 or the MY 16x16 - just mentioning the possibility if the routing is there..... MF
  23. Use the ADAT outputs of the Yamaha into a Tascam MX2424 (I'm about to sell one!) for 24 tracks of .WAVs with TC .... BTW - a 40 track reality show is just plain sick..... I wouldn't ever feel "comfy" about all of that in a single polyphonic file of unrestrained runtime that seems to be the norm of that genre ... someday somethings just gonna give up sometime somewhere.... If the budget is there, a pair of Deva 16s would be the ideal - then you have MARF working it's magic for you. MF
  24. John - I have that show on my calendar, and a plane ticket as well - you can definitely count me in if work doesn't get in the way... There is a heck of a lot of places around Moscone - and Market Street is not too far away ! MF
