Dpa microdot repair

First experience of a short in a dpa factory microdot connector. Definitely Curious what others do - i would prefer to stay microdot if possible. Sorry dont recall this being discussed n didnt find in search if i missed it i apologize - do dpa or dealers offer microdot re-termination? 2nd thought was commit to lemo. I am done doing these myself so either way i would send it off

Interesting. I have been thinking how good the microdot system holds up. A resaller advised me to go with LEMO3 and even offered a retermimstion for free if buying new. They had their full line up of in-house made converters from lemo3 to everything else that they seemed to believe in better than microdot. 

 

The pair of 4060s I managed to get was terminated to LEMO3, so I went that path. What sucks is when the connector breaks, it's quite costly to repair and it can't be done yourself. I wonder how a microdot usually breaks and if you need a specialist and how the repair cost compares. Is there any experience whether a Lemo3 or microdot can withstand more abuse in terms of pulling the cable?

I had some cable problems on several of my DPA 4066 close to the microdot connector and asked the leading supplier if I could order the microdot repair kit. 

But was told it was quite a challenge to do it myself and was asked to send them in instead for them to look at as they had all needed equipment and skills. 

 

A few days later all three 4066 was returned to me with refitted microdot connectors. 

I asked for the invoice which was not included in the shipment and was simply told it’s in the mail. 

 

Two days later I got it and it read something like:

3x Microdot repair and replacement, 0,-

 

They had repaired them all, free of charge.

 

DPA might appear expensive but they certainly are affordable in the long run. 

 

From now on I make sure the cables are looped and zipped to the strain relief itself to avoid any unnecessary stress to them. It have worked very well.

I have had DPA replace the microdot for me in the past.  They were fast and easy to deal with.

For me personally the flexibility of microdot outweighs the somewhat delicate nature. I really like the ability to switch between xlr zax n lectro with the same mic at any time just by swapping adapters with minimal bulk. I try to handle delicately but i knew it couldnt last forever. Just glad to know they can be repaired. Will report back if any issues i figured best to go to the source

I have a few 4060s terminated to Lemo 3 and while delicate and have had a few repairs, Kortwich has literally repaired these issues in 10 minutes. They explained that if they use microdot, they could not reuse the connector and would have to use a new one which is an additional 25 euros. 3.5mm is such a pleasure to work with in comparison as it is cheap and can be re-terminated by oneself.

 

Now I have a few additional 4060s with microdot and I am having some issues at the connector. I have only one microdot adapter so far (the official DPA one to 3.5mm), so I cant compare with another. Is it common to have problem with the adapter itself? The reason I am asking is because I would love to stay microdot if possible to change adapters and use various colors for both my SK2000 sets and G3, but I am hesitating to invest in more adapters and potentially re-terminating them.

You mean like the DAD6003 MicroDot - Lemo Adapter? Then no, in my experience it’s not very common at all. My most common issue with DPA mics happens a few centimetres higher in the bit they reinforced. But generally speaking I have very few issues and I have only MicroDot lavs. 
Actually, I did have one TA5 adapter for Lectro fail...

In my case it is the one for 3.5mm, Dad6034 I believe. I believe it is the mics themselves, but I would like to verify by using another adapter (some got better connection when unscrewing the adapter slightly sometimes). 

 

Good to hear about your experience tho. It is appealing to stay microdot as I have mixed wireless. You are based in Germany too right? Where have you sent your dpas for microdot repair?

I wanted DPA to reterminate my mmp-gs cables with microdot (the cable was damaged just above the connector) and they wouldn't. Just a data point.  The charge to NOT reterminate my cables was more than $50 per cable as a diagnosis fee.  I'd sent them pictures of the damage before hand.

Does anyone know someone who would?

I did have Trew Audio in Atlanta reterminate 2x lavs for me with microdot and it works great. I imagine the Nashville location could do it for you as well. Or other dealers that offer custom cables if you might prefer.
