  1. 1) It sounds like the mic doing the recording is not actually attached to either of them, so this might have nothing to do with the sound team. 2) Live TV is not controlled like the narrative stuff most of the folks on this board work on. 3) Spies?

    744t Upgrade Path

If you just need the occasional extra channels, 7000 series machines can daisy chain together and be rolled from one machine. I have noticed some good deals lately on 702t and 744t machines. This will make your rig much larger, but that might not be an issue if you are on a cart.
  3. If you can find a table pad there is no need to drill holes in the table to run wires. With a table pad under the table cloth you have both a place to run wires and a method to quiet table noises.
  4. I believe it was Duke Ellington that said, "If it sounds good, it is good."
  5. They are commonly called "crutch tips" or "chair tips" depending on the size.
  6. Once more ... it depends on the device. I have set up many that are precision machined bases with precision bearings, nylon guides, spring bumpers, tension adjustments, etc. I have also seen some that are nothing more than skateboard wheels on a couple of pipes. The good ones are very expensive, and very quiet.
  7. It depends on the device. In my grip and dolly days I set up many that were silent, or at least much quieter than the camera fans.
  8. You can bet he will plead to the court to allow him to work shortly after he gets out. Will probably claim some sort of hardship, inability to provide for his family, yada, yada ...
  9. I put one on a dog. We wanted sounds of the dog barking and whining but all he wanted to do was attack the boom.
  10. Basically, the National Weather service gives names to hurricanes to make them easier to track. They do not name winter storms. The Weather Channel started giving names to winter storms in an effort to increase ratings. They realised their ratings go up when a tropical storm gets a name and they are hoping the same will happen with they give a name to winter storms.
  11. Here's another vote for the MKH 50. If you are patient you can find used ones, but they don't come up very often because folks that have them don't seem to want to get rid of them. Don't forget to budget for shock mount and wind protection.

We saw the movie a couple of weeks ago, and really enjoyed it. Great job to all who were involved.
  13. They don't have timecode, per se. But, didn't I read that they have the ability to set time on one unit and then sync other units to the same time? It isn't frame accurate, but close enough. I suspect that is the "virtual multitrack" part of the equation.

    Live Shot

I was production manager at a Fox affiliate a few years back. They wanted all reporters to shoot their own stories. I can't count the number of times reporters came back with crap audio because they refused to mess up their hair with headphones!
  15. As for the hat, you may not ever wear it again after the event. Get something cheap that will do the job, or get something funky in the spirit of Burning Man and take a pair of scissors to it until the headphones fit. Or, just use in-ears. Some camps can get very loud so you may want some good isolation.
  16. Keep a couple of large garbage bags with you at all times. If the big one hits you can drop your entire rig in the bag and seal it up. Double bag it to be sure. Anything you bring out there that isn't protected will be covered with playa dust. I've been a few times and I would not want to bring good working gear out there. I also wouldn't want to actually "work" at the event.

    New Rode blimp

Let us know how it turns out. The metal rings and rubber bands are pretty heavy. I suspect it would lighten things up a bit to use the lyres. I picked up the original blimp on a sale, but never really needed to use it.

    New Rode blimp

I bought a rode blimp as a backup and always wondered if I could install Rycote lyres in it. I just never used it enough to spend the time on it.
  19. It really depends on the wardrobe. There are some costumes that, for whatever reasons, can not be washed.
  20. The only thing this "controversy" has done is to sell more of their products. Merry Christmas, ya'll!
  21. I would consider getting a SD MixPre, 302 or 442 to put in front of the Zoom, and then save up for a better recorder. There have been a fair number of good mixers on the used market lately. Any of these mixers will serve you well for a long time and make your entire setup much more flexible in the long run. The H4n can sound good with a decent mixer in front of it (I have run a 302 in front of mine). I like the NTG-3. I bought one for a backup, and end up using it a lot more than I thought I would. The Rode blimp is heavier than others, but works fine otherwise. The 744 is a nice machine, but has only 2 mic preamps. That is fine for recording 2 mics and 2 line inputs, but would need additional equipment to use more than 2 mics. The 744 and a 442 would make a very versatile combination.
  22. Cool Theory. I haven't had the problem, and mine is updated to the most current iOS it can run. My 1st gen iPad is slower than newer models, but is as fast as it ever was.
  23. My first generation iPad with 3G works just about as well today as it did when new, except for less battery life (expected for an approx. 4-year-old device). I use it EVERY DAY. The newest iPads are about 8 times faster and have an option for more storage than my current iPad. And the original iPad cannot run the latest iOS, so I am thinking I may upgrade it this year. Worth? It is my main internet and email device, is perfect when travelling and the 3G service has worked without a hitch. Yes, I feel I have gotten my money's worth out of it. I looked at the mini a few times, and I prefer the larger screen of the full sized device.
