I’ve run into a couple of problems with the Hawk-Woods power distribution system when used with Lecrtosonics wireless mics, wondering if anyone else has had the same. The first was when powering an SD442, Lecrtosonics receivers (any type) and Lectrosonics 400 series transmitters. This was for a series I outfitted that was shot on an aircraft carrier. When we were setting up the gear one of the soundmen, Gabe Monts, noticed right away that the signal to noise was terrible on the 400 series when used as camera hops. They were OK when battery powered but terrible when powered by the Hawk-Woods. We were told by Lectrosonics that the grounding circuitry was differe…

Opinions? I'm thinking about this or a cooper 106. I've used a cooper for the past 11 years now I need to purchase a board.

I want to build a starquad boom cable system with stereo HP, talkback, and xlr with a box on one end and breakout on the other. I know you can buy these systems, but I'm considering building my own. Any opinions?

I have started new topic here to address the whole area of recording directly to a computer: laptop, Mac Mini, PC (or whatever anybody else comes up with). I recognize that ALLthe digital recording devices we use are "computers" but this topic will be able to focus on those setups that typically use a personal computer running a mainstream OS and appropriate software. I thank Darren for posting the images of his cart with a full Metacorder setup using the MOTU Traveler and the Yamaha Mixer. We can all look forward to some interesting discussions of this method of working. I hope as well we can get those who are using BoomRecorder on board here as there will be a fair amou…

I have been building a computer based solution with Boom Recorder. My problem is: I cannot control the input levels going into Boom Recorder short of using the little trim knobs on the front of the 896. Do you also run a mixer in front of the interface? I am interested in how those of you using this or a similar solution handle this. Cheers, Adam Rabinowitz Sound for Film & Video www.soundfilmvideo.com

I have a 442, 3x 411a's, 744, in a Pertrol Pegz1. Mixer/744/411's front to back. I am getting RF indication on the 411's from the 744. Mainly from the block 26's (x2). The frequency scan shows 1 to 3 RF "pixels" along the bottom, everywhere, more where there is normal RF. When I power down the 744 and restart the 411's for another sweep, everything is normal. I know alot of you guys have this same setup(except for block assignment perhaps). What are you doing to keep this from happening? I've tried swapping 442 and 744 but cables won't fit. Is there anything you can put between the 744 and 411's? Is this minor RF that won't effect me much? It seems most prevelant on bloc…

Production sound rigs have certainly become more baroque during my time working (early 1970s on). I mentioned in an earlier thread that when I started, FILM sound done on location was a very different field than VIDEO or MUSIC sound done mostly in studios (video was too much of a hassle to use on location for much in those days). The gear was very different, the people were very different and the expectations quite different as well. Now all location audio is more like video and music audio--much more equipment intensive, and much more complex. In the late 1970s there was no such thing as an audio mixer designed to be worn over the shoulder--that kind of portable aud…

Hi everyone, Discovered the T.H.E. microphones recently, and have been hearing all sorts of claims about them (most notably that they cost way less than a Schoeps mk41 but approach it in terms of performance)... I also heard you used them on Samurai - is that true Jeff? Or just internet rubbish? Id be keen to hear what you folks think, as I cannot afford a Schoeps, but the T.H.E. fits in perfectly right now...

I currently use my FR2 as a back up recorder, only because back up recorders have become somewhat of a standard here in LA. Sadly, I have to copy the days work on to some sort of media at the end of the day using a stand alone burner or laptop computer. I wonder how many more machines these manufacturers would sell if they had mirroring ability. If there was a machine out there that did this, I'd dump the one I've got...and buy it today. It seems that some manufacturers are coming out with new machines, like the 702, and not addressing the most basic of needs...delivering the media in widely accepted format. Am I the only one really frustrated by this situation…

I had one of those "oh my god, I'm not rolling situations today". Yes, it happens every once in a great while. I hit the bell, light, metadata, slate, record, blah...blah, 80 to 100 times a day, and it's bound to happen. When we had Nagra and DAT, there was always the confidence delay of the headphone return that gave us the warm fuzzy that we were recording. I'd love to see an option in our HD recorders, CF recorders, and whatever...that would give a short beep tone in the headphone feed when we go into record. Just a little audible message that things are going down... Any thoughts on this before I send this to the DEVA newsgroup? Thanks!

