Rycote made their first shotgun microphones in their history and world asking: "How it sounds, what's weight, is it good, have you throw it in iceberg; does it work in UAE desert? HC-15 & HC-22 Shotgun Microphones is here and this topic calling you to post your worst & best experience with these microphones. Don't be cute, don't be humble, don't be generous. We hate that. Does is it sound better from Schoeps? Does it built like Sennheiser 416? Simple, clean, to-the-point-answers. I don't ask to jeopardize your NDA; but people with no rental in some countries will appreciate your tested files. === PS. I can't add more than 2 "tags" when I create a topic.   3. Hey, I just signed up and am happy to be part of this community. I'm looking for a windshield, mainly for field recording with my Mkh 8050/30 combo. The problem is that I'm really picky with sound quality.. The windscreen I'm looking for should be as transparent as possible. Meaning as little sound or pickup pattern coloration as possible. I actually care less about the wind protection itself as I'll never be recording in heavy conditions (for now). I've done some recordings with a regular Rycote Windshield (WS2 or WS4 can't remember) and also with a probably less known Sennheiser MZW 60-1 in the same location. Just between those two I felt the Sennheiser one was way more natural. The Rycote screen sounded as if someone has put an eq or multibandcompressor on it. I've read some good things about Cinela and am almost sold to them (the Pianissimo), but unfortunately I had no chance to do some test recordings. The first time I went out with my M/S rig, I only used foam on each mic and the results were great, but even very light wind started to interrupt my recordings and I had to sort out a lot of stuff in post. I wish I could achieve that same quality and clarity with a windshield. As I'm doing location sound aswell, it would be great if I could modify the windshield for my Mkh 8060, but it's not a must. (Rycote is definitley more flexible) Here are a few Cinela solutions I've found or that could probably be custom made: Cinela Pianissimo (8050/30, 8060 and probably also 8050/8040/30 Double M/S mounts available) Cinela Zephyx (8050/30, 8050 and maybe even 8060 (MZL) mounts, not ideal size, but should be possible. I've seen an Mkh 50/30 prototype on their website. But honestly the Piani size is fine and I don't need anything smaller) Cinela Leonard (I'm curios if the 8050/30 combo would fit into the Leonard Ball, similiar to the Schoeps M/S version. Is this the same 3D fabric used with the Piani? Has anyone compared the sound between Pianissimo and the Leonard Ball or used both outside? I feel this could be a small, light and cheap solution for mild wind conditions) Here are a few Rycote solutions I've found: Rycote Stereo Windshield WS AF MS Kit (very versatile, I could use this for 8050/30, 8060/30, 8050 single, 8060 single, 8050/8040/30 double ms, maybe the sound is better with this one vs the WS2?) Rycote Stereo Windshield WS AE MS Kit (same thing, but could transform this into the ORTF Version, 8060 only with MZL Connbox) Rycote Cyclone Windshield Kit - Medium (I think you can fit everything into this windshield aswell, I already have the back to back clips from Rycote. How does it sound compared to old Rycote Windshields and Cinela?) Any other brands you guys can recommend? I don't really care about the price. My approach is "buy good gear slow" and I would rather save up money for a year than buy a windshield that I hate. If any of you have some private recordings comparing Rycote and Cinela Windshields, I would love to hear them. I've already listened to every file and watched every video that is available to the public. Also what about foames and softies? Anything out there that fits my M/S rig and is wind protecting enough? Tl;dr: The most transparent windshield for my 8050/30 rig, I don't care about the windprotection that much, it should be better than some simple foam and keep the clarity of my mics.

