I was doing a test recording before starting a short film and noticed that different pieces of equipment read different sizes for the same file, the smaller the file, the smaller the change. This was happening to all my files, even though I wasn't making any changes to them. As an example, a stereo BWF file 11 minutes and 15 secs was: -194 MB on my Tascam HD P2 recorder -185 MB on my PC computer after a firewire transfer from the HD P2 -189 MB on a DVD-R after being burned on my computer -190 MB on Protools v.7.3.1 at the post house -185 MB on Final Cut Pro v.5.1.4. at the post house Again, there was no editing or processing of the file inbetween readings, e…

Preliminary info at: www.fostexinternational.com/news. The 606 appears to be an upgraded version of the PD-6 and the 204 is their 2 track unit. Eric

Hey Scott--I recall you mentioning doing some bag-work with an SD recorder and a DVDRAM drive. How did it work out w/ the drive being moved around while burning? thanks Philip Perkins

I'm curious if PD-6 owners have any worries about the continued availability of the Maxell DVD-RAM media used in this machine? Also, has Fostex released any kind of statement regarding a continued commitment of service and/or availability of parts? Tim

I often see the term reliability come up when reading threads here and elsewhere that are comparing various recording systems. Here is a brief run down of some of the recorders that I have used so far, and my experiences with them. NAGRA IV series: - Never "lost" a take. - Had the same nervous moments that everyone has probably experienced while watching the lid fill up with tape that should have been winding onto the take up reel. - Turned in some pretty inferior sound while dealing with Quantagy's slitting issues (while Quantagy was blaming our machines). FOSTEX PD-2: Worked well for the most part, but towards the end of it's life (which seemed short relativ…

If everyone could chime in...I have a DV824 and a 744T. I like the combination because I can turn in DVD-RAM or DVD-R. I power both with 4-pin 12v. They fit neatly in my rack-style vertical cart. And I already own them both! I also own an iBook, which is almost always on the cart, as well as a 350G hard drive and a DVD burner. So I am thinking that with an investment of $300 for boom recorder and $500 for the Motu 8pre or $1000 for the Motu 896HD, I can give up the DV824 (maybe get $4500 for it), and put the $3000 to other good use. I have several friends on Boom Recorder, and have filled in using it a few times. It worked well, and has some cool features. So…

Every day I read more and more about how Flash (solid state) storage is becoming a viable alternative to hard drives, etc. Take a look at this product at: < http://www.addonics.com/products/flash_memory_reader/adsahdcf.asp > for adapting compact flash in place of hard drives Regards, Jeff Wexler

I browse Ebay all the time looking for good deals, or rare tools that might be handy at some point. I've been looking at lectros there, and saw this tid-bit in a listing for a 190: "Lectro 190's are tougher, more bullit proof wireless than their Lectro 195 big brothers since they use narrow band deviation or bandwidth." Does this seem to be true, anyone have any real info on this? Thanks, Tom

I have an HHB Portadat with TC for sale. It's been sitting for the last year, so I've decided to sell it. It work great and I have the power supply for it. Let me know, I’d like $1000.00 for it, but make me an offer. morrowsound76@hotmail.com Thanks Steve Morrow

I just purchased an R-09 recorder to use at my daughter's wedding tomorrow. I wanted a small recorder to use in conjunction with the recordings that will be made to the video camera my son will be shooting. So far, I am REALLY IMPRESSED with this little device. Full professional support (48K, 24-bit .wav file format as well as others all the way down to mp3) to SD card (up to 2gb which will yield about 110 minutes in stereo at 48k - 24-bit). It will take an EXTERNAL Mic in or EXTERNAL Line in (but not both simultaneously) and it has 2 built in microphones which are surprisingly good. Manual recording GAIN control and a decent AGC. The recorder is really easy to use and…

Hi everyone, Anyone here used the CSS-5? I am using it on a project (supplied by the production company) and I was wondering if it is suitable as a replacement for a typical mono boom-mic. -Jason

Hi, Is anyone using a SoundDevices MM1 into a Lectro 400 transmitter for w. boom? I was planning to use a phantom box plus a monitor box for this (to listen to both the mic boom and a walkie for communication with sound mixer) but I know some are using the MM1 for this task. I see the MM1 has pretty large gain increments (0, 18, 36... dB) It would be better to control gain at the MM1 than at the Lectro TX since it's knob is not intended for continous readjusting (small and near a connector), letting the Lectro at maximum gain (since it is, iirc, an attenuator) and then adjusting gain at the MM1, but then you jump from 18dB to 36dB of gain... so I w…

Hi, Has anyone seen any innovative technology that would allow me to mount a CSS-5 on an HDCAM? I am looking at the K-Tek K-BWS, and it seems to be the best solution, but the only suspension that I can find is the Rycote. Any other smaller, or more compact options? The big concern is camera-operator complaints (mostly handheld shooting in tight quarters) -Jason

Hey everyone, I'm taking a survey and input on what everyone is using for a backup. I am recording with a Deva V and recorded with a Deva II for five years. Using a PD 4 or an HHB as a backup. I currently use my last PD 4 as a backup. (I sold my Deva II). What does everyone like? I have considered 744 or Boom Recorder. Any thoughts? I want to leave DAT behind!!! Thanks Whit Norris

So I'm prepping for an upcoming gig, where i can use my newly acquired Cameo mixer. I got a DB 25 break out cable and hooked it up to my 744t xlr digi ins, but no signal shows up at the recorder. However if i hook up the AES mix outs of the mixer, the signal shows up. I've made a few calls and the concensus is that the voltage of the direct outs isn't high enough for the 744t. Has anyone else had this problem ?

Is anyone using this feature with the TRX910 or 910AA? Possible gig coming up were this feature might be a viable solution. Any thoughts would be great! Thanks

I thought i would treat myslef to an early Christmas present, and picked up a pair of Ultrasone 750 headphones. I brought them home and listened to some music and was blown away with there performance. I was hearing things I had never heard before in recordings. But today i used them on a documentary gig, and I don't know if they are suited for production work. It seemed like i really needed to crank the volume to hear properly. They seemed almost to "open" for lack of a better word, to really hear the detail of dialog. Do i just need time to get used to them, or should i go back to the 7506's ? Looking for anyone else out there that uses Ultrasones for production work.
