  1. We're not immune from unrealistic low/no budget requests here in New Zealand. Here's an interesting one. ...I plan to shoot the film in November of this year (2012). Most of the film will be shot in Auckland, including K-Rd (the red light district of the city). I will shoot the rest of the film up North at Omamari, Maunganui and Mohoa (small Maori communities just past Dargaville). I plan to adopt a unique approach to shooting the film. It will be shot on a full HD Canon 7D. This camera has a excellent depth of field and is really good in low lighting. I will be using a tripod for most of the shots, as I prefer that style, rather than the freestyle method which is becoming more common nowadays. Although, the POV shots will be done free style of course. I will be using natural lighting as much as possible, to give the film the gritty realism I am seeking. I will have a skeleton crew, except for the green screen symbolic/artistic scenes, which will require a bigger crew on board for those scenes. For the sound, we will use a boom mike, with a special connection directly into the camera (so we do not have to edit the sound seperately). Like all my other films, I will be making the film on a mini-micro budget. So I am looking for film crew prepared to work on the feature film for a deferred payment, for a three week shoot, between 3 - 24 November (2012), which means you will have a share in the profits from the sales of the film (DVD's, view online via Pal etc.) once it is made. Expenses will be paid for of course. So it will most probably suit film makers who have completed film school and want to add a feature film to their resume and desire to have the experience of creating a feature film. You will need to live in Auckland. I am looking for the following crew: 1) Production Assistant. Your role will be to assist in all areas of production as and when needed. You would maintaining the continuity logs, assisting the production manager and the 1st AD on sets as well as assisting the 1st AD with the shot breakdown and shooting scehdule. 2) Runner. Your role will be to run around doing whatever needs to be undertaken i.e. Picking up the food etc. You will need a car (Petrol and wear and tear will be paid for on the spot). 3) Boom Operator. You will need to have experience in this area. Plus, preferably your own gear, although if you do not this is ok. 4) 2nd AD: Assisting 1st AD & working with production assistant on sets. As this will be a skeleton crew, we will all be be working very closely together during the shoot so I am looking for crew who are PASSIONATE about the film and who I am able to get along with. I can be a extremely intense Director, so need crew who can gel with the intensity of my personality and character. We will hold 'briefs' before each days shoot, so everyone has the opportunity to voice their nga whakaaro (thoughts) regrading any matter/issues relating to the film. This is so everyone feels involved and is valued. However, once shooting begins, I will expect my role as Director to be respected in making any and all final decisions relating to the film and how it is shot. Regards, Grant.
  2. I'm surprised that you didn't park one or two of the cars around the genny as well.
  3. Looks like the lino is a reworked SD.. I have the Nagra SD and it sounds great, I imagine these will have the same "sound"?
  4. Great tool and just bought one! tip: you can use the keyboard to name rather then number your scene. Grant.
  5. Reread the original question, the TA is proposing to set his limiter at -18dBFS. That has nothing to do with complexity of the recorder he's using. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and say something got lost in translation or it's a typo, he's based in Italy and I'll (oh no, not that word!) assume english is not his native tongue. Mind you, I struggle with basic spelling/grammer at times.. Grant.
  6. Yep, know them both well! Chris and I have worked together a lot over the last year, top bloke. That reminds me, I need to return his call.. Grant.
  7. That's what I do as I don't have a wireless hop, if requested in the initial call I'll just say "no problem" and send a few txts to organise one. Mind you, when I mention that its an extra cost often it doesn't seem to be so important.. Grant.
  8. At the risk of stating the obvious, use the internet to find out immigration details for each country you are interested in, don't rely on hearsay. I took me less then 1 minute to find all of the following via google... Good luck! New Zealand http://www.immigration.govt.nz/ Canada http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/ USA http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis Australia http://www.immi.gov.au/ I used to work on a "ethinic minority" show, heard many stories of people not following simple guidelines posted on our immigration site and being refused initially. Remember, an immigration lawyer/adviser CANNOT guarantee acceptence, only help you fill out paperwork, It's up to the officials to decide your fate. Don't get me started on the amount of people I met spending 10's of 000's because a dodgy immigration adviser claimed using them would GUARANTEE residency. Regards, Grant. update: not saying don't use an "expert". Just, be aware..
  9. There's a photo of me at work in the latest addition, apparently.. Grant.
  10. A regular (corporate shoots) client once remarked that he appreciated me turning up looking neat and tidy. Turned out my replacement one day wore beach shorts and jandels (aka flipflops) to a shoot with a bank CEO. (wtf?) I'm usually overdressed (but practical) as I like nice clothes.. Like Ian I always have a backpack with a rain jacket and weather depending, spare warm top/cool shirt. Needed it today as what was listed as a studio shoot changed to EXT on a very windy/cold hill and I was the only crew member prepared. Grant.
  11. I have the same kit, took a long hard look at the alternatives when my "full size" SQN4s needed replacing. Concluded that the mini was capable of doing 99% of my work, not to mention the 4 ch prefader output if needed.. Grant.
  12. Here in New Zealand I've met several "former student sound guys" that did the above then ditched the equipment cheap on our version of ebay after a year of no work. Too some, 10-15k for a start up package is a cheap investment considering the possible returns.. I also know several students in debt for 40k+ that never worked in their field of study, never really understood that one. Grant.
  13. Ironic that this thread is currently the first on google.. Regards, Grant.
  14. I've got the original leatherman also! Bit scary that I brought it around 25 years ago too, these days it's my "around home" multitool. For work I bought a victorinox around 10 years ago and it's still looking like I got it yesterday. Happy with both brands and would recommend either to a first time purchaser. Grant.
  15. I just got home from a DSLR job where the client provided the SD card, was setting up when the producer came over and handed it to me! Maybe its a case of educating them that providing a card will save on O.T? Grant.
  16. RH I'd love to agree with you but Unfortunately most people just don't give a hoot about sound. We are just a PIA on shoots and nerds to the rest of the world.. Doesn't stop me trying my best though. Grant (null)
  17. JD, No disrespect intended in my earlier post. I listened to a lot of DG recordings In my late teens and was always impressed with the quality of the audio. No doubt You had a hand in some of them! Grant. (null)
  18. You can reverse the mic when used in the 'turtle mount' to help reduce wind noise when used under clothing. The HF bump will help recover some of the top end lost through clothing too. Grant. (null)
  19. I'm very surprised that several posters here have no idea that the majority (ok, a lot) of classical music is recorded using just 2x omni mics. (or a Decca tree, 3x omnis in a triangle) Grant. (null)
  20. Here's what I get up to. http://naturesounds.co.nz http://soundcloud.com/naturesounds_nz Grant.
  21. I lived in Kerikeri (bay of Islands) for a while to escape, travelled back to Auckland for work (a 2.5-3hr journey) for 2+ day shoots for about a year. Due to family issues I moved back, thinking of the next place now the kids are almost grown up.. Heck, I may even go back! http://www.kerikeri.co.nz/ Grant.
  22. Crikey, do you guys actually get paid on 48hr film comps? Here in New Zealand no one gets paid, it's for the glory! (null)
  23. I often do the 48hr comps, I'm the only "pro" on the crew but it's a lot of fun. The cam op is the local broadcast rentals shop manager and a very talented muso as well, check out this one! My son was the boom op on this, first time for him. (he's second in on the couch holding back a smile and I'm pointing out the boot in the final rap) https://vimeo.com/25164797 Grant.
  24. Thanks Jay, thats what I meant to add. Grant