Has anybody got experience using both Rycote and Rode windshield solutions?I am trying to mount a pair of Sennheiser MKH8050s in an ORTF configuration inside some wind protection for recording atmos outdoors. I have found a solution using a Rycote WS4 windshield and by making a couple of low-profile XLRs to get it all to fit inside.The problem is.. it fits, but only just. Even with the small mics and low-profile connectors, there is only about a millimetre or two between the inside of the windshield and the mics. This is causing the mics to bang against the inside with the slightest movement.I need just a little more space and so I am planning on buying a Rode windshield as I know that they are two or three centimetres fatter in diameter.Does anyone know if the Rode Blimp basket will slide onto the Rycote modular system - or if it can be easily modified to do so?Many thanks for your time!Ollie
  5. What are field tested opinions of the Rycote Suoer Blimp NTG. It is cheaper the the Rode Blimp which is surprising for a Rycote product, and it is considerably cheaper than any other Rycote Blimp. Seems to have everything the other Rycote blimps have such as RF shielded cable, lyre mounts, changeable pistol grip/boompole mount etc. Wondering what the catch is...
  6. I have been using a fur ball wind gag that I got from Rick Patton in Vancouver (RIP Rick) a number of years ago. It's a combo of fur and foam and pops directly over the CMC much like a regular pop filter. This rig works well for fast interior moves and is ok for outside use with winds up to say 10 mph. I'd like to be able to use a similar rig with better wind protection and am looking at the Rycote Baby Ball Gag but have a few questions. Is this rig still usable when the GVC swivel is added between capsule and pre amp as in will the gag interfere with the mount and does it fit securely on the actual swivel? Will it still provide good protection in winds 20-30 mph? I have a couple of exterior sets where the swivel is necessary (under front porch of house ) and interior barn with open doors and relativley low ceiling. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
  7. UPDATE: Just wanted to set the record straight on this one. I swapped out my WS-1 for the non ZLM one, so the lyres are now stiffer and it now works fine. I now think that the funny ringing might have been some weird combination of my boom pole, the lyres and the basket all being in sympathetic resonance. I would like to say that the 8060 WS-1 combo is really fantastic. The basket is just a great size, and the mic is basically just like a 416 but nice and short and with a better wider sweet spot. I tested the WS-1 fur in high wind the other day and it works great. I'm very happy. I would say however that I wouldn't but the ZLM version. It's unnecessary as you can fit a short XLR in a normal kit just fine. Con box is not worth the money. Cheers Chris 'So I received my Rycote kit 1 MZL basket for my new 8060 and just thought I'd make an observation. I know this has been mentioned before but just wanted an opinion. So, with the basket removed, there is almost no handling noise. With the basket on, there is an awful amount of low frequency handling noise. If you flick the basket, and watch carefully you can see it ringing like a bell. This is clearly amplifying the handling noise. All this indicates that the lyres work well, but the basket is the problem....... I imagine this goes away once you add the fur, but I just wondered if anyone had a trick for dampening the basket a little? What I'm going to try tomorrow is to buy one of those stick on car deadening panels and cut a thin strip off it, then stick it inside in a kind of spiral running inside the basket. I'll let you know how it goes obvs.... maybe this could be something which Rycote could 'build in' in future versions.... PS. I know you can remove the handling noise with LF cuts, and that if I were any good as a sound recordist, I wouldn't have handling noise etc. blah blah.... etc etc... UPDATE: I tried the fur makes almost no difference, so damping the basket won't work it seems...'

  9. I've been happily using my Rycote Invision mount for a couple years now with much satisfaction. However the internal coiled cable on my Ktek pole has developed a short right where I usually tuck the exterior portion into the cable management hook on the Invision mount. I'm just wondering if anybody else has experienced this issue and attribute the short to the cable management hook? If it's a problem for multiple people them maybe it's something that might need to be brought to Rycotes attention. Of course it could be that the cable has a short for no other reason than continual use. Matt
  10. Now the proud owner of a cinela pianissimo, thought others may be interested to see a comparison with rycote windshields. FWIW, the cinela pianissimo is roughly the same size as the rycote AE stereo windshield. Will report on performance in the next few weeks as I only picked it up yesterday!   11. Hello, has anyone here tried to put their own coiled cable into a rycote boompole without one? The construction seems almost the same. I only need the cable and cut the hole in the bottom. Also - any tips on sourcing coiled cable? Thanks, Jonas

  13. Hi all, I've been a lurker here for quite a while and have even bought gear from a member, but this is my first post. Here goes! I have an MKH8040 and a MKH30 that I want to use in an M/S configuration. I'd like to get a Rycote stereo windshield kit for it but I'm a bit lost as to which. I'm familiar with their modular windshield kits for single mono mics, but have never worked with their stereo kits. The Rycote website is not too helpful, as my configuration is not listed in their guide (http://www.rycote.com/images/uploads/compatibility_charts/Stereo_Microphone_List-October_2010.pdf). I'll probably stop by Trew Audio in the next couple of days, but in the meantime I was wondering if anybody has experience with this particular combo -- is there a way to make it work with a Rycote stereo kit?   14. Are the lyre shockmounts in the Rycote Softie grip able to comfortably hold a mic with a plugon transmitter on the end? You can with the old 'rubber doughnut' style, but I'm wondering if the lyres might bend too far or bounce about with the weight of the transmitter. I know this setup isn't ideal, but it can be useful for ENG (to put a mic at a podium, etc), and attaching the plugon to the end of the handle doesn't work if it is being attached to a stand. Chris
  15. Okay, believe me I do realize this is probably a moot point, but since I dont have much experience in this field I wanted to consult those that did before I make this swap. I just purchased a Rycote WindShield Kit 4 from B&H for my Sennheiser MKH-416 and as Im sure you all know it comes with the standard Grey WindJammer (Dead Cat, etc). Now, where I have intentions of shooting will mostly be in dimly lit areas, large warehouses (for which I might not even use the 416), or outdoors at night, around working artists who probably wont appreciate any distractions. So I was thinking that a black WindJammer might be just that little bit less distracting and hopefully help lower the possibilities of the artists from getting annoyed with the booming. I contacted Rycote and one of their resellers is okay with swapping my new Grey WindJammer for a black one for free, so cost is a wash. I will probably also do the same for my Rycote Baby Ball Gag WindJammer if a black one is available. The question is, is there any reason I may be missing that is something I should be considering by going with a black WindJammer over a Grey? Dirt? Heat Absorption? Etc? Also Im assuming the quality of the two would be the same. Basically this: To this: Thanks guys and hope this isnt too stupid of a question.
