  2. Same here - I only use the 1.5 v holsters, and only for non-rechargeable batts -- for the same reason as above. Ditto re: the iPower 9V clips - well made, and they come with the batts. ~tt

  6. So I take it you guys don't use Comteks? Yeah, I really only ever use my UM400's for Boom Op talkbacks and/or camera hop tx's... but I do still use them, and with the Comteks I use regularly, I'm happy to use the iPowers... don't find them cumbersome at all. To each his own : ) ~tt
  7. I still don't get the whole 9V battery thing, Since when did the 9V become such a pariah? Am I missing something? What (if any) are the drawbacks of using 9V's as opposed to AA's? ~tt
  8. Dude, what's your problem with 9V's? Ever compare (size and weight) 2 LiIon AA's to a LiPoly 9V? What's wrong with them? I use BDS systems, so I don't put batteries in my 411's (yes, I still use and absolutely LOVE the range, durability and reliability of these awesome rx's) but if I were to use them with internal batteries, I really don't see what the issue is. Also, UM400's were designed and released WHEN? Some of your gripes are tantamount to complaining to Ford Motor Company for the shortcomings of the Taurus, or GE for their design / version of the rotary dial telephone. Wait, sorry, it was actually Almon B. Strowger, an undertaker in Chicago who designed the first rotary dial phone... but the point remains: Step away from the soldering iron, go outside and breathe. ~tt

  10. Maybe you didn't read my first post - in any case, I'm fully aware that there are choices in life. I grew up in L.A., completely enamored by the film business from the moment a crew showed up on my block decades ago. Perhaps that's why I wound up in the business anyway despite the fact that I moved out of L.A. as a teen. There are parts of SoCal I absolutely love (and miss)... having a family, and trying to negotiate life's challenges with and for them makes it a little more complicated than the simple "then move there" solution you advocate. I understand it worked out fairly well for you, Mr. Hensley, and kudos to you for that - it shows initiative and bravery; a calculated risk. Believe me, I'm calculating - and if I ever reach a point in my career where I feel my family will be better served by such a migration / homecoming, rest assured it will happen ; ) ~tt

  12. the show I'm on right now is one perpetual "roll-hearsal"... it's aggravating - especially when I'm trying to mix a 4-page scene with 7 speaking roles. It rarely produces anything screen-worthy, and doesn't really help us make our day any more efficiently. The one good side to it is that I can instruct my boom ops to be very liberal, knowing that when on the rare occasion, they break frame, it's much more easily forgiven as no one has seen the shot(s) prior to the roll. It is frustrating, but as mentioned above, it all pays the same. I do aspire to eventually be mixing a show that has a better budget, lower page count, and a more "traditional" approach to capturing moments that have been more carefully sculpted and crafted, but until then I'm doing this - and getting paid for it just the same. I've actually created a pseudonym for such jobs when asked how I want to be "credited": ~Mort Orecchio
  13. I think, to be a cop - anymore - requires a "soldier" mentality - the crux is that one must be a soldier both for and against his/her fellow citizens simultaneously. This, coupled with the fact that most cops are exposed on a daily basis to the uglier side of human nature, makes everyone a suspect - everyone a liar. It definitely takes a certain "breed" of human to undertake such a (thankless?) job - and the propensity for one to quickly become jaded against (just about everyone) is exceptionally high - perhaps only higher for soldiers? Perhaps term limits would help? Dude had a gun (the fact that it was later revealed to be an Airsoft gun really carries little weight.). Were the police overzealous? Possibly... probably... Either way, it's a fucking tragedy, and Bryce Dion is not continuing his life on this plane of existence. This incident will certainly (hopefully?) bring about some kind of positive change for the future. ~tt

  15. You're absolutely right Jeff. My idealism sometimes gets the best of me. I'm actually one of those people who "benefit" from the incentive program in my state - to a degree. I'm thankful to be on the tail end of a scripted episodic production shooting in my home town this season - it's been fairly lucrative. I just can't help but "fantasize" a bit about what my rate might be on this thing if it was the same rate mixers are getting in L.A. or NYC... Not complaining though. Like everyone here, I just want to work and provide for my family. I jokingly refer to myself as a "carny with dental" when asked what I do for a living, but all in all, it beats a desk job, hands down. I'm grateful to be doing what I love - wherever it takes me : ) ~tt

It's ridiculous - and I would think somewhat insulting (it is for me, anyways) to know the only (or main) reason I got a job was because the ASA essentially says I'm worth less than a mixer who lives in L.A. State incentive programs just seem to reinforce the idea. And then to force that on a production - basically telling them who they have to hire... it just doesn't seem right. Anyhow, I'm reminded of this: Maybe when EVERY state has an incentive program, then they'll all agree to "disarm" and go back to how it used to be: you shot where you shot because that's where the story took place... you hire who you want to hire because they're who you want to hire. ~tt
  17. Shouldn't people be able to hire whoever the hell they want to hire? I know in some ways this type of rhetoric is fuel on the fire, but when it comes down to it, I would certainly take issue with someone telling me who I can or can't hire - especially if it's simply based on where that person chooses to call home. I've been on both sides of that coin at various times - having grown up in L.A., and then moving to the NW prior to starting my career as a Soundie... either way, I just think people should be able to hire whoever they want for the job. ~tt
