  1. New Zealand Post now offer this service for kiwis wanting to get goods from the USA, IIRC the goods have to be under $NZD5000 (not sure about the gst component). Just thought I'd point it out.. Grant.
  2. I'm often blown away that a cam op will spend ages setting up a shot then just throw a mic on talent in a funky manner in corporate vids.. Often I've straightened ties, fixed collars, pointed out missed buttons on shirts. I suppose it's a case of not seeing the wood for the trees. Grant.
  3. Often it's a case of "here's your budget for corporate communications this year, don't ask as there is no more". Grant.
  4. From memory it's actually gain stages and not attenuation, like a neve console.. (I'm sure it says somewhere in the manual) Like cmassey, the 552 doesn't sound anywhere as good to my ears. I've been using one recently and really miss my SQN.. Grant.
  5. Crikey dude, I'll spell it out for you seeing as you don't get it. Knowing how to act in a professional capacity on a film set as the HOD of sound is what I was referring to. Or, how not to make a dick of yourself in front of the more experienced crew members, thereby "losing face" and more importantly, respect. Grant.
  6. Ever watched a "behind the scenes" from a nature series and notice the lack of production sound recordists, or even in the credits? Now you know why.. A large proportion is foley or synched in later, seriously! The reason you don't notice is because usually, it's done well. Grant.
  7. I never said anything about your ability to twiddle faders, I said "your inexperience on set". Well, you did state you'd only done a few jobs.. Grant.
  8. Sounds like you have contracts signed for future work? Just be careful that your inexperience on set doesn't get you fired and you're left with a huge debt to service, seen it many times before.. Best of luck, seriously! Regards, Grant.
  9. Lectro make one so do rycote Regards Grant.
  10. The neumann range all have digital limiting done in the mic, not sure on specifics. Regarding the super cmit 2U, from the schoeps website "Since firmware version 2.0 the SuperCMIT is equipped with a limiter (when gain boost is active) to prevent overload caused by very loud signals." And in the Firmware history pdf: "Firmware history: 2.0 (September 2011): Limiter on active gain boost, improved high-pass filter as well as beam former optimization to reduce artifacts 1.33 (September 2010): Ability to raise output levels by 30 dB with a combination of button presses 1.29 (June 2010): First released version of the firmware If you wish to have your SuperCMIT updated, we ask you to send it to your dealer / distributor. As a special service, for any major firmware revision (i.e. if the first digit of the version number changes), SCHOEPS offers you a free update. You assume only the shipping costs." hope that helps.. Regards, Grant. Found this interesting. "A new approach to high directivity and sound quality The SuperCMIT 2 U microphone uses exclusive technology from ILLUSONIC (patent pending). In addition to the capsule behind the interference tube, it contains a second, rear-facing microphone capsule. Digital signal processing (DSP) can analyze both signals and thereby distinguish discrete versus diffuse sound energy. The two signals are then combined in a time- and frequency-dependent manner such that the directional effect for discrete sound energy is increased while the level of diffuse sound is reduced. At high frequencies (above 6 kHz) only the signal from the front-facing capsule is used, since the interference tube already offers optimal effectiveness in that range."
  11. Check out the countryman EMW & B6 range of lav mics, both are ok in water. regards, Grant.
  12. I use these from neutrik. http://www.neutrik.com/en/xlr/x-hd-series/nc3fx-hd-b They've worked for me, so far.. Grant.
  13. The idea is that the waist belt takes the weight and the harness keeps it steady. I've been using the set (belt/harness) for the last 15ish years and can't do without it. Grant.
  14. If you're still wanting sounds try posting at: naturerecordists@yahoogroups.com There's several ex-BBC recordists that'll be able to help you out there. Just be respectful and don't expect something for nothing, after all, we all go on about producers trying to lowball here all the time.. self promo time. I live in New Zealand and do a lot of nature recording , so if anyone ever needs something from this part of the world.. http://naturesounds.co.nz https://soundcloud.com/naturesounds_nz Regards, Grant.
  15. It's not a long shotgun at all but check out the sanken cs-1, a very tight pattern and is small and light. I use it for 90% of my work indoors and out. Just to throw a spanner in the works.. Grant.
  16. I use those, very handy. Grant.
  17. I met Wing in 2004 when we followed her recording her latest CD for a day, she had an appearance in Australia a few days later and on the way back brought the crew a box of chocolates back each. For all her faults, she's one nice lady..
  18. Comedian John Clark is also known in this part of the world for this masterpiece:
  19. That's what us kiwis sound like when we say "sound speed"! Was working with some guys from north america recently that thought "sweet as" ( a common saying here meaning "it's all good" ) was "sweet ass".. Grant.
  20. Just a note about the "key test", it does exist in the doc world and is called "talent gets xyz out of supermarket bag with no warning". Had it several times over the last few days and sounded, well, ok with lectro um400a tx. Thought I'd mention it. Grant.
  21. I often do that too, am happier with the sound then lavs on the visor. Grant.
  22. I keep my boom in a (forgotten name) rod holder, over the years I've had several people look at the case and say "nice rods those, how do you find it ?". Funny thing is I've only ever caught one fish in my life and that was undersize (but at work!). Grant.
  23. Being an old JD fan I have that movie, it's quiet in the sense that there's not a lot going on audio wise. Check it out if you want to see & hear a film with a different take on a mix, I like it a lot. ( BTW: it's Anton Corbijns' first feature film, get the directors suite version with all the extras) It's been a while since I watched it but I'm sure in the extras they mention that all the "gigs" were recorded live. Grant.
  24. SLJ Wow, that's one great performance! Paul Kelly write some great songs, seen him several times live and loved his shows. Grant.
