  1. You can save some money by getting good used gear. A used SD 302 goes for about $900 ... sometimes less if you shop around. Also, consider the Sennheiser MKH 415 and 416t ... both as good as a new 416, but "T" power instead of 48v phantom. Shop around. I see the 415 go for $400 or less on occasion, and it's a GREAT sounding mic. The only issue you could have is that newer mixers can't power these mics, but the SD302 and the SD442 as well as the Wendt and PSC all provide "T" power.
  2. Perhaps this is a discussion we need to be having with OUR union? I feel like all department heads SHOULD be equal, but you know, camera department is the most important department on set ... at least that's what they tell me.
  3. Well, If you don't like Area Standards why not negotiate a better rate for yourself and your crew? Even us knuckle gragging grips negotiate on rate. If you don't like the rate, don't take the job. Area standards is just a minimum.
  4. I can't wait to see Apple's idea of TV. And to use a recent computer idiom, perhaps it's time for USA 2.0?
  5. If only they would. Last I checked Apple had more cash in the bank than the government. And no debt.
  6. We should have to demonstrate proficiency on the machines. Instead we listen to a guy read from a manual for a couple of hours and get a card saying we took the class. For a few years, about 25 years ago, I worked in lumber warehouses and I used to unload trucks all day with a forklift. Actually a few different forklifts with different sizes and capacities. I have run a lot of them on smooth pavement in warehouses and on rough surfaces on construction sites. I know about load capacity, height vs. load, tipover angles, etc. The classes were a joke.
  7. I have taken the high lift and forklift training classes. They were offered by 478, but I can't recall ever being asked to show proof on any show. The courses felt like nothing more than an attempt to remove liability from production.
  8. Everyone is being very tight-lipped about this accident. I heard about it the afternoon it happened, but was told nothing more than the person involved. He was working at striking the set, so not many people were around. Some reports say it was a condor, some say a scissor lift, that fell over. Read a report that said he fell out of the machine, so don't know the real story yet. The accident happened on NASA property (they were shooting at Michaud where the shuttle tanks were built). It is a holiday weekend, so noone is answereing phones. This is the most complete story I have seen so far, and it still has no real details of what happened: http://www.nola.com/movies/index.ssf/2011/11/gi_joe_film_crew_member_killed.html Please be careful out there.

    4 Channel Recorders

Do these vehicles also have a camera in them? How about a SD Pix 240? Run camera and sound to the recorder.
  10. It will depend on what has been stipulated in the contract between both parties. Have you signed a contract saying this is a work for hire? Did that contract stipulate pay rate? If they didn't pay what was stipulated in the contract then that is a breach of contract and the contract can't be enforced on their end. At least that's how I understand it. Have you been here? http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ09.pdf There is a phone number at the end of this page that you can call and ask for clarification.
  11. I suspect all of these digital recorders sound great with a line level signal. I know the H4n digital recordings are as clean as the 702 when using a 302 as the front end, at least to the ear. I own both and have compared the recordings side by side. Obviously the H4n and 702 are in different leagues feature wise, but both sound the same when fed a quality line level signal.
  12. My petrol bag came with a padded cup boom pole holder thing. It is supposed to hang from the harness, or something like that, I never used it. The bag also has velcro loops for securing a pole across the top. I have used them.
  13. I guess you aren't supposed to move your head while recording?
  14. You would record room tone any time the conditions in the room change significantly, and yes, even scene to scene if necessary. Number of people, number of cameras, whether or not door are open or closed, etc. can all change the sound of a room. And if your are using it to fill in between dialog edits, the room tone should be a recording of how the room sounded while the cameras were running. Remember, digital cameras these days have fans that start and stop during use. This also changes the sound in your room.
  15. Like most, I've used the sony7506 for years on location and in the studio. I tried the Sennheiser HD 280 and ... I really like them. I bought them as a cheap second set and found myself using them more and more. They are a little bulky, but the isolation is really good. They seemed a little tight on my head at first but they loosened up after a day of use, and the sound is less harsh to me than the 7506. I had a driver fail on one side and it was fixed by Sennheiser unnder wareanty.
  16. I'm in the market for a new recorder. Been following these Nomad threads pretty close. The simulator sounds like a great idea, but I'm also one of those without a PC ... so I guess I'll just have to wait for a review from actual users. Oh, I did actually see a PC used on a movie set, once. It belonged to the accounting department.
  17. I had this feeling hit me yesterday. Every time I hear Elton John's "Benny and the Jets" I seem to go back to backyard camp outs with my brother and some friends. There were always 3 or 4 of us staying up too late reading comic books and Popular Mechanics magazine and telling scary stories by flashlight ... in a pup tent. Always with the latest tunes playing on a pocket transistor radio.
  18. SOP on the Red cam is to use the internal cards when shooting gunfire, explosions and such. The external drives tend to drop frames when subjected to concussion.
  19. I have complete confidence in flash based media. Haven't had a card failure in 4 years of using them.
  20. Big Pharma also has to pay for many huge lawsuits stemming from side effects caused by drugs that were fast-tracked through FDA approval about 8 or so years ago and not thoroughly studied. Turns out the side effects were worse than the original symptoms these drugs were supposed to cure.
  21. A couple of shows back, crafty handed out metal water bottles with the show's name on it and set up water dispensers around the set. I thought it was a great idea. But many folks thought it was too inconvenient and eventually the bottled water came back. Haven't seen the individually wrapped stuff yet.
  22. I've used Rycote, Sennheiser($$$), PSC, K-Tek, Rode, and AT mounts. Even tried to build something myself. I still have not found one single mount that does everything. I found the Rycote to sag too much, the Sennheiser was good but unbelievably expensive and so were replacement parts. PSC and AT mounts are lightweight, simple and serviceable ... possibly my favorite simple mounts but they dont work well with wind protection. The K-Tek was nice, but was slow/difficult to change mics inside the blimp, and easily broken. The Rode is well madw and works well once set up, but is heavy. I wish Rode made a version with a simple pole mount instead of the big handle. A smaller, lighter cable and XLR on the mic end would also be great, but in all honesty, you get a lot for the money with the Rode blimp.
  23. Very nice line up of carts Jeff. I hope you get to use them soon. I'm looking to build a small cart with the hopes that it will attract larger jobs. My sound jobs, so far, are still out of a bag.
  24. Get your mics where the audience would be. MKH50 would be a good choice if you have them. I think you'll be surprised just how good it will sound. Like some one else posted, just point your shotgun at the action and see what you get. If it sounds good to the audience there's not much reason it won't sound good to your mic in the same spot. If you tried close micing you would have to mic and mix every instrument. Instead, get you mic back from the performance a bit so one instrument won't overwhelm any other.
