For the first time I've had trouble with a file (or perhaps files) recorded to my 702T. There are a couple of relatively unprecedented (for me) variables so it's hard to pinpoint a cause. I purchased two new 4GB Sandisk Ultra II compactflash cards this past weekend and used them on a reality show that demands a lot of uninterrupted rolling, resulting in files that can be as long as an hour in length. When uploading to my mac (via a card reader in the usb slot) errors were reported in both cards. So, instead of selecting all I transferred one file at a time. This appeared to work on all but one file. I then uploaded files to my PC without incident and was able to pla…

Back in February, I sent my sonosax mixer for repair to an independent repairman who I was told by others was fairly reputable. Its now October, and he's not answering any of my phonecalls or text messages. I just want the thing back in my hands. What kind of legal recourse do I have now for getting my mixer back? Any nuggets of wisdom from you guys would be helpful. And no, I dont want to give out his name (yet), for sake of destroying someone's reputation.

Hey guys, I just wanted to check to see if anyone knows when the October 52 meeting is? I passed the test and am on the ballot for the vote in October. I have been getting in touch with union members I know to ask them to attend the meeting, but everyone always asks me when it is. Unfortunately, I am not supposed to know the date of the meeting, which I understand. I would just like to be able to tell others when it is if they ask, to try and get them to attend. Thanks everyone! Phil Rosati (267)975-8439

Attention Everyone!! This just in, with more and more production audio cable duties falling to Cat5 cables and important design flaw is just beginning to surface. Cat5 cables are NOT I repeat NOT gopher proof. Yup I said it gofers poser a real danger. Take this heart breaking story for example: shooting on location in a cornfield somewhere in Iowa. A vicious and unrepentant gopher (Spermophilus) grabbed approximately 1 foot of this innocent cable pulled it into his den and mauled it without warning!

working in freezers

Just did a job where we had to film in a huge freezer about the size of two football fields side by each. Luckily I was able to cable in from the door and could keep the machines outside. My fear was what if the shooting was so deep in the freezer that I couldn't do that and had to go inside with the machines. Would I have problems with them functioning? Also, we would shoot a scene inside the freezer, then, to give the crew a break, they'd shoot a scene outside the freezer, then back inside. I'm sure the condensation would build up and eventually kill something. By the way I was using a 208, fostex 824 and pd-6. The temp was -10 inside. Anyone with experience…

Hello all, I have an inquiry about the attitudes of feature mixers on EPK crews (Behind the scenes); these crews usually work for the studio and not for any network or gossip show (E!, ET, etc). Thanks. G.

I'm wondering, as I'm trying to put together a production of a documentary.... In situations where it is vitally important to keep crew down to an absolute minimum, not necessarily because of budget but because of the nature of the topic being filmed and location it is filmed in, is it insulting or SERVERLY unprofessional to ask the sound mixer to double as a boom operator? A little more info on the nature of the doc... it is going to be filmed in a very strict religious setting, a holy place of worship, where the people are very reluctant to even let us film there, but are allowing us under the circumstance that we have only a certain amount of people... 3 to be ex…

Hello Everyone, I'm putting together a Budget for a TV Documentary that will be pitched to a network. It's kind of the first time I'm doing this. I want to pay the Sound Mixer a fair rate. I'm so suprised at how hard it is to find a straight answer to this question on the internet, the union sites don't seem to have anything. So my question i guess is, how much do UNION sound mixers get paid daily? What would you expect to get paid on a documentary shooting for 15 days for a TV network like discovery or history channel? And while i'm on the topic doesn't anyone know a good place to find this info out for other crew positions like Director of photography, AC…

Names have been changed to protect the innocent: Dear Mr Ince, My name is XXXXXX and I am an up and coming sound person about to graduate from SCAD (The local film school in my town) where I have used the most to date sound gear and the films I have worked on have gotten many students A or B grades on them. I understand that you are the main location sound person in the area. I would love to work for you as a boom op or 2nd mixer. I don't have much professional experience but the student films I have worked on have trained me well. I am willing to work cheaply for you I was thinking like $30.00 an hour which I understand to be on the lower end of the sound pay rate.…

http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/cwg/851951899.html Top notch crew needed! Me and my girlfriend just bought a co-op and to get this job done right we're going to need carpenters, floor guys, electric, wall guys, painters, all with their own tools. We're really looking for people who have a passion for their craft and want the satisfaction of making a really nice place for me and my girlfriend. No pay but the contractor is an award winner and you'll get the chance to work with a top-notch crew and to get your name out there. Also, we have plans to get another co-op once we secure funding so you might get to work on that one as well. Food + credit.

