-20 light keeps flashing on my Smqv when sending at mic level
Johnny Karlsson replied to Ruvis's topic in General Discussion
It seems that you have "intermittent" tone engaged. This is a feature for testing and troubleshooting. On the 302 and 442 (I have not used the Mixpre) the battery button toggles this function on and off. -
Thanks!

My suggestion would be a 416.

Haha, yeah, I would set it down on a table or cart. So far, I have run up to six wireless plus boom with the 664.

I'm thinking a modular bag would be great. One where you could zipper / strap / Velcro sections on and off. If you need to run 12 wireless one day, but the next day is run and gun for 12 hours wiith two wires and a boom - would be nice to lose as much weight as possible for that and not have a half empty bag flopping about. A CL-6 removable section would be great as well... Or like on some suitcases, where you have a zipper that goes around and when opened, the bag "accordions" out for a little extra space. Different sections could be sold as add-ons...?

Slate Digital: The Virtual Microphone System
Johnny Karlsson replied to VASI's topic in The Daily Journal
If I'm reading this right, it looks like the system comes with two condenser mics (one large and one small diaphragm), so it's not really claiming to make an SM58 into a U87. I still agree with Marc in that I'm not convinced that this will work. That said I own and use Steven Slate's Drums and Virtual Console, which are both very good. -
I use two systems from Remote Audio - one is v.2 and the other is v.4. I have not experienced any noise issues whatsoever.

Ultrasone headphones for location work. Which ones?
Johnny Karlsson replied to Christian Spaeth's topic in Equipment
I ordered the PRO 750 recently, and my experience was: Terrible. So much so that I was wondering if they were knockoffs. - Sound: seriously hyped. Not flat by any means. - Fit: uncomfortable. - Came with 2 cables; one straight with 1/8" connector (not threaded!!!?!?) one coiled with fixed 1/4". Odd to say the least. The printed instructions mentioned that the cables were both terminated to 1/8" connectors and that there was supposed to be a 1/4" adapter included that was "not to be alienated". Hmm. Furthermore, these cables were stiff, cheap feeling and caused serious microphonic noise in the phones. - Tried calling the Ultrasone numbers on their website to confirm if these were the real thing, but got voicemail every time. Left a message and kept calling every hour for two days - still have not heard back from them. In conclusion, I returned them and will never look back. Just my 2 cents. -
Sound Devices bulletin re approved CF cards
Johnny Karlsson replied to Johnny Karlsson's topic in Equipment
Update 2: I had a quick phone chat with Casey at SD this morning, who told me that the 32 GB cards sent out by Delkin use the same controller as the originally approved 16 GB cards. These cards have during SDs testing so far showed no problems, and they can be used with confidence. -

Sound Devices bulletin re approved CF cards
Johnny Karlsson replied to Johnny Karlsson's topic in Equipment
Update: Just received a 32 GB UDMA 6 CF700X to replace my 16GB (KZ in serial). So just like Mark S says above, I guess it's nice to see an upgrade in size, but I'm not feeling confident about bringing this card on a job, since it's not on Sound Devices' approved list. Seems odd that Delkin would do it this way, rather than pick one of the approved list. SD mentions that they have been in close talks with Delkin about this. (I even included the link to the approved media page on SDs website in the first email to Delkin). -

Dave, what type of Kit are you looking for? Full cart setup or two-wireless-and-boom-straight-to-camera bag? Or something in between? -

Low Profile TA3 to XLR Cable assembly for SD 788
Johnny Karlsson replied to Eric Toline's topic in Do It Yourself
Nice work, Eric! Been pondering making some right angle TA-3s myself. Looks like you used the Ranes, but what are those caps? Glue to keep everything in place? -
Al, I've been running it on a 2010 MBP since it was released and the only issue I've noticed is that "Open Link Behind Mail" is not working, but I now use option-command-click instead. Something I learned because of this "issue".

Sound Devices bulletin re approved CF cards

Same here. Delkin has been very responsive to emails. Sent one card in and am waiting for the replacement. Since they have been communicating with SD about this, one would hope that the replacement cards will be free of the problem. -

While I understand, bralleput, your intention is to say 'don't be mean to newbies and try to help, just as all of us once needed help to get started'. However, RTFM is very good advice, not mean at all in any way, (the F stands Fantastic). In the case of SDs manuals, they are not written by Chinese 8-year-olds (no offense to Chinese 8-year-olds) and not difficult to read at all. I would not point to a single page, but rather advice to read the whole thing from page one all the way through. Personally, I have a hard time believing that the OP is for real. Why would anyone drop $5K on a piece of gear that they don't know how to use in the most basic way? Maybe it's just me, but if someone handed me gear to use on a job tomorrow and I'm not 100% familiar with said gear, I would spend the rest of the day (and evening if necessary) setting up, playing with it and reading the crap out of the manual, go thru all menus, familiarize myself with all specs and settings, just to have peace of mind, and be able to focus on the job in the morning. If they handed me a Red Epic and asked me to operate it, I would politely turn down the job, or refer someone else who can handle it properly. -
I used to use the thing Olle is talking about, but the ball is too easily jumping out of the holder. I now have a 'nite ize grip n clip d-cell' holder on each of my poles. It clips onto any d-ring or the harness ring securely.

FWIW, I went from a 4 to a 5 (no S's). Way better battery life. But of course, as with everything else, it depends. For example, if you find yourself in a location with bad reception, the phone tries to constantly find a signal, and the battery could be drained before the end of the day (solution - keep a charger cable in your kit). Using navigation seems to take a lot of power also (solution - keep the phone plugged in at all times while driving).

Zack - haha, love it. Crussell - awesome, did you see the sound guy in the video a little down that page: http://youtu.be/BHu2lQ5jUVA
