  1. remember we're talking about a manufacturer here, even though they also sell things directly to customers. But I think most shops absorp the price differences with their profit margin. So for the consumer the changes are not noticeable.
  2. that's exactly what I thought. So many cameras, yet no mic. Still, it worked out well and the sound mixer can be proud
  3. If you want to know with some certainty and well in advance what's going to happen to the spectrum in the coming years, you should follow the results of the World Radio Conference. This is where the usage of spectrum is decided, and yes, this is a global conference. Although, different countries implement the decisions at very different times. Check this out for more information: http://www.itu.int/ITU-R/index.asp?category=conferences&rlink=wrc〈=en It's a very dry read...
  4. Yes, the 8060 was intended as a successor to the 8060, I think, but it never succeeded. It's a companion now, as the 416 is still there. I think the 8060 is a great mic, when it works. There is another thread here with many examples where it doesn't work. Mine works well, though.
  5. Why 4 channels? The Schoeps thing is very expensive, and I'm not sure they even sell it separately. I had mine made at one of the usual suspects, but it was just three channels and no box. Just three Lemo plugs (it was for Schoeps CCM mics) going into a 7 pin XLR
  6. Sure, it's easy to calculate an exchange rate - any rate, but Ambient produce this stuff in Euro-Land. So variations in currency affect their profits directly, so they will want to avoid getting stuck with a price listed. I know of at least one dealer (in the UK) who basically says that prices can at change at any time due to currency instability
  7. Yes, the "bag in the trunk" approach would've worked just as well. Except when Bob gets out of the car. It'll be difficult then. Although there's no audio from him there, I think.
  8. Well, "clean" also depends on the mic placement. And with this work flow it's difficult to monitor the audio. But it worked out well, so... Of course it helped that Bob Einstein doesn't wear a seatbelt
  9. i'm not sure this test is at all relevant. How do you know the signal is not phase-reversed? You got a delayed output which got further delayed when you flipped the phase. That doesn't prove anything. It would be the same in both cases.
  10. auto-correct? Not too bad for this particular thread
  11. You have to actually choose a two-drive setting in the menu for it to work. Simply not connecting a third drive is not enough. It should work at 48k then.
  12. Oh great, that's an image I'll never get out of my head!
  13. but the Zoom is not a compromise. The HD-P2 would be a compromise.
  14. I think nature ambiances are about as critical for quiet pre-amps as it gets. I'd recommend getting the quietest gear you can find. I think the Tascam HD-P2 is the absolute minimum you should consider. Better yet would be a Sound Devices 702 or 722. for mics it's the same deal. Lavs tend to be a bit noisier than SDCs and LDCs. Still the 4060s could be adequate. It depends of course on your expectations, how nice do you want your recordings to sound? If you like'em hissy, the gear you're considering is fine
  15. Or get an rf amp
  16. Get a runner and have him run out of gas on the right lane, thus causing a traffic jam, which will be much quieter. BUT: this is illegal, dangerous and it wasn't my idea. I've never done it, but I so wish one day...
  17. Yes, but in your post you substituted receiver for antenna. That's probably what the Senator was referring to. That's all the difference
  18. absolutely. This thread was made for him
  19. yes. Good. I'm glad you realize that. I never said that it was. I explained in the very next sentence what I was trying to say.
  20. so what's your point? I gave the example of "real sounds" only to explain how I have a personal way of knowing that speakers and entire audio reproduction systems have improved. Without reading any specs.
  21. I'd just like to point out once more, dialogue will not be recorded at 32 kHz, with or without Zaxcom. It will be recorded at 48k and post will probably simply have no way of knowing what happened before that recording
  22. That's brilliant! And a little sad. Could be a good T-Shirt, though
  23. Yes, you're right, perception it is. Although I do think that our memories of the "good ol' days" are tainted by nostalgia, but that is perception, too. BTW, i didn't mean Honda in general. They build some great cars, just specifically the (old) Civic
  24. Absolutely agree, Christian. So far, on my end of things, directors, camera-crews, producers and whoever else, are always blown away when I talk to them about my transmitter that can record and I can remote-control it! Post rarely gets to know about the 32k limit, because all my tracks are recorded at 48k, so everyone is happy. I'm not in your market, but I have never ever been asked which wireless gear I use. At best, they ask if I have good ones, and I say yes, some of the best. Which is true. Nor have I ever been asked about which mic I intend to use. I had a discussion with a director about using the KMR82, but that was for creative purposes. Talking about sample rates, I really don't see that happening anytime soon. Post only ever raises a concern, when sonething goes wrong. At least, in my experience.
  25. Yes, I absolutely agree on the sound quality. I had to use a wireless boom the other day and I put on my 742. the scene was very quiet, the actors were whispering. It was a night shoot and even the crew was very quiet. This for me is where the Zaxcom TRXs really shine. They were absolutely quiet. I don't care about NeverClip so much, but the really quiet stuff is where they can play their biggest trump card. The recording was as quiet as possible, no extra radio hiss, no compander pumping, nothing. Every word was clear and understandable. The 16k cut-off might even be helpful by getting rid of some high freq hiss. Ironically, this was with the analogue outs not of the QRX, but an older RX900... AFAIK the TX transmits 32kHz, right, Glenn? So the QRX really has no chance...