Last Saturday night I responded to what I thought was an example of another bad ad of looking for somebody to work on a festival bound film and only paying in credit. I mocked the post by writing about wanting to paint a house for free to also enter in a contest. Guess it was a real post for a job because the post has been wiped clean of this board. Was I wrong for showing how asking for credit pay work in another field, seems so wrong. This business seems like the only work where a lot of people seem to think that working for free is the best way to get ahead. How long can you survive giving your work away for free and pay for a place to live and pay for the equipment th…

I'm getting sick of these producers, shopping. If price is the ONLY consideration, then I'm never going to win that one. I've spent a lifetime building my gear, learning my craft, working on a resume, building demos, and building relationships in this industry, only to have it all thrown out the window when someone doesn't even take the time to look at my resume (or webpage) and goes for one thing.. Correct me if I'm wrong but in the real world when you see a job offer in the classified pages, you apply, you get asked for an interview, they spend some time getting to know you to see if your "the right fit", and then.. and only then do they offer you the position and …

Well I had a particularly difficult week this week. As with every week, having to deal with the usually newbie producers that seam to be insulted that "I" am charging money to work on a set, from the wife who thinks the 'sound biz' is just a hobby ('when do you get a real job'), to getting my ass handed to me on a job interview at the end of this week.. Caulk it all up to some of life's experiences I guess.. But one particular incident seams to keep nagging at me... I got a gig working on a low budget 2 camera red shoot in Pasadena. Everything was set, cleared my schedule, call sheets out, equipment was set, boom op chosen, it was all a go. I was looking forward…

People have asked about whether it's still useful to get recordings of room tone, background voices, ambient sound, etc. on set. The answer is generally a big YES. The people who find the room tone most useful in post production, by the way, are not the sound effects editors. It's the dialog editors. In trying to smooth out transitions from take to take they need to fade in and fade out the various diverse and ever changing pieces of ambient noise that you guys and gals valiantly try to minimize in your on-set recordings. The bigger the pieces of each of those kinds of "noise" they have to work with, the better. Chances are that if you can get the crew to be "still"…

I recently had a sanken cos-11 come up missing, while day playing on a TV show (NBC ). The production company doesn't seem to want to reimburse me for it. How long does it useally take to get reimbursed from a prod. company? Do I need to seek legal action or do I just eat it ? Thanks in advance, KKS.

Working on a guerrilla film on Sunday, down at Muscle Beach Venice. I got there early, found a place to park even, met the film makers/actors/producer at the location. While I was there, I observered.. no less then 20 homeless people, one passed out drunk laying on the concrete (he looked like he died during the night and the flies were all over him), 2 guys walking around only wearing speedos (pretty much showing everything because they were shredded), 4 people that asked me if I need "medical marijuana", 1 guy huffing paint in plain sight, 4 people drinking beer in plain sight, 10 panhandlers, 1 pick pocket and at least 20 tourist video taping and taking photos. …

Just thought you guys might like this one.. Baz Luhrmann is doing a whole bunch of "behind the scenes" takes from his upcoming Australia movie. Todays clip was "sound". It's really nicely done and has interviews with the sound designer, sound mixer, and even the boom op.. 1) You can head over to the iTunes Podcast at: http://www.apple.com/education/settoscreen/ or 2) Get the movie directly from my server here: http://www.deepmagicstudios.com/videos/Baz_Luhrmann-Sound_Design.mov (be sure to right click on that, because I doubt if it plays on your browser. Once saved, rename .mov to m4v) -Richard

Peoples - New Legal query.... If the project is non-union, I usually opt to invoice as a corporation and stay off timecards and away from Payroll Svcs.. I've got a booking next week - and the company is telling me I have to go through their payroll service as it is required unless I have my own worker's comp insurance.... I do not. (I once did when I had a larger staff, but it is rather expensive and difficult to deal with for a small business) I offered to provide a document to them to indemnify them from any possible worker's comp liability (from me) - and now I have to find one / make one!! 30yrs and going, I've never made an insurance claim, eithe…

Welcome to Lev whom John Coffey seems to think is our first director here on my Discussion Group. I looked Lev up on IMDB and interestingly enough he is credited with doing the sound on a movie that I was credited as having done --- "Ski School"in 1991. Well, I did NOT do that movie but it took me some time to get my credit, which was in error, taken off IMDB. For some totally unexplained reason my name showed up on both "Ski School" and "Ski Patrol" and I had nothing to do with either! In any case, welcome aboard! Regards, Jeff Wexler
