Deity TC-1

Thinking of switching from the Ultrasync Ones to Deity TC-1, mainly because of their slate and some of the improvements to usability, like the clever mounting, built in scratch mic and minijack connector. I normally work on commercials and having reliable gear that doesn't mess up is a big thing for me. Does anyone here have experience with the TC-1? Would you trust a company like Deity for reliable gear?

I've got some to play around with.  They haven't been out long enough to judge reliability, and I haven't fully put them through their paces.  I did notice that it autodetected the wrong frame rate a couple times and I had to re-jam (it guessed 24FPS from a 23.98 source).

In my opinion... Deity haven't really proven themselves of consistent quality as of yet.

Their premium lavs sound good and work flawlessly, definitely a good backup lav.

Their 2.4ghz wireless system had quite a bit of teething problems regarding RF quality and recording functions.

Their shotguns are okay sounding, but nothing really that I'd consider using outside of a videography sense.

I'd really wait to see how people find it.

For reliability I'd probably suggest the Ambient system though.

I pre-ordered one and have used it a couple of times.  I use it for SLR cameras since it has the microphone that records a scratch track and the mini cable included.

One thing that I found very annoying is that you cannot access the TC Menu unless you have the unit in "Master" mode.  Coming from the Denecke JB-1 where I leave it in auto jam all the time, I found this little hurdle troublesome since they didn't even mention it in their tutorial video.  Deity did respond quickly though when I made that comment on their you tube video, but they haven't corrected the video to include that information.

Their bluetooth connectivity and app is nice, but I don't think you see any real time saving advantages unless you are using all TC-1's.  Also, you will need an extra TC-1 in order to jam your recorder.  In my current workflow, I jam all of my Denecke JB-1s with my Sound Devices recorder and distribute the TC boxes to the cameras.

A bonus for me is that Denecke is within the greater LA area and when I had a problem with a JB-1 they serviced it that day and got it back to me within hours.

Also, with the Deity TC-1, I've experienced nowhere near the battery life that they claim.  I have to make sure that the TC-1 is charged every night or I risk the unit dying during the shoot day.  The Denecke JB-1's I typically charge after 5 days of shooting even though they might not need it.

I recently received the Deity TC-SL1 slate and a 3 pack of TC-1's. Haven't been able to spend too much time with them yet, but so far everything seems thoughtfully designed and well built. The app was a little finicky at first, but nothing too concerning – I'm really excited about remote control of my timecode system on set.

I used the tc-1s on set for the first time yesterday. They seemed to work fine. I had no issues with power and it was a 12hr day.  I left them on cameras and they had plenty of battery left. It is nice to be able to monitor via app, and have a screen on boxes. I did pick up a straight 5pin lemo cable for arri alexa mini LF but the right angle worked, although close to sdi 1 output. I don’t recall if the sdi 1 output was utilized. I also have a jb-1, but it was in the shadows for jamming two more cameras that miraculously appeared. I enjoy the app, but I haven’t compared the app to tentacle’s app.  It’s been a while since I’ve used those. I was able to sync all boxes via app. I left two boxes on cameras and one on my recorder. The shoe mount was handy as I was able to mount with some accessories. My only complaint are those bright yellow cables.

Agreed,  I did not mention that the included shoe mount is very handy.  However, some of the camera guys I work with use the shoe mount for a monitor.  Then I have to velcro the TC-1 to the camera body.

The camera had side brackets and a handle. I was able to get some cold shoe receivers and add them to the brackets. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1607255-REG/tilta_ta_csr_b_cold_shoe_receiver_attachment.html  Also my camera hops had shoes with 1/4 20 on them.  https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1593279-REG/smallrig_2065b_7_inch_articulating_arm.html. This allowed me to get to camera hops easily. I didn’t have to touch the tc-1 because I can monitor via camera and app. Maybe this will help some. Also a simple thread adapter would work as the tc-1 has a 1/4 20 on the bottom of the shoe.

I have 3 tentacles and just love them. AC's and camera ops do too. Low profile/weight and can tuck just about anywhere on camera. App is solid and they hold a charge for 24 plus hours easily. And .... they charge in about an hour or so from dead. Really NO complaints at all.

I'd be hard pressed to counter any of @Allen Williams' findings. I guess if in my situation a) I'm already steeped in the TS ecosystem b) deneke smart slates are under that price on the secondhand market c) I'm still miffed by the lack of Deity customer service from their last line of products, along with d) some of their oversights uncovered from their last generation, I would therefore remain with the trusted contenders. and perhaps e) bluetooth isn't the essential manner in which I sync or confirm my TC over the course of the day.

Sometimes it's a matter of which designer's development cycle you are on-board with. Sound show rooms such as Trew and Gotham do cover bigger companies like zoom, however for many years both zoom and tascam were vying for the same prosumer market. Tascam was the trailing edge manufacturer, but IMHO it was worth holding out for their answer to the zoom releases. (Not these days, however.)

TS could easily release a smart slate or other timecode systems could be developed. I realize that's speculation, but if my consultants and experts are not carrying Deity and cannot in good conscience endorse them, then I'm going on a limb when it comes time to defending my decisions if I don't have that support structure in place.

I just picked up a set of five Deity TC-1 boxes and appropriate cables. These will replace my similar Ultra Sync One kit which seems to be lacking in support from the new distributor, Atomos. So far I am very pleased.

I like the Sidus Audio App which will allow me to sync Time of Day time code quickly and easily to my Scorpio from my iPhone. This is far quicker than setting an approximate time manually on the mixer. I believe my Master Unit will now live in the Scorpio bag and be charged via the USB port, just to have it ready to go all the time. Syncing the other units is a breeze through the app... pretty much a one touch process after turning them all on.

After a couple hours of playing with this new stuff, it is an improvement over the very similar Ultra Sync One.

Cheers,

Tim

I have 5 Tentacles now. They truly have been rock solid for me. They charge extremely fast and a 12 hour day is NO problem(and then some). App has been great and it's awesome to sync all via the app without bothering an AC(who like the low profile for cam). Master lives in my bag and feeds recorder. I own a few Deity products but the Tentacle is a mainstay.

Hi Michael, same as some other guys here, I recommend to wait until others raise more experience with this one. I´m also awaiting more real life THEOS experience as it should come out very soon. There have been lot of suggestions and expectations recently but not enough yet to make a buying decision.

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to share a bug I found on TC-1. User bits set in Sidus Audio app are being output in the reverse order.

For example, if you set UB to yy:mm:dd:uu in the app, TC-1 will output uu:dd:mm:yy. Confirmed with Zoom F8n Pro and Tentacle Sync E.

Not sure if this issue is with the TC-1 or Sidus Audio app.

Did anyone notice this as well?
