  2. No argument there. Production put us in possibly the worst hotel I've stayed in and alas I had no choice. Luckily it was only one night. We the crew demanded production find us somewhere better.
  3. How good are the silent chargers. Had an away job the other week where my charger was inches from my pillow. Not a sound.
  4. I made the swap to Hi-Q batteries almost a year ago and haven't looked back. My ol' trusty Np1's have now been relegated to poweringing my cart monitors and other non essentials.
  5. The audio quality is not the main thing that concerns or excites me about the new 4080 gooseneck. I already have two 4098's and I think they are great mics that have far exceeded my expectations. For me the desire to add some 4080 gooseneck's is do to the smaller tube and what looks like a more mouldable gooseneck. The more flexibility for mounting the better. That and with car stuff I find you often need more then one plant mic per character, especially if you have some in the back and front seat. Even with sim travel multi cam shoots will find a why to bone us and we need to be quickly adaptable.

I rarely just boom these days but when I did I thought of it as a part of my duties to inform the mixer of any coverage changes, changes in performance (whisper last take, yell next take) and line changes. I would often also let the continuity person/script supervisor know of these. A lot of things get whispered into ears of actors and cam ops that don't get relayed to the rest of the crew. As a boomie you are in the middle of it all, quietly listening in.
  7. Sorry to hear that. It's hard when we are using gear that isn't really designed for the rigorous elements we work in. For me it's been a tough 4 days of night shoots based around cars with tight turn arounds. No blocking, shoot the rehearsal, everything done in a rush, all the fun stuff. My 4098's saved my arse. They were rough handled, bent into all kind of shapes to remain hidden but are still in tact. Honestly I'd hate see what the grill looks like once i take the foamy off. I had intended to do this job with planted booms in the car but it became quickly apparent that was not an option.
  8. Seeing as how drastically less I am being asked to do a two channel mix to camera as compared to sending a mono GT to cam, Zaxnet TX would be by far the logical choice for me. Maybe if it was an option to install either a UHF or Zaxnet TX. Been using my Nomad all week (I really should use it more often) and being able to quickly route and reroute Zaxnet signal through the Nomads internal Bus has been a godsend.

  10. I'll second everything Palmer just said. I use a mix of Lectro and Zax NC and for those unpredictable characters I prefer to go Zax. If it's going to be one of those whispers to yells situations I tend to set the gain a bit lower on the TX then is ideal and consider it as a safety measure ISO. All this you already know. Sorry my dog is a Greyhound and they rarely bark so I can't test that.

  12. I'm on an older firmware version 1-59 and it has PowerRoll. My ZMT3 Phantom doesn't have PowerRoll however. Maybe I'll hold off on doing firmware updates.
  13. I believe it's a new digital TV tower down the south coast that was causing the issue. For me 25 and 26 were totally blocked out. I was able to find a few useable frequencies on 24. Didn't use a cam link on that job so I can't say what 22 was like. In Port Kembla I've had issues on 22 but have always been able to find 1 useable frequency. Thankfully that's all I need. 26 was good. Didn't check the others. The shipping yards make life hard there.
  14. I must admit I haven't kept up to date with whats actually changed, sold off and reused. I have upper-wideband for talent TX. Generally I stick with 26. Wireless boom on 25, IFB is on 24 and Camera links on 22. Never had any real issues in any of these blocks all over Sydney. May just be lucky. Down by Wollongong and Stanwell Park have been a different story.

  18. Thanks Ramallo, the ambient is a good option. I already own the QWB and UMP2 although they haven't been used for years. Alas I don't have the qwb-re. My idea was to have a cover that just went over TX, for ease of use, quick deployment and so the pole can fully collapse. That couple of extra inches can be a nuisance wheeling the cart with a pole on it under KD's (Wet weather/shade tents generally used here.) That and I kind of enjoy designing, sewing, realising I've made mistakes and trying again. Trying to create something that works best for me, not interested in lending my hand to manufacturing. If I can't make it work I'll be ordering the ambient qwb-re. Cheers Nate.
  19. In anticipation of a ZMT phantom arriving in my grubby mits this week, I'm creating a relatively simple sleeve to protect the ZMT PH from the elements. I'm very much at the design stage, which means last night I woke up half a dozen times with what ifs and brilliant plans. Tac'd up a mock up today and the concept should work. Concept is a sleeve made from kite material (100% water proof), each opening sealed with velcro. Seam sealer on all stitching. Toying with putting a mesh pocket inside to hold a small desiccant bag and adding one or two elastic straps with toggles to tighten the whole sleeve up to avoid any rustling from the material in wind. I don't intend to put a window in to see the screen of the ZMT for a couple of reasons. It's a total PITA to sew on my domestic sewing machine, adds more risk to the elements getting in and once the ZMT PH is set up I really don't need to see the screen, all the important info I can see from my QRX. My main concerns are: The material can be noisy. Think cheap rain jackets. Tension should help that. The velcro openings/seals are never going to be totally water proof but a bit of tape can help alleviate that. I would love to see photos of how people already using the ZMT PH have them mounted. More specifically how your cables are routed as this is the biggest danger zone in regards to water. Also which way do you have the antenna facing. The four Sound Guys Solutions mounts i brought have the antennas facing up toward the mic. Easily changed. Any suggestions are appreciated and hopefully I'll have one sewn up next week.
  20. Used the new clips for the first time today. A lot of micing numerous construction workers. Made hard hat rigs easy and micing burly men who are somewhat touch sensitive, well less, sensitive.
  21. Tom if you're not already a part of the Australian Sound Recordists and Boom Ops FB page, join up. They also have a sales group. There's often second hand gear on there at great to fair prices. If I was in your boat I'd probably go Maxx or 633, Second hand Lectro's and the best boom mic you can afford. I'd also get a good boom pole, instead of cheating out, as it is one of the most important bits of gear and you'll be using it for many years to come. Best of luck once you have finished uni.   25. Currently I use a curly cable externally for run and gun work using mono mics. I wrap this around the pole as I would with a straight cable. The cable I use was designed to be used internally on an ambient pole but hey, rules were made to be broken. This is the best option I have found that works for me at the moment.