This is one of the highest capacity "jump drive" style flash storage I have seen. Seems to be well packaged and reasonably well priced. USB 2.0 http://www.westerndigital.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=226 Regards, Jeff Wexler

Sound Devices has announced two new 2-track recorders, the 702 and 702T, that use flash card storage. Apparently the electronic specs are the same as SD's other 7-series recorders. This means that Sound Devices is producing an alternative to the FR-2 and the Tascam HD-P2. Unlike the Tascam, the 702T can be used to jam time code. The price for the 702T is apparently about two and a half times the street price of the Tascam.

Is the VRT available? Is there any improvement in performance with a Venue system (VRS RX) and 200-series TX over using the 200 series RX? Lectro told me (I'm probably the last to know) that the Venue adds delay to the analog TX signal to align it with the delay of a 400 series TX with in the system, allowing one to mix TXs w/ having different delays. Cool. Any real-world VRT vs VRS experience? Philip Perkins

I've asked over on RAMPS but being the thread killa that I am I guess my question got lost or overlooked. Anyone have an opinion on the Sanken CS3e? How does it compare to a mkh 60? or 416? Larry Long

I recently traded a couple of emails with Larrry Fisher at Lectro regarding the Venue System and the possibility of a remote interface. The unit can be remotely monitored by the LecNet software, however this require the use of a Laptop or PC, running Windows. My thoughts are more on the lines of a remote interface with the LCD screen and buttons only. This will allow for the rack to be placed anywhere on the cart, not necessarily in the line of sight. Larry spoke with his engineers and they gave the quick determination that the interface would cause too much RF. However, I have seen remote interfaces for many products in the audio world, and they seem to work. It …

I have a Sennheiser MKH50 that seems to conduct a large amount of handling noise. When on a pole I always have the low frequency roll off engaged, but I still have to use quite a bit of mixer roll off as well. I use the shockmout that comes with it and he mic still sounds good, but I'm just wondering if there are any other experiences like this.

I've used the Zaxcom TX with Sound devices, Cooper, mackie, Allen-Heath, and Midas mixes with great results, but I know that the RFI bleed can be a problem with others like the Wendts. I even had a problem using it with the DEVA V once. So does it work well with the Cantar? Any experiences would be greatly appreciated. Cheers, Austin Storms

Looking for a new mic

I'm having trouble deciding on a new mic to get. I was looking into the Sennheiser ME66/K6 shotgun mic, but I've been hearing some good things about the Oktava MC-012, and I don't know if I'm ready to sink $500 into a mic at this point due to my weak financial status at the moment. Alot of my recording will be in an uncontrolled environment where there's definitely going to be alot of external noise due tot he fact that I'm working on low-budget student films at the moment that can't get roads or businesses to close so we can shoot, so the directionality of the mic is very important. Think that the Sennheiser is the best mic I can get for my money, or is there somethin…

Too late... Got sucked into yet another ebay vortex and when spat out the backside found I owned a pair of CMC6 XTs. After the fact I did some more serious research, but most everything I found was really dated...back to '03-'04 when they first came out and were new and novel. Anyone have real working production data to offer? From all I can tell they aren't quite as flat as other CMC curves, but have a slight high end boost of 2-3 dB beginning at about 8 or 9 kHz up to 20kHz and then do a weird dip/bump above that to acheive the slated 40kHz target. I know we humans can't "hear" any of that high-end stuff, but maybe there is some ultrasonic vibe to consider...? Som…

In the near future, I"m going to have to take the step into purchasing a HD recorder. I've narrowed it down to 744t or a Metacorder setup due to budget. I would like to focus on doing features, but I don't want to end up limiting myself from other possibilities. Does anyone on a daily basis find themselves using more than 4 tracks at a time?

Hi all, I'm starting to plan out my next round of purchases (yes, I'm always dreaming ahead... ;-). I'm curious to see what everyone things...looks like I can get a well equiped used Deva 2 for around the same price as a new SD744. Presuming the Deva 2 is in excellent condition, what do you all recommend? Right now I don't do a lot of bag work, so that is less of a consideration right now (does anyone carry a Deva in a bag?). If I was looking at a Deva 4 or 5, the answer would be obvious, but that is still out of my budget range. Thanks! Phil Talsky

Phil Talsky posted some info on possible future upgrades to the Editrol R-4. His post follows: Speaking of Edirol, has anyone heard anything more about the upgrade to the R4? Supposedly they are adding TC and other big enhancements at roughly the same price as the current R4...(at least this is what I heard at DV Expo). Thanks! Phil I owned an R-4 when it first came out and it had a few design limitations for my liking and so I didn't keep it. Since then, several new machines have come out that could be considered direct competition to the R-4 (the R-4 seeming to fall somewhat out of favor). I had heard also that Editrol would announce some feature upgrade…
